Blood Meridian is one of my favorite books of all time, introducing me to many works of Cormac McCarthy and giving me an understanding of literature and atrocities of man at such a young age. Judge Holden has to be one of the most terrifying villains in any book or piece of media I’ve consumed. While the story doesn’t outright show you what he’s done (there are plenty of things he’s done in the story dw), he’s is portrayed in such a way as a supernatural force that could never be stopped, described in a way where your brain is forced to paint a horrifying picture of such a man, who is more a less a ruthless deity than a man. Blood Meridian will continue to be one of my favorite pieces of literature ever, being helped more by the presence of such an evil, but also not romanticizing the Wild West as something like in old novels or movies, but showing the brutality of man, holding no punches while you go on a wild ride.
