      My life has consisted of a long series of rooms like this - usually very small, like closets with a bed. Even my bedroom as a child was exactly like this. I slept in a small space beside the furnace of our house. There was just enough room to put in a single bed and little more. I always feel at home for some reason. When I have more space, I never know what to do with it all.

      Much later, I eventually figured that out. It's actually obvious, isn't it? Padang Besar=PBS. But I didn't know that at the time.
      And for some reason, I wasn't able to find Sungai Kolok on Google Maps. I can see it now. I must have made a mistake in my searches that day.
      But it's still far, far away from Padang Besar, isn't it? It confused me why one train would have two different cities as a destination. It can't go to both of them. But maybe the train separated into two parts at some point. One half went to Padang Besar and the other half went to Sungai Golok.

    Those fighter jets in 1:16:41 are most likely came from the Butterworth Air Base! In the north of the Butterworth train station, there is a large military air base that homes to the F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets, maybe it's a regular training or exercise for them on that day.

    Your comment about the boat operators on the river making it look easy reminded me of where I used to work....a cruise port but for me I was always amazed at the forklift operators moving items around to and from the shop dockside. • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  Před rokem

      That is definitely a maze. It's been like that for many years because of all the construction. I thought that by this time, it would all be finished. But the path from the train station to the ferry is still pretty complicated.
      Recently, I watched a bunch of videos from CZcamsrs that went to Penang, and I kept hoping one of them would show this long, complicated walk in their video and talk about it. But none of them did. Their videos just jump to them being on the ferry or at the ferry ticket window without showing how complicated it was to get there. 😅
      I can't help it but show everything.... It's all part of the story of getting to George Town.

    Hey Doug. Been watching your cycling in Malaysia last time and your gadget purchase in Midvalley. Also enjoying your search for the old design of the Casio watch in Jalan Pasar. Btw, I'm just wondering, how many kilos of your backpack with all the vlog equipment? Our style of travel is the same as using a backpack and vlogging.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  Před rokem +1

      Right now, I don't really know how much my backpack would weigh with my usual stuff plus the vlogging equipment. On this trip, I was just going from Mae Sot to Kuala Lumpur, and I decided to bring everything I had with me. I wasn't really travelling anywhere, so I didn't think it mattered if my backpack was unusually heavy.
      So, I brought all the stuff I had bought while in Thailand: a full set of queen-sized bed sheets and pillow cases; an electric kettle; household goods; etc. I also had a lot of duplicate camera gear and electronics and other things. So my backpack was extremely full, and it was probably twice as heavy as it would normally be. I tried to make it look easy in the video, but I could barely pick it up and put it on. It was hard to even walk and go up stairs because it was so heavy.
      My plan is to consolidate all my gear and make my load much, much smaller and lighter. However, it will still be heavy. I always travel with a lot of stuff anyway. It's just my style.

    The best bargain in Thailand is the 10 baht shower at Hua Lamphong, need your own towel though.
    What I find with the sleeper cars is to leave on the latest train possible as sitting with two people facing like that is uncomfortable and lots of time the later trains have the beds made when you get on.
    I enjoyed the video and was wondering if making so many videos where you're talking into the camera causes you to talk as you're walking around and not filming?

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  Před rokem +1

      I saw signs for some kind of shower in Hua Lamphong. And I really wanted to take advantage of that. But I wasn't sure if it was open or not. It looked to be closed, and I wasn't sure what I could do with my luggage while I was in there. It all seemed complicated, so I ended up just soaking my hand towel in the sink and sort of cooling off with that. A shower would have been nice, though.

    Late train departure ! - It is very unusual for 🚂trains to depart from its starting departure main Bangkok station late as there is usually enough time between the arrival of the train on the previous schedule (even if it came in late) and the next departure schedule, as the cleaning staff need time clean the couch cars, seats, toilets, etc.
    I enjoy taking the Hat Yai/Bangkok Special Express train with sleeping barth before the Covid 19 pandemic. There were once we arrived very very late in Bangkok Hua Lamphong railway station because many roads are closed even for train road crossing in Bangkok due to a cycling event, but we still arrived before the next departure schedule.
    From my many trips by train, I noticed many Thais will get off the train once the train arrived in the Bangkok Chatuchak area (North of Bangkok ! The railway actually go up farther north before turn down south possible due to the big Chao Phraya river) as the train will stop very often due to the many railway road crossing in Bangkok. I once have similar experience when taking the train from Ayutthaya. So the next time if you happen to take the train to Bangkok, do as the 🇹🇭Thais do👍🏽, get off early in Bangkok Chatuchak area.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  Před rokem

      I was wondering about that. My impression was that the trains in Thailand ran on time. I know people who took the trains in Thailand recently, and it seems like their trains always left right on schedule. They were never late.

