Couldn’t agree more. Nobody lets a song “breathe” anymore. (Well, I am sure some artists do, but it’s woefully lacking in today’s world of auto tune, click tracks, and “Pro Tools.”) Grateful I came of age in the 60’s and 70’s.

Santana is the best soloists of all time ,bar none , specially if you consider the melodic emotional and lyrical aspect of playing , tons of people can play great runs and do technical wizardry but the emotion in his playing is unsurpassed, the crazy thing is a lot of his best solos are not generally known to even some of his big fans .

What can be said? Carlos Santana is another level. From his acid induced legendary Woodstock performance to his collaboration with the world’s finest, Miles Davis and Eric Clapton to name a few, we are fortunate to live in a time with Carlos. He survived many tragedies and lost famous peers along the way only to re-emerge and revive the music industry.
Santana evolved over time in various genres from jazz to classic rock, blues and guitar instrumentals. No matter what sound, Santana offers a relaxing voyage, a romantic mood or some dancing . It’s all there.

Jay, you should lose bets more often! jk Finally, Please give Joe Satriani a try. He's been doing guitar-led instrumentals for the better part of his four-decade career. He's one of the GOATs as far as guitarists go. Try "Flying In a Blue Dream", "Time", "One Big Rush" or "Surfing With the Alien" to see what I mean.

Santana played at the Greek Theater in LA a number of years back, maybe 15 years ago. As it was in my younger days, I didn’t have money for shows always, so at times we would hike into the hills behind the amphitheater, and this is how I saw Santana … (also Al Green and 1/2 a Radiohead show).
At one point in the show during a song break, blue lights shot out from the stage and into the hills where we were. We were not the only ones up there, but the lights shown directly on a friend and I, and Carlos himself saluted with a dedication, “This one is for the people in the hills!”
I can’t remember what song it was he played then, but I do remember he finished with a killer cover of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme”.

Rob Squad has been sadly negligent vis a vis Santana. More please!! "Oye Como Va" and "Samba Pa Ti" and "Smooth" or "Maria Maria."

It amazes me how there are many lead guitar players that as soon as you hear it, you know exactly who it is.
Carlos Santana is one of those fabulous people. ❤

The live version on "MoonFlower" is THE version to hear first. As good as this is the live is SO much better. In fact, everything on Moonflower is phenomenal.

So glad you finally got around to listening to Europa. Now, you REALLY need to check out Gatto Barbieri's cover of Europa. Light some candles, dim the lights, and prepare to be amazed. Gatto's version should come with a WARNING!!

Guys! I am so glad you finally played this one! Now, you should find the cover version of Europa by a cat named “Gato” Barbieri. He’s a sax player, passed now, that did an amazing version of his friend Carlos’ song.

One of my favorites tunes by Santana and I believe this cut is from the "Moonflower Album" which was excellent but he did do this song on "Sacred Fire" album as well and took it up a notch because it was live.

Amber you are right, Carlos started out as the “Santana Blues Band”. He came to San Francisco from Tijuana, Mex. as a kid. His dad played in bands in T.J. and had young Carlos playing with him at these clubs. As he grew older he wanted to play and did start his own Blues band. The Famous music empresario “Bill Graham” heard him play and asked him to work in his famous club, “Fillmore West” (washing dishes) apprenticing there with his band. In 1969 Michael Wadlegh was putting together a little 3 day Outdoor concert in “Woodstock, N.Y.” and wanted Bill to send him Musicians that he had signed, such as Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone, Country Joe & the Fish, etc. etc. Bill said “sure, but I also have a new young band that I know you will love, they play Afro-Cuban Rock”. Wadlegh said “send them!” and the rest was history. Santana is a Guitar God! Please, next time and ever time , React to his Video’s, he’s so much better to watch working his magic on the guitar. Check out his “Europa” Live from Mexico……. SanJoséBob

Santana bassist Benny Rietveld once commented that when the band played Europa before its Supernatural album success in 1999, the fans would go crazy when they heard Carlos start playing the first few notes of Europa. After the Supernatural album success, Benny said that many of the new fans reacted like, "What's this?" It's not surprising since the band continues to garner fans from new generations, many who have yet to discover the vastness of band's iconic song catalog dating back more than 50 years.
