    To anyone out there facing the choices of hip surgery: I had a 6 year old golden retriever who had the " gold standard " total hip replacement, and it was great until the cement, that held the new ball into the femur, let go, causing more pain than previously. The second choice of the free floating hip worked VERY well. The muscles and tendons made up for the lack of actual hip ball and socket. She was a wonderful dog.

      Speaking as someone who bought a tiny pomeranian recently, i did so because there were no small dogs available in shelters. There are very few small dogs in shelters because they are almost always adopted out immediately because everyone wants them(at least where I live). I wanted a dog that was a similar size to my other dog who i did get from a shelter.... but getting my shelter dog took months because as i said small dogs are rarely in shelters. I checked every shelter within 200 miles of my home and applied for countless shelter dogs.

      I have a pure bred chihuahua and I got him from a shelter that rescues dogs that are about to be euthanized in the pound. I never thought I’d have a small dog especially a pure breed. There’s no excuse for buying from a breeder!!!

    • @alisav8394
      @alisav8394 Před 4 lety +46

      Well... I'm thinking about buying a quite expensive pure breed dog because I need a specific breed that can't be found in shelters around me. I need a smaller dog with very short fur that doesn't bark often (or at all) and isn't very energetic (if properly walked 3 times a day). People buying pure breed dogs is not the problem, it's the backyard breeders who produce lots of mixed breed puppies no one wants!

      @doloresreynolds8145 Před 4 lety +12

      Alice W Funny, the traits you want sound like a Great Dane, except for the size. They have very short fur, they are lazy, and except for needing a walk and potty breaks they lay around a lot. They're usually docile as well, though puppies of any breed are somewhat energetic when young.

    • @doloresreynolds8145
      @doloresreynolds8145 Před 4 lety +5

      As much as I love Vet Ranch, they would totally have amputated the leg without even considering another option. Compared to Bondi Vet and Dr Scott, they seem to be like: "Oh, cat/dog broke their toe? Amputate the whole leg!" very quickly.
      At least Dr Scott, Dr Chris, Dr Lisa etc try everything in their power to avoid amputation, it's only their last resort (like it's meant to be)!

      or just a very unlucky little boy.. we have a cat who came from the same breeder as two of our other cats wich are perfectly healthy and happy she however has a joint issue similar to this dog except in her case it's not as bad and the vet said she most likely won't ever need surgery as long as she doesn't overexert those joints. (even though she is a silly little goose that jumps higher than all of the others) the breeder she came from wanted to breed with her initially but when she found out she had a hip problem she decided to get her spayed and find her a forever home.. right around the time my mum wanted an extra cat to add to the bunch so we stumbled upon her and we were sold as soon as we saw her adorable little face.. she was just an unlucky one though just like the brother of one of our cats.. he ended up dieing very early on because of a heart problem wich wasn't even genetic in the first place he was just born unlucky.. those are the only two cases i've heard of from that breeder the only one i know of outside of that just has a hair problem but one of ours also has it (basically they are alot balder than they are supposed to they are devon Rex cats but these particular two look like sphynxes as opposed to rexes.. now the bald boy we have is from a different breeder than the other 3 but he's a sweetheart trough and trough.. kind of like a dog too since he will run to you as soon as you call)

      And her *only* puppy, too. Thankfully, the only experience I have with animal stillbirth was one kitten in a litter of three live births. My sister's cat had a surprise litter that she left with me for a bit. Then I heard my sister shout from upstairs. My sister and brother-in-law were watching TV when the cat walked right in front of them and seemingly started to poop. Then my sister realized the poop had a *face.*
      Yeah. My sister didn't want to deal with that and I'm much better at dealing with gross things than anyone else in the family. So I got a paper towel and helped the cat expel the incompletely formed body. Nasty, a bit sad, but had to be done. The remaining kittens got good homes.

And you never forget the really bad ones.
      I live in the country, and deal with the horrible deaths of unwanted pets who are tossed out here. Most die from attacks by farm watchdogs. When I had to put them down to end suffering, I'd be sick for days. Half the time, it was some poor pregnant pet they threw out to fend for herself.
