The 1980s was the peak of humanity. The peak of creativity. The last era when things were normal. Human beings were entirely different...almost like an alien species compared to people of today. If you were blessed enough to have experienced the 80s then you are one lucky person.

Greatest comment. I tell this to my 19 year old. It is a lost time that will never return. He has fully embraced 80s music 🎶 Kids have nothing in terms of musical talent to anchor themselves in the current climate. Truly sad.

He tried so hard to be like the inimatable Diamond Dave but a keen listener could see right through it. Brett Michaels of Poison did the same thing. Everybody wanted to be Dave. This performance further proves that VH was the greatest American Rock band of all time. DLR was the greatest front man of all time. There was and will be nothing like him. No need to go into EVH. We all know he was the king. And Michael and Alex made all the difference. There is no band today or in History that wanted to come on stage after Van Halen.

" VH was the greatest American Rock band of all time." Never really thought about it....but you could be right here. They are not even close to my pick for Worlds Greatest Rock and Roll Band...THE WHO....or a couple other mostly "British Invasion" bands like Deep Purple. But I do know VH was the BEST rock band that debuted 1978 or later....by FAR. I still think The Beach Boys would have to keep #1 as far as overall importance to American Rock and Roll though. VH gets to be #2.

"There is no band today or in History that wanted to come on stage after Van Halen." Agree 100% because as an "opening act" they blew EVERY headliner off the stage in order, Journey 78, Black Sabbath 78 and the Rolling Stones 81 (I saw all three).

      @BazookaToe Před 11 měsíci +6

It’s something I’ve thought about often. I’m with you on The Beach Boys as far as song importance, but as the whole enchilada not so much. Then I go back to The Doors, then throw Aerosmith in the mix, then wonder about the classic era of KISS, then wind up coming back to my first thought that classic Van Halen was just fucking untouchable.

WOW! Guess we all have different experiences with Mr Roth, let me share mine. Saw Roth 5 times with VH and once on his own at the Del Mar Fair in SD CA. Starting in 78 after their fist album -- and I was there at the US Festival in 83.
In 78 I was 15 yrs old born and raised in LA County CA, all thee other shows were at the LA Forum.
In 78 Roth performed well *3 songs "I forgot the phucking words" which was funny at the time, went back to school told my friends thought it was a novelty. Then each show after that was a phucking JOKE! I soon realized this guy is not coming prepared to his shows. Only his circus act and outfits are prepared.
More than half the songs Roth never sang `all the lyrics, and the "I forgot the phucking words" was becoming redundant!
It was soooo bad at the US Festival that out of 300k people waiting for the headliner VH, 200k walked out because of Roth. It was like the exodus of Egypt, on the right side of the stage, i'll never forget that image in my mind.
Everyone was saying Scorpions took the show followed by Judas Priest, Triumph and Ozzy. Out of 5 shows with VH Roth was a major major major disappointment 4 out of the 5 shows that I saw VH.
What was mind boggling at the Del Mar Fair in the 90's I took my wife and young daughter to the Fair we watched Roth and lol i'm here to tell you I was freaking out the guy sang all the words/lyrics and no mistakes just put on an epic performance,! Seriously till this day I can't figure it out...? (Why was he so on, and with VH so OFF??)
Roth's gymnastics, outfits and circus act turned into a big phucking joke/mockery because he couldn't remember the words and coming in late on verses and choruses; way too much to list on what I witnessed.
I DO understand it's "show business" but personally i'm not into the Circus Act shat. Saw VH three times with Sammy.
Sammy on the other hand, showed up BIG TIME and gave it 100% with basically no mistakes, maybe a lil human error here or there but live NO PHUCKING COMPARISON WHATSOEVER, Sammy LIVE ruled hands down! With Roth I WANTED 25% OF MY MONEY BACK!!!
Don't believe me about a lol Circus act? Remember when Roth was masturbating with his baton and hit himself in the nose, blood everywhere and beyond broke his nose? I mean Diamond Dave learn your parts first, then jerk off with your baton.
I'm sooo phucking sick of people saying Roth is the greatest. Yes the first four albums VH put out were thee greatest no one can touch that ever I agree *IN THE STUDIO!!.*
But live??!! Live Roth was a joke and an extreme dissapointmen 70% of the time!
Don't believe me? Ask the 200k people who at the US Festival waited for the headliner VH and suffered in the extreme heat just to get the phuck out of there because of Roth.
Whats your top 10 favorite bands? Now imagine seeing said bands and the drummer or the singer or the guitarist "forgets" his or her parts half of the time they're up there lol I mean would you speak up, or shut up??
Sorry Roth will not get a pass with me, maybe with you people that didn't see him live... Just holding up the Mirror, guess y'all don't like what you see and/or like the truth. Not trying to bash Mr Roth just telling my experiences, and sick of hearing lmAO "he's the greatest" shat.
Couldn't imagine paying high dollar to see Elton John or whoever and he's phucking up every 3rd song lol. Peace (and sorry long winded.)

