- With the upcoming release of Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated, I figured now would be a good time to look back on what made the original game so popular in the first place. Join me as I take a dive into elaborating on why I consider BFBB the greatest licensed game ever made (based on a cartoon).
Feel free to share your thoughts as well! Will any of you be picking up Rehydrated when it comes out later this month? You can certainly bet that I'll be snagging a copy for myself, and you can DEFINITELY look forward to a playthrough over on my gaming channel (linked below)!
Let me know what you thought of this video! I think this is something I could see myself doing again for other licensed games based on animated shows, given the right circumstances. Anywhere I can improve? I'm open to criticism!

I swear this game was worse than a crack addiction in my childhood i'd play this non stop from the early mornings to listening to my parents argue about having a divorce to faking illnesses just to play this game
Vibe Officer tough break buddy glad this was here for you
There's a reason why this game is getting a remake .
Yes, better graphics and expansion to more popular consoles like PS4
@@hraftonuser You mean modern consoles. When Battle for Bikini Bottom came out, the Gamecube and the PS2 were the popular consoles at the time.
I hope bold and brash is in squidward's dream
Yes, because it got an active Fanbase, that all love that game. Including a very active Speedrunning Community. There are also a lot of Folks, that got Fans years after Release.
A lot of Fans and - if done right - good publicity, acquiering more Customers outside the Fanbase creates a good chance, it would be succesfull. If that remake is good, they can make a good Profit. Wich would be great - fans, new players and also devs would profit a lot.

Almost there man
@@kurama1606 can't fucking wait
Same only a few days, but still can’t wait
THREE DAYS
Emperor of the Night Skies Thank God someone got the reference! 😂
3:16 You have to remember this is the same guy who put a coin-operated self destruct feature on one of his machines with no override, so its 100% something he'd do.
A nice touch is that during the Mermalair is that the music playing in the level is sounds a lot like the 60s Batman theme which makes sense since Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are based off of them. Great job discussing this game because I love it myself.
Literally got the Rehydrated ad for the Mermalair level when clicking on this video. That’s too perfect.
I can’t wait for Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated later this month
I can't wait a nanosecond.

Good to see you step out of your comfort zine! Great review, brought up a lot of good negatives that I rarely see anyone talk about.
I appreciate that Nick, thanks for the feedback!
i realize Im quite randomly asking but do anybody know a good website to watch newly released movies online?
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is the Best Licensed Game in the world in my Opinion, I have played the Game since it got released in 2003 and I'm so excited for the Remake for PlayStation 4.
For Mr. Krabs's dream what I do is stand behind Squidward, and use the bubble missile, because Slick's attack is blocked By Squidward, so I don't get damaged. That makes the challenge SO MUCH easier! Hope this can help others
Ooooh I never thought to try that, but that sounds like an excellent strategy. Thanks for sharing!
Mr. Krabs dream was hard
"The room that teaches you about damage and health,"
Spongebob: *-OUHW*
14:10 Awwwww poor Patrick all he wanted was a cookie
Man, I remember playing this for days on end being 6 years old. Cannot wait for the rehydrated release
23:05 as far as I know, there have been 0 *proven* reasons as to why clancy and earnest werent brought over to the game. My personal theory is that the game was rushed and those va's were too busy (as the funny yellow sponge man was popular at the time). But anything from the thought that there wasnt enough money in it for our economically corrupt crustacean, or that there were some legal problems with the game.(example: the opening music in the title menu isnt from the show due to certain copyright inconsistencies with federal legislature at the time.) But unless clancy brown comes out with a reason we may never know concretely. Also *RIP Ernest Borgnine, may he guard the pearly gates from the likes of any evil entity to cross his path.*
Here’s to hoping we get the original theme this time. Kind of annoying, but there’s a nostalgic sense to it, it’s a good show.
Clancy was too expensive, and I'm pretty sure Ernest was busy with other things
@@oz3K5 How do you know? Also, what could Ernest have been doing? I would have figured spongebob would have been his whole life, and he wasn't even in many episodes!
I forgot that I'm not the only person that adored this game for years
May recommend Ed Edd n Eddy the mis-Edventures? The game objectively isn't that great, but it's the most tolerable game they got.
