- Maybe one of the most known buildings in the Los Angeles area, and easily the best known donut shop in the United States, Randy's Donuts has been around since the 1950s when it was the Big Donut Drive-In. Located right off Interstate 405 in Inglewood, Randy's has been featured in numerous films and television shows. Recently we had a chance to stop by, explore Randy's, and try a few of the donuts.

Nothing beats the days when the Helms Bakery Truck use to drive down the streets of L.A. everyday and you could get fresh baked pastries brought to you right at your front door. I can still remember the taste and smell of the fresh baked pastries from the truck. The good old days, when service meant something.
Great video of an iconic location! I chuckled right out loud seeing your little fella attacking that gigantic cinnamon roll!😄 That was great!
lol, and his terrific acting "mmm, (swallows) it's so good" really believable, LOL
Thanks for acknowledging that it was originally The Big Donut. I lived in the vicinity from 1950-1972. It was a landmark even when I was a kid. I never knew it as Randy's, and it will always be the Big Donut drive-in.
Just saw your video and I grew up by Randy's in the 70s, believe it or not, I don't remember ever getting a donut from there during my youth, also during the 70s, the building right next door from Randy's used to be a "Pup'n Taco" which was a fast food chain back in them days...they sold really good Hot Dogs and Tacos, the group of guys from I hung around with from Iglewood High School, we used to know a guy fron school that worked there and he'd give us free food every once in a while...this video brought back a ton of memories for me...Thanks Steve!
I know this is a couple of years ago, but after all the buildup, seeing you look grimly at the camera and say, "I don't like doughnuts" was just hilarious!
I still don't like them!
Oh my goodness I lived not too far from the donut shop in the 50,s and 60,s the donut,s were Great 😋😋😋😋yummies my favorite is filled donut with the jelly in the middle,,and so thank you for the memories ,,to the Steve family
I love it!. I actually have a N scale version of this donut store on my N Scale train layout!
Also in "Mars Atracks" the movie when there heads explode the color green.
My daughter actually worked for a Donut shop in Portland called Voo Doo donuts that has similiar donuts!
The location is even more famous for donuts commemorating the transport of the Endeavor space shuttle.
When I was a kid, we would drive past Randy's Donuts on the way to my aunt and uncle's house in Westchester. My sister and I called the thing The Giant Cheerio.
Had many many Randy donuts. Grew up just down the road
Grew up a few blocks away from Randy's. It was actually "The Big Donut" before it became Randy's.
Awesome video!
Took my sons there in 1998 and they loved it. I remember going there in the late 50's with my patients.
I remember this from the Simpsons ! ❤️👍 Hi guys, new sub from Australia here👍❤️👋🇦🇺
Thanks for subbing!
I love donuts. You guys pick all my favorite donuts. I never knew anyone that did not like donuts. You are really unique Sidetrack Adventure.
I know! I've just never liked them for some reason.
The cinnamon roll is the only one there I'd buy, it's my go to doughnut. Those others are novelty kid's doughnuts. I grew up in Oakland going to Colonial Doughnuts on Lakeshore. Their's were the best and the standard by which I judge all doughnuts. Come to Oakland and do a video on Colonial. As always, great video.
Will have to check it out next time we are in the area.
"It's so good." - Awesome acting! 😂
I liked how your son had a little difficulty lifting that huge cinnamon bun. You just knew the kid would pick the biggest one 😉. I can't believe you do not like donuts but at least you tried one. I may have picked the one you did as I like cherry. Donuts are a weakness for me and after seeing this video I want to go get some. Later.
Not liking donuts is like not liking air
I'm getting hungry!
I was a regular customer at this Randy's when I worked for Pan Am Airlines from 1987 to 1991. The coffee and chocolate was much better than most donut shops. I remember the two brothers who owned the shop. One of the brothers told me they spend extra for the ingredients, and that makes for a better product. The brothers have since sold the business, and I have not been there in many years.
I relate to your sentiment about donuts. I kind of like them but I have to be in the mood for them. I rarely am. I don't like donuts as much as I used to. There's a Krispy Kreme a few blocks away from me and I'm not exactly a regular there.
I don’t like those kinds of donuts either, but thanks for making the video. I commuted for work, from San Diego to the LAX airport for 6 years. I would pass by that donut shop on the way to work, as it’s close to the LAX employee parking lots. I’ve always wondered what it was like to get donuts from there. Thanks again:)
Those look great
This place looks AWESOME! I feel like it's somewhere Homer Simpson would be right home.... Whenever a local joint like that has a long line like that you KNOW you're in for a treat. 🍩
Great place.
