  • The Independent State of Croatia (NDH) was Croatia during the Second World War. What happened in Croatia during WW2? And how did Croatia join the Axis? The Independent State of Croatia (NDH) was established when the German invasion of Yugoslavia was still going on. Led by the Ustaša organization under the leadership of Ante Pavelić. The Ustashas committed many crimes against Serbian and Jewish people.

It is important to notice that when king Alexander imposed his dictatorship on the orthodox Christmas eve in 1929, thus changing the name of the state from "The kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes" to "The kingdom of Yugoslavia", not only were the Croats revolted, as stated in the video, but so was every ethnic group (even the Serbs) ! This is because the king wanted do create an integral Yugoslav ethnicity by suppressing any other ethnicity, be it Serb, Croat or Slovene. That's why no one was happy with that causing political instability culminating in the quick surrender to the Axis powers in 1941.

Interesting how the "Independent State of Croatia" included lands that were non-Croat but excluded lands that were Croat majority like Dalmatia, Medjugorje, non-coastal Istra, etc. By this and eliminating ethnic Croats opposed to the regime, one could argue that Ante Pavelic was a traitor to his own people.

Ante Pavelic was present in serb parliament when Stjepan Radic was killed in 1928. In 1929 Ante Pavelic was sentenced to death in absentio by King Alexander, had to flee the country, and found refuge with Italians. So Serbs killed a moderate croatian politician, and pushed a more radical politician in the hands of Italian fascists, who were interested in every way possible to destabilize slav countries, so they could expand their influence there. In hindsight, neither of those were smart moves.

I would like to add that first killings didn't occur in May of 1941. There were some minor incidents during early arrests of Serbs, Communists and Jews before that with some deaths. However, first real massacre was at Gudovac near Bjelovar on 28th of April, not even three weeks after Slavko Kvaternik declared NDH. After some local Ustasha militiamen were shot at by remnants of the Yugoslav Army, Martin Čikoš and armed Ustasha that were previously in Peasant Guard (some kind of territorial units in former Yugoslavia) arrested and executed 196 Serbs. Eugen Kvaternik never gave order to hide this and corpses were left in the field which caused German authorities to arrest local Ustasha. Of course, Ustashe told Germans that massacre was reprisal for some Serb massacre of Croats (which never occurred) and Germans let Ustasha free. Father of Eugene Kvaternik, the one person who proclaimed NDH and was for a time commander of regular NDH army was fierce opponent of Ustasha massacres, as was German military attaché Glaise Horstenou. Both left first hand sources on those atrocities which doesn't sit well with modern Croatian right wing narrative that those atrocities never happened and were invented by Communists.

Croatians in Austro-Hungary were in the 2 Provinces trying to unite with no success: Croatia and Dalmatia.
Croatia was in the Hungarian half of A-H, Dalmatia was in the Austrian half of A-H, each having it's own Parliament.
Croat politicians of Croatian Parliament over the referring Budapest Parliament urged in the capital Wiena at the Emperor K&K to be unified with the Dalmatia.
That was discussed, some appreciated, but nothing was implemented.
Croats of Dalmatia Parliament wanted to join Serbia in joint Kingdom,to prevent implementing of the London Agreement of 1915, by which Italy entered the Great War.
Croats of the Croatian Parliament were against that state, but accepted only influenced by the Dalmatian politicians.
All Croats regarded the K SCS as temporary state to be exited from.
In 1928 they formed unofficial request for leaving the state, on unpolite way, on which 3 Croat CPP politicians were assassinated.
Afterwards they struggled by 3 Parties to gain independence: 1 CPP Croat Peasant Party, 2 CRP Croatian Rights Party, later becoming the UCRO Ustashe, 3 CPY Communist Party of Yugoslavia, Communist Party of Croatia subdivisional since 1937 after Tito becoming in charge.

You forget something: Istria, Dalmatia and ex Republica Ragusa ( today Dubrovnik ) were part of Austrian Empire, and also ex Venice Albania or today Boka Kotorska; Croatia and Slavonia were part of Hungarian Kingdom with Fiume ( today Rijeka or Rika ) pocket, specially controled from Budapest or Hungary. In that time, Austro-Hungaria was double state connected with Habsburg house or in personal union. Mostly, historians think that was just one state, but in reality were two. So, between 1867 to 1918, Croats lived in two states. And, if you count that Bosnia was a part of Turkish Empire, between 1463 to 1908, Croats lived in 3 states or Empires.