I love all of the Cartoon Network games, they were so good even some on their website. Just wish they made em better nowadays because besides the Steven Universe rpg they suck. Hoping that new Samurai Jack ends up to be fun
One of my other favorites was Family Guy Video Game! And back to the multiverse.
yeah mis edventures have great gameplay similar to spongebob
I guess CN wanted to try with their biggest franchises to see if they could make a good game as well. They're both good games but in many cases BFBB is much better.
@@finishem8046 the cartoon network resort game is my personal favorite
When I was around five years old, my cousin was cleaning his garage and his dad found a disc for Battle for Bikini Bottom. It was scratched but the first few levels would still play. Even though I never got far due to the game cutting out, it was still so fun and one of my greatest childhood games. A few years later I found Revenge of the Flying Dutchman and hated every moment playing that game.
Mr. Krabs isn’t voiced by Clancy Brown because he charges more money for voice acting.
Ironic.
It’s weird he voices the character in some of the worst Spongebob games yet the one powerful enough to receive a remake, he’s like “Mmm, think I’ll pass.” That’s the only thing throwing me off in the remake so far lol.
I hope someone realizes how big of a masterpiece the main bosses are
Robo sandy makes you use the bubble bounce and bubble bash, 2 moves you just learned, the robo patrick has you use the bubble bowl which you also just learned, and finally, robo spongebob has you confused on what to do at the beggining, but he then does his slash attack, the player platforms to it and what else to do than to hit it, there the player has learned that to defeat him you must detsroy his green lights, then he does it again, you hit his hand's light again, and robo plankton comes in, you then use the cruise bubble, and then after that the player knows exactly what to do, use the cruise bubble to hit his lights
And at the very end, inside him, you use all the bubble moves you ever learned, the bubble wand, the bubble bash, the bubble bowl, and finally, for the brain, the one and only cruise bubble
And one last thing, how spogebobs dream is menat to be the hardest level in the game, it tells the player to go to kelp forest and the graveyard first, especially with also all them shiny objects you gotta pay
And at the very end of the game, you go to sandys dream, the sliding level, squidwards dream, the platforming level, and mr krabs' dream, the combat level
Bfbb is such a masterpiece
I can definitely say if I knew about this game when I was younger I would have played it and enjoyed it since I'm honestly impressed on how good this game is, I'll definitely try to get the remaster when it releases. I'd totally love to see you cover more games like this in the future.
I'd definitely love to! Glad to hear you'll be getting the remake as well!
You will not regret it my dude. It is a really good game
Not sure why so many people don't like back-tracking, I love when a game has it as it makes me revisit cool zones and find new places in them to explore.
It's just 90% of the time you completed everything and it's boring with nothing there and you think "Why couldn't I have been teleported or use a fast travel?" looking at a vast void.
Depends on how it's done. But most of the time in gaming, it seems like it's to give you unnecessary busy work/a chore instead of a delight.
One thing I always loved about this game as a kid and to this day, is just how immersive(And expansive) it really is. This immersion is encapsulated the best during the boss fights, Mecha Sandy, Patrick, and Spongebob. With mecha Sandy you're thrust into a huge ring having to fight a massive robot. Spongebob's model is made to look especially small here when put against the other much larger features such as the ring and the enemy, making you as well feel small and it feel very high-stakes and serious. You feel like you're the weak and small Spongebob and that it's a real boss fight. Also the mechanic features of the bots are so subtle that you wouldn't notice them if you don't pay attention to detail and that helps to make it all the more creepy that you're fighting something that looks like the beloved character you know such as Sandy or Patrick, but you know it isn't them and you can see the inhuman features that remind you that they're a monstrous imitation of that character.
At least these are my thoughts, how I felt as a kid and it played a huge part into why I loved the game so much. I rewatched a playthrough of the original and the same feelings came flooding back. I love it.
The golden spatula is a reference to the episode "Plankton" in which Plankton attempts to bribe Spongebob with a golden spatula.
Does Neopets The Darkest Faerie count as a "licensed game?"
It's pretty much a Zelda game, and it's one of my favorite PS2 games ever.
That was a good game though it did have a lot of backtracking.
BAI GAMING
I only recall most the dungeons forcing you to backtrack.