The family-owned company that runs Randy’s Donuts has been expanding operations and is ready to go global. They’ve opened roughly half a dozen stores in SoCal (a few with the giant donut on the roof) with more to come and plan to open in South Korea and Saudi Arabia.
Really cool. I've seen the one in Hollywood.
Here we were watching this video about donuts, and started thinking about Homer Simpson, and came across your Homer picture right as we had that thought! So fitting, it must be a sign we should go out and get some donuts! 😊 🍩
I heard too that they are bringing here in the Philippines
Between cartoons, films, tv and video games, I feel like this place is all too familiar. The fact that its been around so long means one of these days I will have to give it a try if in the area. The blueberry one looks delicious. There's a place called Local Donut over in Scottsdale out here that seems insanely popular but haven't dragged myself out of bed to drive over before they sell out so I can't comment on how good they are.
Will remember Local Donut for next time we are in that area, though truth be told I'd eat Chino Bandido three meals a day if they'd let me!
the Donut Hole 15300 Amar Rd. La Puente, CA. 91744. The building is a Landmark. It is in the shape of a giant donut, you can drive through the hole of the donut or walk up to the donut to place your order. The Donut Hole was featured in the movie "Moving Violations" where Chief Fromm's car was bashed. also it is shown in the opening scenes of the 1987 film "Dragnet".
I've actually seen it. It looks amazing. Love unique buildings like that.
AHH!! I hung out around this area a lot playing GTA San Andreas. Of course, the names and a bit of the area were changed for the game, but as soon as I seen this I was like "I know that spot" lol.
I used to to deliver to the business right behind Randy's. While waiting to get unloaded, I had to indulge.
Great video!!! Best part = your reveal that you don't like donuts! So whose idea was this trip? ;) Love it; enjoy all your videos. I'm a Vermonter and they all make me want to come west sometime.
Donut shop I'd recommend if you ever make a trip east to my native Pennsylvania = Yum Yum Bake Shops in suburban Philly.
And of course someday you've got to go north of the border and try Tim Hortons.
I wanted to check out the donut shop, but didn't want the donuts! We have some Yum Yums around here. Is it the same chain?
@@SidetrackAdventures It doesn't look like they are. The website mentions only the three suburban Philly locations.
For those that remember.... in downtown Jackson, ca (in Gold Country) on Main Street was Swiss Model Bakery. It's gone now(the owners retired) and Brickhouse Brews (which is a great burger and brews place) is now there
but the donuts at Swiss Model was beyond belief! Each donut was a work of art rather than just throw everything at it (AKA Randy's). Both had cinnamon rolls but I remember
the Swiss Model rolls being finger food basically.... they were so soft you'd pinch a bite and it came apart...one piece at a time.
Donut Bar in San Diego rules over all others.
Mary's Donuts. Santee.
Will have to check it out.
@@sdbobbyt Definitely! IMHO Mary's bests them all.
No honey wheat?? What the shizzle
MrSteve doesn’t like donuts😵💫. Nobody’s perfect😱
We just got a Randy's store in Bakersfield. The vanilla and maple crullers are great. I was disappointed when the pink icing with sprinkles fell off my raised doughnut in a big sheet.
We don't have a big doughnut on top of the building here - just a picture on the side.
Wow, I can't believe they wouldn't put a big donut up. That's like McDonalds not having the arches.
@@SidetrackAdventures Maybe they will eventually. I believe they are renting now. Perhaps if they buy a building, they will put the donut up.
Such cuties. You are a very sweet family and very pretty wife.
🤗
Did you say that was the second location? Where was the first location?
Is the roof donut 🍩 metal or fiberglass?
So cool! I'm sorry you don't like donuts!! But you should still go to The Donut Hole in La Puente. It's a drive thru, and you actually drive through the donut hole!! They had the best donuts I've ever eaten. I've also tried Randy's, the same location you're at, and they were good, but a little dry, I thought. Still, the location and donut on the top are really cool, and it's consistently in the top donut shops in LA, so maybe I was there a little too late to get a fresh donut! Good video!
I will definitely stop next time we are in the area. I've actually seen it before and love the building and really wanted to drive through the donut.
Is that the original store? Have they always cooked in one building and sold donuts at the other? What is the location of that store?
Its the original Randys, the 2nd building is an addition, they are on Manchester near LAX in Inglewood.
Anyone tell you, you look like Ice T
Now Do Pinky's
Sorry, I meant Pinks
The Simpsons
Sir I’m going to have to ask you to exit the donut.
No doughnuts for me. I'll take In and Out anytime.
I'd always take In N Out over a donut.
a green tea doughnut ....that just screams 'L.A.' ........and not in a good way .