Oh, there was another pretty hungry, fast-and-furious, up-and-coming heavy metal band that in and around the time of the 1983 US Festival were still in NY, finishing their first album, they were from L.A. originally, too but lets say the early 80's metal scene couldn't handle them there, so they relocated to S.F., made it their new home/headquarters and over the next decade, became a heavier, faster, more aggressive form of music Van Halen could ever dream of.
That band was Metallica and if 1983/84 was where Van Halen began reaching their creative/artistic peak, their worst, unadulterated forms of excesses began to slowly to rot the group from within, whereas Metallica was hungry, angry, ready to seek and destroy not just the heavy metal universe, but eventually a portion of late 20th century American music.
Metallica was the Led Zeppelin of Gen-X, my generation as Zeppelin was from the late 60's-1980. That's the best, most accurate musical analogy I can compare Metallica to and even most of their hardcore fans I've talked to over the years agree with that analogy.

VH will always be an amazing milestone in rock history. With that being said, to make the claim Triumph was past their prime is sophomoric. Their performance is posted on YT and they were tight and on that day. Ric Emmett is an underappreciated and extremely talented guitar player and way better singer than DLR.

Triumphs performance was too me top 3. I had an album or 2 being from TO, so Canadian music was pushed on radio stations but their performance in the broad daylight either before Motley Crue or right after was energized and tight with Emmett playing fantastic guitar and singing his heart out while doing the hard rock triathalon and stealing the show. Not bad for another power trio hailing from Toronto

After the show Sun. nite the pkg lot traffic jam was insane. They had dirt-made burms to guide traffic. I dug out much as i cld of the burm with my bare hands. Got back in the Cav and punched it like Dukes of Hazzard. No time to wait, had to be in Vegas to catch a 8am flight home and barely made it bc we still had to stop at the Las Vegas Hilton to get our things. Most memorable event of my life. And we did it all for Van Halen.

As a stroke surviving drummer of the 80s & early 90s who definately got wtf ever it was to get, & then some "now" lol, I always thought DLR was cool, but the past few yrs of watching clips & interviews, I realize he was much more than just cool, he was, & will always be legend. Seriously, I dont really keep up with the Taylor Swifts, Eminems, or whatevers popular these days, all I know is its no way in fucking hell, they could ever come close to living what he lived in that limited access / actual rock star era, & live to tell about it lol. DLR for the win! #themoreyouknow

When I was growing up I tried desperately to learn to play the guitar and had long blonde hair.
I thought I could be a combination of Eddie and David together.
Well neither one worked out lol.

As much as I love VH, Triumph stole the show that day, and the commentary should have reflected a little better. They were on tour at the time, and were tight as shit.
Remember having the US fest bootleg and watching it till the tape started to crumble.
There was something to be said about having less choice of entertainment, unlike today.
Watching my only copy of the US fest fade away like a memory, actually had the opposite affect and thus solidified that concert as a decade defining moment in my mind.
There is no US in the me generation. For now anyway.

Memory Lane. Made the drive with 3 friends from San Diego, California. I was 19 at the time. Our goal was to work our way as close to the stage as possible once the first act started. By the time the Scorpions took the stage we were pretty close. It took us at least 8 to 10 hours and worth every minute! Favorite performances were Judas Priest, Scorpions and Van Halen. I still have my ticket stub from this iconic music event. So cool to see this footage there's not much in the internet with US festival coverage. Thanks to whom ever posted this for everyone to see!

The night before when we got there, with so much booze and other stuff, we celebrated with excess like VH. In the morning we barely made our way to the gate, wearing my camouflage Iron Maiden (#of beast tour)jersey, every artist killed it.
