    11:54 😂 actually, that’s exactly the style of travel that I do! I’m not paying extortion places for a hotel room just to get up and fly back home the next day or spend all day flying in and then get to the hotel and go to sleep three hours later! if at all possible I will find a first thing in the morning flight or better yet a redeye flight and hopefully I will have slept on the plane. If not, I might catch a couple hours once I get to the hotel in the morning and then takeoff for my adventure. Similarly, I’m not going to waste a full day paying for the hotel just to fly back home

    Our family of four, including two kids, just returned from a five night stay. We drove from Florida. It took 14 hours to get there, but only 12 to get back. We stayed at a hotel that has a kitchen and free breakfast in Largo. They also had free dinner three nights a week, but we didn't partake as we got back too late.
    The nearest metro station was less than a mile. We could have walked, but we did enough walking sightseeing. We also could have taken a bus, but we drove and paid $8.95/day to park. I hear we should have been able to pay $4.95, but we didn't know how and didn't bother to ask. No big deal.
    We had already reserved to park at the zoo on the fourth day, so when we got to the Metro station to buy our cards, it offered us a 3 day unlimited pass for $10/person. Great deal since we didn't have to worry about putting money on each card. It probably worked out to be close to the what it would have cost anyway. It was a 20 minute metro ride to the mall.
    While at the mall, we tried using our SmarTrip card for the Circulator bus. It didn't work, but nobody's cards or money was being accepted, so they let us on anyway. This happened both times we rode.
    We brought our own lunches which we carried around in backpacks. The only food we paid for was coffees for the adults (bought at the Mall) and hot chocolate.
    I had already reserved the Zoo parking for $30. We could have saved money by taking Metro to the Zoo, but it wouldn't have saved that much, and it wasn't a bad drive to get there. We decided to drive from the Zoo to the Pentagon to visit the 9/11 Memorial and ate at the Shake Shack by the mall. This was the only meal we paid for.
    I think the hotel was around $1100 for five nights. $177 for transportation while there. And $70 for eating out and coffee. We went to Target to get easy food to make for dinner. Hotels in the city were more expensive and didn't include breakfasts and we'd have to pay more for food. And we'd still end up riding the metro and buses. It was more economical to stay in the suburbs near a metro stop.

    If you are flying into DCA I recommend the metro instead of a Taxi. The traffic can often be horrible around that airport and around downtown. I've flown in and out of DC a lot and I always take the metro. It's about $2.50-$3.00 a person one way and is about 30 mins? And then you already have your card for the time you are staying in DC.

      For a lot of travelers Metro is a great option. For a solo traveler it's easy and relatively fast. For a larger family the taxi might be better especially if there's a lot of luggage. If you're flying into Terminal A Metro is quite a hike (10-15 minute walk or a shuttle ride) so you'll want to factor that in as well.

      @@TripHacksDC Thanks for the reply. I'm normally in a party of 2-4, but we are all adults. I can see how it would be different with kids and luggage. I would see kids with their parents in the metro in the before times. Some kids really like trains.

      @TripHacksDC  Před 3 lety

      Yes! Generally more options when you're traveling group is all adults.

    My first DC trip cost me nothing. It was for a business meeting with a company located in Crystal City which lasted till friday at noon. I lied to my manager that the first possible flight back home was on saturday late evening, which got me 1,5 days to explore DC. Too short if you'd ask me, but I wouldn't be nitpicking.