What Serbs forget (on purpose) is that in general regular people prior to ww2 didn't know who Ustashe were. They were on the political margins (just as communists) before ww2. The most democratically popular party was the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) with Macek who refused to cooperate with Nazis.
My greatgrandfather was a HSS polititian in a place next to Zagreb, and he told us that people were stopping him in the street to ask "who were the Ustashe?" once they took power with the help of Italians in 1941. They simply had no idea who these new rulers were. It's not like the average person could do a google search. However, they were satisfied to have an independant Croatia free from the Serbian barbaric savages from the east.
To the OP of the video, I would suggest you remove "Croatia ❤️ Hitler" in the video, as many Croatians were also members of the partisan movement. Tito himself was a Croat. Also, modern day Croatia has nothing to do with "Independant State of Croatia" as your clickbait would perhaps suggest.

Stefan, we learn in primmary and high school that Croatia actually never elect Ustaše or KPH (Communist Party of Croatia). Both sides did political repression, massacres, war crimes, purges, and opposition boycott. Promotion of one-party system by KPH (KPJ) wasn't exactly democraric election.
However we recognize antifa movement (ZAVNOH) and partisans as only real Croatian representative deffence (and military) force against occupators in WW2, since Royalist (Chetniks) deffend only Serbs, kill all non-Serbs to make Greater Serbia by plan of Stevan Moljević in 1941., collabirate with Communists (Užice Republika) Germans and Italian fascists to succeed in their plan.
We learn that only legit goverment was HSS and Banate of Croatia which was against nazis, comunists and/or royalists (chetniks) but they refuse to join Central Powers and couldn't organize their army and volunters (Hrvatska građanska zaštita i Hrvatska seljačka zaštita) against them since occupation.
But that doesn't mean HSS members, army and volunteers didn't join either Croatian Communist Partisans (they didn't join political party but choose to join army and volunteers in minor numbers), lead by so-called Federal State of Croatia, and/or Croatian Home Guard, lead by so-called Independence State of Croatia (they didn't join political party but choose to join army or volunteers in major nubers).
Vlatko Maček, former leader of Banate of Croatia was for Western Allies but was forced to choose between KPH and UHRO which goverment and it's army need to be recignized by HSS (and Banate of Croatia). He (Maček, leader of HSS), refuse offers of Central Powers offer and Pavelić was ellected. As punishment for refusing he was sentence 6 months in Jasenovac and later join He (inclunding most of HSS) didn't like communists either since he was strong democrat. Later, in June 1944 on Vis member of HSS and as representative diplomat of occupied Banate of Croatia and Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Ivan Šubašić sign "Sporazum Tito-Šubašić" on Vis.

Since Croatia separated without agreement from the local Serbs who used to live there and since they were expelled from all public job positions by their new 90s leader Franjo Tuđman (who publicly say that everyone should be proud to be called Ustaše), Serbs had 100% right to separate and join Serbia if they wish. Plain and simple, they broke the contract which was made prior to the WW2 ended and thanks to which they even had Croatia as a territorial state. If Serbian partisans on that meeting did not supported this Tito dictate, Croatia in today borders would not be existing at all after WW2.

@@rogyn8484 The 1974 constitution gave constituent republics the right to independence. The Serbs were a privileged minority at just 12% of the population, and they did not need to be consulted, Serbia had its own republic and Croatia had the right to have its republic, with its historical borders. The Serbs were offered forms of autonomy within Croatia on several occasions, they refused and instead started a war to carve up 1/3 of Croatia (even in areas where Serbs were not a majority or a significant minority) to steal Croatian territory so it could be absorbed by Serbia proper.
The federal borders of Croatia were recognised by representatives of all of the Yugoslav republics in 1945, and were recognised as international borders, uti possidentis juris, by the Badinter commission and by the international community.
Serbs had all of their rights (equality with Croats and other minorities, national seats in the Croatian parliament etc) already guaranteed by the constitution.
It was the RSK that (attempted) to violently secede from the federal and constitutional borders of Croatia first, which was being supported by Serbia in order to create an enlarged Serbian state. Only several months of being in the middle of a Serb rebellion did Croatia opt for full independence, and after years of Milošević and other Serb nationalists violating the constitution, promoting nationalist violence, revoking Kosovo and Vojvodina's autonomy to rig votes in support of Serbia and so on.
Tuđman was an ex-Partisan, he was hardly an Ustaše. Sure, he said some nationalistic things, but his nationalism was a reaction to the violent nationalism that had started with Milošević et al and his nationalist cronies in Croatia and Bosnia that wanted to create separatist states to annex them to Serbia.