Other than that, it's structured pretty much like Link to the Past. Hell, maybe with even with more freedom considering Act 3.
In my opinion Ocarina of Time has way more "backtracking" *cough,* Temple of Time, *cough.*
If you meant running back-and-forth in the semi-open world... then what did you expect? It's a 3D adventure game with optional sidequests and hidden treasure.
Again... just like Zelda.
Outstanding video. You hit the nail on the head with everything this game had to offer. Definitely one my best childhood experiences.
The voice actor of mr.krabs asked more money than heavy iron studios could give, so that's why he didnt reprize his role in the game
any proof or interviews?
@@th3graveofwrath354 read it somewhere but dont know where anymore. So i guess not really
The audio balance issue is a thing that happens on the Gamecube version only. It mostly is a Dolphin emulator hiccup.
It's not a Dolphin issue, it happens on the original Gamecube version too lol.
@Shadow Streak the dude literally said it happens on both.
I’ve played the Xbox and ps2 versions and can definitely confirm the examples he gave. Especially the flies in Sandys dream good lord
I really like Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak, though technically it is anime not cartoon.
YESSSSS!!!! I want a remake of that game so badly!!!!!
I love that game and Ham-Hams Unite too.
No idea what that is, but does it star the ham-mer robot from BFBB?
Anime and cartoons are the same thing.
Same thing
Actually Patrick's dream was cut because Mr. Krabs already had a food themed dream and they didn't want to be redundant
I feel like the water having such a loud sound was meant to enhance the atmosphere of that particular part of the level (which for me, it did), but I can see how it be jarring for some. What bothers me more personally about the sound is that the tracks don't properly loop, which is something I'm hoping the remake fixes, even if we don't get new remixes.
Audio issues are only present on the GameCube version, due to the compression. Blame Nintendo's shitty mini-DVDs.
I thought "Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie" or just King Kong the game for short was a very good licensed game as well.
Also I think the reason why Clancy Brown didn't voice Mr. Krabs was either because he was to busy at the time or they couldn't afford him. It's also a shame that there is no new dialogue for the remake outside of the scrapped levels so he won't be voicing him still.
Oioooh PPG changed a lot!
Great video brotha. Well put together
Loved this new type if vids! Wish to see more content like this once you finish PPG
Fun fact: That stone tiki mission is very easily cheesable, get the tiki handed to you, throw it in the front of the cliff, get on it, and jump on the ledge
I wish I'd known that sooner!
As a bfbb speedrunner, seeing this video in my recommended made my left nipple hard enough to cut diamonds. Much respect 🙏.
On the issue of the sound balancing with the waterfalls and stuff like that. I believe that was a problem exclusive to the GameCube version, I know they aren't present in the Xbox version.
Really Excellent review. Great job, Shadow. You're still Incredibly Amazing. And yes, i will Definitely pick up the remake (Rehydrated) when it comes out since i don't own the original game. You can count on that.
Thanks a ton! Glad to hear you'll be getting the game too!
"This game is pretty easy overall"
*RidersDX has left the chat*
definitely one of the Best SpongeBob video games ever made can't wait to play the remake of Battle for Bikini Bottom Reyharted on my XBOX ONE
Before this video started, I saw an advert for THIS GAME! *I am so excited to play this again!*
Never got to play this one, but I did play the SpongeBob Movie game.
You have to get this next week my man. This is an amazing game
Bradley Smith
Was planning on it.~
I loved that game too.
I played this game about as much as I did Toy Story 2 on the PSOne.
Crazy how good IP tie-in games can actually be, if the developers cared about the gameplay on top of the source material.
Toy Story 2 was great.
I always like to think what makes a game great is called explorability. Many places to explore, items to collect, and all of the small but amazing details.
very well made video! glad you enjoyed the game!
Imagine if we have a Squidward's Suicide reference in this games revamp
NorthWestern Railway66 too bad it got edited out

@@feIon That would fuck so hard
Maybe we'll get the same treatment we did in Weirdland and it does make it in, only to be removed in a patch shortly after the release.
They referenced it in a episode
Awesome video! I'm so hyped for Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated
Same here!
this was a great video to watch thxs Shadow
Glad you enjoyed it!
