How to marble paper using the Suminagashi technique. Simply pour water into a tray and gently touch your inked paintbrush to the surface of the water to draw the ink out. Once you're satisfied with your design, lay a sheet of paper atop it and peel it away.
This is an activity for people of all ages - if working with small children, use disposable cake tins for a vat and pieces of yarn instead of paintbrushes.
For 'clear' ink, use a mixture of a drop of dish soap to a cup of water.
    Suminagashi inks used:

    Paper: 100% cotton works best
    Brushes:

You're welcome! I believe this tray was 16 x 20, maybe larger - it was at my job and they have lots that are all different sizes. It's a photo processing tray and you can pick them up from B&H Photo, eBay or Amazon.

Thanks for posting. Would love to explore it in my work. Do you know if it is archival if used on 100% cotton rag, i.e. does the ink contain acids that will eventually destroy the paper? Is it sumi ink or something different? Do you know the ingredients?

From time to time, I make a point to spend some time investigating something in which I have no active interest, just for the sake of seeing what's there. This is often very rewarding. Tonight, the topic was marbling, and I wound up here. I am now completely fascinated and am going to go out and buy what I need to do this tomorrow as soon as the shops open.
    Well done.

I teach a class for blind crafters at out local Center for Vision Loss. I'm going to figure out how to adapt this craft and I think the yarn technique will help a lot. When you talked about your breath moving the water I thought maybe chanting something or saying a prayer might be interesting to see how that infuses spirit into the art. Thank you for doing this!
