I have one of those too, though mine looks almost new still. Leather is in fantastic shape. The cap you unscrewed is for charging a personal dosimeter. The plastic cap looking looking thing inside the leather lid is for holding a radioactive calibration sample, I forget what element it was at the moment. I ended up printing up an adapter to use regular AA batteries to get mine working again. I did have to replace the Geiger-Muller tubes in it, but they're readily available on ebay. Those devices are surprisingly robust, and more often than not will still work to varying degrees after all these years. It's a little difficult to calibrate them without the sample, but it's not like you're going to be running around and trying to make accurate measurements with them anyway. But they are fun to fart around with.

If you can work out the required voltage required you could make up a rechargeable lithium pack for it. For the foreign text use your phone camera and google translate it will do it live in viewfinder.

Was the floor of the bunker getting damp? It looks possible as the floor covering that was down IE the stuff you took up had no chance of letting air circulate to the concrete, so you'd need a breathable floor covering. Plus I'm surprised about the wood worm but hopefully you've got the treatment sorted 👍
