As a singer, I have 2 songs to audition for my voice, Summertime and I Put A Spell on You - they both show range and control when you stretch those notes. I try to let go and show what I can do, and it's not like I don't practice, and - somedays it works and some days, I'm way off. But it's a terrific song to listen to the pure sound of a vocalist. Just listen to Steve Perry in his earliest recording - singing Summertime, for example. Then Janis Joplin. That cannot be taught. I LOVE how The Rhythm Kings did this, and Beverly Skeete's interpretation; -- I love love love love her intuitive handling of this song.

I didn't think that it was possible to do this as well as Nina Simone, but this is definitely up there with her. However, when Nina did this in the 60s, there wasn't the technology about. She had an extraordinary saxophonist, but Bill Wyman has Albert Lee. Spoiled for choice.

Great voice but she loses the plot when she says 'you and you and you'. The song is supposed to be about one particular person. It was hard enough to take when she acknowledged the audience when pronouncing 'you' the first time. As a songwriter I insist that it's not the thing to do. It's gimmiky and all but cheap. Only that great voice saves it.

Yes, it was! Georgie being a star in his own right and a central white bluesman of the 60s and 70s modestly and humbly playing keyboards like a true team player here -- and I felt sure he would shortly launch into a similar virtuosic interlude as can be heard on Alan Price's version.....sadly that was noticeably absent, but this Simone-esque rendering is still whole and complete in its own right and justice was done.....(must look out for more Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings stuff -- the idea of which reminds me of the Wilburys.....)