      @PlanetDoug  Před rokem +1

      I don't mind when people ask about cameras and other gear. I love talking about that stuff. 😀 In fact, I usually can't find people who are as interested as I am. I bore people when I start talking to them about cameras.
      Quite often, when I watch CZcams videos from other people, I am like a detective as I try to figure out what kind of camera they have. I wait until they walk by a mirror or reflective window and pause the video so I can zoom in and try to make out the brand and model of camera and what kind of microphone they have. I love it when they put an equipment list in the video description.
      In a way, my equipment list isn't very helpful when you think about it. It lists ALL the gear that I have. But it doesn't specify which camera or lens I was actually using in specific videos. I should probably add that. 🙂

    Hi Doug do you know you can fly from Don maung airport Thailand, to Penang with Air Asia for 1050 Baht.Why put yourself through all that agro.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  Před rokem +2

      I thought about flying originally. It seemed to be the easiest option, and it didn't seem expensive. But my journey was starting from Mae Sot, not from Bangkok. So even if I flew Bangkok-Penang, I'd still have to get to Bangkok overland. And I figured that since I was already starting off by traveling overland, I might as well just keep going the whole way.
      And I thought it would be fun and interesting. There are a lot of challenges in that kind of trip. But it's also full of variety and you get to see a lot of new things and have a lot of new experiences along the way.
      I remember looking into how much it would cost on Air Asia, and I don't think I saw anything as cheap as 1,050 baht. I can't remember what the fares were back when I was looking, but I checked just now for a one-way flight in October/November, and the cheapest base fares are 1,900-2,200 baht. With taxes and standard luggage fees, it comes to 3,061 baht. And I was travelling with a LOT of extra luggage. It would have cost at least another 1,000 baht or more for excess luggage fees.
      On top of that, the flights I saw left at 7:30 in the morning, which would mean losing practically an entire night of sleep to get to the airport on time. And then likely the cost of a taxi to the airport on top of everything else plus a taxi/Grab from the Penang airport to Georgetown.
      With the train option, it was FAR cheaper. It left at a comfortable 3:10 in the afternoon, arriving at a good time in the afternoon. And I was able to sleep on the train and have a great time and simply walk and take ferry boats to get places. In the end, I think it was the right choice for me. I had a really good time. 🙂

    Train 37 goes all the way to Sungei Kolok on the east coast
    Train 45 goes to Padang Besar
    49:13 the train is running late than scheduled due to the contruction along the railway as they’re upgrading the tracks to double tracking.
    51:11 that station technically is on Malaysian part of the border, acts as a shared facility for both country. The thailand side station is approx 200meters further.

      @PlanetDoug  Před rokem

      Thanks. That makes perfect sense. At the time, my brain was too befuddled to realize that a train can actually go to two different places. It's not like a bus. A train can split up with some cars going to one city and other cars going somewhere else.
      I kept thinking that Train 37 and Train 45 were two different trains. And I didn't want to get on the wrong one. But in this case, I guess the two trains travelled as one unit for a while. And then, as you said, in Hatyai they split up. Makes perfect sense. 🙂

      If you are in public transports it's still mandatory. In buildings, it's up to the buildings' management. Outdoors up to you...

      I'm not fully up-to-date on the current rules. They keep changing. But as far as I know, you still have to wear a mask in public transportation. And all the shopping malls and restaurants and even outdoor markets I've visited still require masks to be worn.
      In any event, the vast majority of the local people are still wearing masks everywhere, even when walking down open streets. So I lean towards doing the same just to be polite and fit in and make people feel comfortable around me.

      @@PlanetDoug Interesting. At the risk of being guilty of stereotyping that comes across as being very Canadian. We've been travelling for 8 months across spain turkey malaysia indonesia malaysia(penang) bangkok and malaysia(kl again). In every case the moment the rules change we have left the mask in our pocket. In the sky train and lrt we stood out. In bangkok we often got the condo elevator to ourselves because locals fled in fear. chacon pour soi