To touch on another (possible) reference, I think him wearing multiple underwear is a reference to The Secret Box, when at the end of Spongebob's rambling of secrets, he ends it on, "I'm wearing 3 pairs of underwear right now!"
Even the damn health meter is a reference.
I would love to see more of these game reviews!
This was an awesome video you really nailed all the points of this amazing game you sir have earned yourself a new subscriber can't wait to check out your other videos 😊
Glad you enjoyed it :D
I remember playing this game a lot when I was a kid. I had a few other Spongebob games, but this was always my favorite.
nice im glad to see you branch out a bit more
I got a commercial for “Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated” both before & during this video.
I like the Barnyard video game for PS2. Sure it’s a little weird, but it has charm that made me want to play through the game again recently. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but I still really enjoyed the game regardless.
Oh, and the Disney Cars video game is also really good.
Watched pretty much most of the reviews of this game, but yours is definitely the best one. If I could show one video to a friend to show what the game is like, I would pick yours.
Wow, thanks! I'm glad you liked it :D
I worked really hard on this review, so I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as you did. Comments like yours definitely make it feel worth it.
@@ShadowStreak Haha yeah! I can really tell that you put a lot of effort into it. Keep doing what you're doing!
This game has such a Jak and Daxter The Precursor Legacy vibe. That game came out in 2001, check it out and you'll see what I mean.
Mrs. Puff: Well done patrick. you're a real _star_
Patrick: Can I get a cookie?
Mrs. Puff: N o .
Me: :KEKw:
Im glad they “rehydrated” it. As soon as the remastered came out, I bought it and downloaded asap and already beat the game. Gave me alot of childhood memories and enjoyed the multiplayer mode they included
I’ve been saying this for years! I’m so excited to play rehydrated. And then let’s hope for a spongebob the movie remake
3:16 - I'm a sucker for modularity
Just completed Rehydrated. There were some noticable changes that made the game both easier and a little more difficult. All in all it's what you would expect for a remake. Did I like all of the changes? Not really, some decisions were puzzling to me. Did I have alot of fun playing it again on a system I can take with me on the go?! Oh hell yes. Excellent despite some flaws.
I consider the two South Park games to be the best licensed games based off of a cartoon, but this game is pretty up there. I played it all the time as a kid.
Oh yeah, the South Park games are definitely worthy of being recognized as some of the best as well!
Fractured But Whole was phenomenal.
Woah. Let’s not pretend like Hit & Run is only decent. That game is top tier and deserves more respect
I think the underwear health is another reference, I can't remember which episode, but SPongebob was listing off a lot of things about him and one thing he said was "And I'm wearing three pairs of underwear right now." whether it was intentional or not, I fucking love this game and I'm about to blow knowing the remake is 4 days away.
23:37 Tbh, I always liked Robo-Patrick sequences bc of how waky he was on his try to save Squidward and happy he is after being saved by Sandy.
0:37 I remember getting Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for GC and the game froze after 5 minutes. Never got to play it, but now I'm glad I didn't. Lol
If I am correct, Clancy Brown didn't play Mr. Krabs because they *wouldn't pay him enough money.*
Ironic, I know!
Dawg. The gameboy version was awesome. I played that for hours and hours and even went back to it as an adult and beat it. It’s 100% worth.
i hope hoping and PRAYING that the remake is at least as good and keeps the charm as the original. it would be an absolutely damn shame if they somehow mess it up
I like how he showed the booklet that we used to throw away instead of the old gba box.
All I had as a kid was the PC version.
I'm finally going to play the true version with Rehydrated, and I couldn't be more hyped.
Monsters Inc., Stuart Little 2, Finding Nemo, The Fairly Odd Parents: Breakin' Da Rules, The Cat in the Hat, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Shrek 2, The Fairly Odd Parents: Shadow Showdown, Robots, Madagascar, Chicken Little, Shrek SuperSlam, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, Cars, Barnyard, Open Season, Shrek the Third and Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs were all good licensed games in my opinion. A lot of licensed games are great they just don't get talked about very much.
bro when i play the remake i’m gonna cry of nostalgia 😭😭😭
Supposedly Clancy Brown wasn't in because he just wasn't interested in doing the game. My only source on this was TVTropes so it may not be true
This game and the Simpsons: hit and run is the awesome license games ever made
Hahah I have the GameBoy version! And you won't believe me when I tell you this but, one night I was bored with going through like, the second area with Robot Patrick. I wanted to reach the final level so I guess the passwords and it seemed to take me further or back. But then when I put Z0XY as a password, I unlocked all the levels and the final boss! That blew me away as a child!
