      Also, as a character design note, I like that the womens' hair color adds an extra hint of mystery as to which one is a blood related Dauterive:
      Rose and Bill have red/auburn hair.
      Violetta and Gilbert have dark brown hair.
      Lily has blonde, and Aunt Esme has (now grayed) former blonde or light brown hair.
      It makes it harder to guess until the very end.
      I like to think this was intentional, it's a fun detail.

  • @CountElvis
    @CountElvis Před 5 měsíci +274

    Gilbert refusing to allow Bill to sell the recipe makes sense when you consider the traditional mindset of the Southern aristocracy- they thought that commercialism was crass, "Yankee", and beneath them. That's why Binx's family is so disappointed in him being a stockbroker in The Moviegoer even as he makes good money- it was unbecoming of a Southerner. Basically, the Southern aristocracy wanted to be like European nobles and saw themselves as the inheritors of Greece and Rome. So a literary magazine was high culture and thus allowable while a sauce line was just crass commercialism.

    • @warwulf1889
      @warwulf1889 Před 5 měsíci +46

      Gilbert was a man living in the past. He was never willing to admit that the aristocracy of his family was long dead as nobody of his generation was actually upholding those traditions. I wouldn't even be surprised if he considered himself the only true dauterive left. Squirrel Tactics logic that the family had gotten into inbreeding makes sense when you remember that he called one of his relatives an imposter. Meaning he had very little regard for anyone not related by blood.

In just 4 seconds they show off every stereotype of gay.

    The reason Violetta likely wanted Bill is this weird phenomena. It’s when blood relatives have been long separated, are naturally attracted to one another. I think there was inbreeding with the Dauterives, so Violetta falls into that percentage of sexual attraction towards Bill.

    I think Bill was hedging his bets at the end.
    He passed it on to Bobby with 2 likely goals:
    1) If Gilbert died first, he could sell off the recipe without guilt because Gilbert is dead (and the family doesn't seem to care about the wishes of the dead)
    2) If Bill died first, he could leave Bobby the recipe and Gilbert couldn't do squat.
    It is rather funny that every angle looking at their conflict favors Bill selling the recipe. People still eat barbecue, but by 2007 (when the episode aired) print media was crumbling. The iPhone had just come out and eReaders were about to storm the market.

    The problem with Violetta, is the "D'Haute Rive" name and legacy was bound to the male heirs, the sons. It was a patriarchy type family. Women didn't count as passing on the name and blood of the family. Even if Violetta convinced her man to take on the family name, he would not be of the D'Haute Rive bloodline, and thus would not count either, by their family's tradition. It must be through blood and breeding of a son.

    I think Gilbert had no clue to what the recipe entails, as Bill is an incredible chef, and this led to Gilbert feel that his "snooty" pamphlet was threatened as it would be upstaged by the sauce. And Gilbert couldn't live with "his" project being dependent on Bill. Bill's circumvention of his honoring family with Bobby is delicious though! Bill is Bill, just too sad and easily manipulated. I'd like to see Bobby sell the sauce and name it Bill'N'Bobs, to honor that. Bobby setting aside some of that money it makes and surprising Bill one day when he really needs it.

    When it comes to his first appearance, I liked that he basically stood out in so many ways, even if it was harassing the other male characters. Not surprisingly enough, you are right that our gallery thing I think I mentioned this in another comment and one of your other videos about Gilbert but he literally doesn’t realize that what he’s doing for gallery crap is not gonna work or last long. Selling barbecue sauce could make you a legend even if you can’t pass it on to your own blood or don’t have any relatives remaining you could still pass it on. Your legacy could be forever remembered. I found him absolutely selfish in, not telling his own cousin about selling the estate. Part of me believes he may have murdered off his own mother, along with his sister and those other widows, who living with him. But either way, I can’t be sure. This character by the time he made a second appearance. Yeah I almost was like you don’t need this guy’s permission. He’s an idiot let him to send into his own madness. In fact, what I think would’ve been much more nicer in the episode as if someone did like American dad, Stan Smith did where he snaps his finger, pretending that no one’s around him That’s what Gilbert deserves. I mean Bill was willing to basically share, but the guy doesn’t agree with allowing this whole entire idea of steak sauce, becoming a big thing for their family name and steady just gives us the most disturbing response by saying when you die alone on your deathbed. That right there is where he deserved to have his ass kicked. It would’ve been much nicer if Hank just kicked his ass. Or at least snapped his finger making it look like he wasn’t there. Bill could’ve developed a little more of a character arc right there but he decided not to but then again Bill is an idiot. As much as I know Dale’s dad was in the closet. I’m surprised that nobody’s even talked about Gilbert being a homosexual. The reason I say that is because the way he talks the way he acts, and he’s in interaction with his sister and no sort of attraction whatsoever with any other women has pretty much become clear to me. I feel like this character could’ve been liked if we got a little more detail, but I don’t think we really did and I feel like the writers should be blamed for this. But that’s what happens when Mike Judge the creator of the show doesn’t get involved too much in defending characters reputations