    • @rogyn8484
      @rogyn8484 Před 11 měsíci +1

@@thejosh3855 Serbs were offered forms of autonomy within Croatia only when the conflict culminated later in the war and not before this (in my opinion Z4 plan was a fair offer afterwards but Milošević and Tuđamn had their own deals under the table regarding Bosnia). Until conflict started Serbs were kicked out of the public sector jobs, forced to agree on the newly independent state of Croatia despite their own disagreements with that and Croatian political leaders who were back then clearly pro-Ustashe oriented, together with their NDH symbolism waving NDH flags and many of the local Croat political leaders publicly glorifying Pavelić. Tuđman multiple times during the war mentioned Ustashe in a positive light promoting that ideology even in the secret recordings he endorsed ethnic cleaning and harassment of the Serbs. Croatia is recognized as a Federal state and that is true but it was the AVNOJ conference and agreement on it that enabled Croatia to be recognized in the first place, if there was no agreement by the Serbian representatives at the conference who were promised equal rights and equal share in decision making Croatia would not even be created in a shape that is visible today. Saying that Serbs were a privileged minority at just 12% is really shame on your side, after what had happened in WW2 Serbian population perished and was reduced for at least 25% in the most gruesome war crimes conducted on the NDH territory. This is why in AVNOJ conference Serbs in Croatia were specifically mentioned and was one of the topics they discussed the most (of course Tito then made a deal promising some fake brotherhood and unity). After all if there was no Pavelić regime Serbs will now count 35% of the total population in Croatia and you all know this. Tesla family that was wiped out from Croatia, some members of which ended up in Jasenovac are now been glorified as Croats. Vojvodina even today have status of Autonomous Province within Serbia and was never a real question, after all Serbs in Vojvodina not made a deal with Hungarians before Yugoslavia is created (who were by the way on the side of the axis during the WW2 and with their militia conducted mass expelling and execution of Serbs like for example during the Novi Sad raid). Kosovo is topic for itself, if Serbs were not allowed to be independent in other places then why Albanians are granted those rights? SR Yugoslavia was recognized within its borders afterwards so if they said that no borders are changeable at that point US were directly violating international law by entering the conflict and supporting separatist terrorist group on the ground providing them with logistic, weapons and air support against the state they publicly recognized before. We saw over the time that they are respecting international laws only when it suits them like now in Ukraine, otherwise they will do anything to find excuses for their actions.

The Ustashas killed more Croats than Jews, Roma and Serbs combined (similarly, Nedic's regime in Serbia killed the most Serbs, even much more than Pavelic).
It is very questionable about the camps for children: what would they be used for additional killing when in the death camps the children were already dead after one hour most of the time. These were attempts to save the children, but due to the poor conditions, the mortality rate was above 20%.
Hitler did not approve the genocide of the Serbs and as soon as he found out about it in the summer of 1942, he canceled it.
According to German reports, the Ustashas had minimal support among the Croats. The Croats developed the strongest anti-fascist movement, which Randolph Churchill called the European anti-fascist miracle, which included a large number of Serbs as well as the Jewish Battalion, Czech, Italian...

Yes, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was a dictatorship and Croats were repressed, which led to the rise of the Ustaše. But doesn't justify their collaboration and their crimes, including against other Croats.
The Ustaše gave ethnic Croat land to Italy and Hungary, and let the Germans exploit Croatia and Croats.

Croatia never joined the Axis because NDH was not Croatian state, nor was Pavelić Croatian leader, but Vladko Maček who refused Germany call to be appointed as the head of new Croatian state. ZAVNOH was the real Croatian Government led by Vladimir Nazor and Croatian partisans were real heroes.
Croats and Serbs were both the victims of the Ustashe terrorist regime (most of them were Bosnians and Herzegovinian bandits and outlaws). It is a bit complicated situation here on the Balkans, a foreign historian would hardly understand what were the happenings here that have been existing for centuries.

@@HistoryHustle if the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (with Banovina of Croatia as its part) was offically under occupation (with its regent and heir to the throne and whole government in exile) and considering the fact there were talks between king Petar and Tito on the topics of how should the next Yugoslav Government look like, then it is clear the NDH was not officially Croatia.
It looks all black and white to someone who observes this from a neutral perspective with no knowledge on Croat Serb relations, history of defining national names on the Balkans, ethnic composition, main pro Yugo or pro ustasha agitators among Croats...