I actually really enjoyed the Kelp Forrest portion of the game. It was challenging, and had a cool vibe to it.
The audio balancing issue you mentioned is unique to the GameCube version, including emulation. The game is most optimized both in audio and visuals on the Xbox version. Not to mention the game loads the quickest on Xbox models with Samsung disk drives.
Edit: I don't know about Ernest Borgnine, but I heard Clancy Brown was busy with another job at the time of development so they had to get Joe Whyte to do both of the voices.
Literally my favorite 3D platformer of all time. I know this game like the back of my hand
I would say my favourite 3D platformer is either Sonic Adventure 2, or Crash 3.
21:30 The audio problems with the volume mixing only happen on the GameCube version of the game. It’s probably a byproduct of having to compress sounds and textures to fit on a 1.3GB mini-disc.
You don't even have to explain yourself to me. We know very well that BFBB is the best licensed game ever made. So slick. Simpsons Hit and Run is an honorable mention for sure though.
But The Batman Arkham games
heh. slick.
Most SpongeBob games that came out during that era were pretty much all good. Battle for Bikini Bottom was legendary and the game based off the Movie was also great (I never played it unfortunately). Creature from the Krusty Crab was also another great game from my childhood, I never hear it being talked about much
I loved this game in inclusion with The Movie game and Truth or Square. There is this one game tho on the gamecube I had which featured Timmy Turner, Danny Phantom, Jimmy Neutron, and Sponegbob. Anyone remember that?
Nicktoons battle for volcano island. Love that game
@@armon2727 Oh yeah I had that one, but the other one I had that me and my brother played a lot was the Unite one. "Ahhh, don't eat me!"

Heavy Iron: I gotta embrace the property! I gotta sniff the property! I gotta lick the property! I gotta wash the property, I gotta date the property, I gotta BE THE PROPERTY!!
The remaster is sooooo good. Def worth the cash!
I loved this game and i loved how they followed the formula with truth or square i hope they remake that one too
It's downloading on my Switch now! I can't wait to play againnn.
Mr Krabs original voice actor was voice acting for the game Jak 2 during the game development hence why Mr Krabs has a different voice actor in this game
Just platinumed the remake. Sooo good! Definitely not without its flaws but a testament to how ahead of its time it was.
I still think it’s super cool how you are able to enter robo spongebob
Patrick’s dream gave me the biggest grin when I was a kid.
This whole time I thought you had to break everything in his house and I was jumping around while I broke stuff
Thank you 9 year old me for convincing your parents to go out and buy this game when I game out. Even as a young'in I could sort out the wheat from the chaffe when it came to licensed games
Loved this game as a kid. As far as licensed games go, it's right below the original SW Battlefront 2 and Spider-Man 2
I just got the remastered ad form this oof
Clicks on video
Gets Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated ad right off the bat
What are the odds? xD
I dont know about Mermaid Man but for Mr Eugene Krabs voice actor was recording lines for another game at the time called Jack, so he couldn't really make it
Honestly, as far as Licensed games, another contender for the best is Astro Boy: Omega Factor
I super recommend it!
It's for the GBA, made by Sega and Treasure
It's a beat em up with RPG elements that combines characters from Osamu Tezuka's works in a way he loved to do, but to a 10
I think squidward was originaly going to be playable, since he is the only npc to appear in the chum bucket cutscene (boss intro/outro), like why would he even be there in the first place if he wasnt helping with the robot
Mr Streak, Lord of Shadows, I highly encourage you to take a look at the original XBOX port of Battle For Bikini Bottom. It combines the higher resolution textures of the PS2 version with the perfect amount of vibrancy the other two consoles lack, without going too far, which I feel the Rehydrated remaster has done, going by existing footage. The Gamecube version of this game suffered in the graphical department due to the storage limitations of the Gamecube's Mini-Disc.
