ACCRA VS ABUJA: CITY COMPARISON 2022. (KENYAN Opinion)

In this video we do a side-by-side comparison of Accra and Abuja. Both of these cities are in West Africa and are the capital cities of Ghana and Nigeria respectively. We will compare these cities based on five metrics which are: The Cost of Living, Access to Social Amenities, Infrastructural Development and Access to Leisure Activities and at the end of this video I will reveal which city is more livable. I hope this information will come in handy for prospective visitors and the residents of these cities. Before we start kindly remember to like this video. That’s all I’m asking for guys. Alright, lets roll.
    1. Infrastructural Development.
So which skyline is more beautiful? I will commend both cities for having very nice modern skylines full of glitzy modern skyscrapers. Accra, the capital city of Ghana is growing with massive infrastructure projects executed by the government. Whereas Abuja is the first city ever planned by any West African country. However, on closer examination you will notice that Abuja for sure looks more organized than Accra. It has wider and cleaner roads and there are no unsightly shacks along the streets. For this one I have to give it to Abuja.
    2. Quality of Life.
As far as this parameter goes, we will consider data that I got from versus.com which is a site that ranks cities based on raw data. Let’s look at Abuja first and where it excels at. Abuja has a bigger economy overall at a GDP of % billion dollars, 2 billion larger than Accra. This means that there are better economic prospects in Abuja compared to Accra. Abuja is also safer with a lower 15.7 per 100000 murder rate. It is also cheaper to drive around in Abuja due to lower fuel prices at 0.53 dollars lower than Accra. Purchasing power of Abuja is also higher than Accra with lower food prices, all thanks to a stronger economy.
Let’s now turn to Accra and its positives. Accra boasts of a lower unemployment rate at a marginal 0.8 %. The average salary in Accra is also higher at 230 dollars more. It is also cheaper to rent an apartment in Accra. In fact, it costs twice the amount to rent in Abuja than in Accra. That’s definitely a huge plus for Accra. Access to University is also better in Accra due to the fifteen universities compared to only 3 for Abuja. Accra also has a better developed healthcare system with more bed capacity.
My final verdict is that Accra wins on this one mainly due to the cheaper rents and higher income for residents of Accra.
    3. Access to Basic Amenities.
Water is essential for life. As afar as supply of this precious commodity Accra is faring much better than Abuja, which is plagued by irregular and inequitable supply of water. This might be linked to a higher population density in Abuja. Ironically Abuja boasts of a better sanitation system than Accra. It is generally cleaner, inaccessibility of water notwithstanding.
Ghana has 94 % electricity coverage compared to 83% for Nigeria. This disparity is further manifested to their capital cities. Accra is definitely faring well in this regard. Abuja may be an organized capital but it suffers from frequent electricity cuts and blackouts.
    4. Access to Leisure Activities.
Accra is a sea side city. Abuja is located deep inland though there is a man-made lake around. This means that beach goers will find Accra more fun due to availability of water and beath fun activities. Accra also has a UNESCO world heritage site while Abuja doesn’t have any. However, Abuja has more well organized and well-maintained public parks like the Millenium Park. Its natural beauty is also evident. Visitors will find Abuja easier to navigate due to a better road network and the absence of traffic jams. In terms of nightlife and entertainment - I give it to Accra! It has much better restaurants, bars, nightclubs, hotels. Accommodation is twice cheaper in Accra hence you will get more value for your money in an Accra hotel. I feel Accra deserves the win for this one.
So, what is my final verdict? I feel these two West African Cities have a lot in common and they excel in many areas. But every contest has a winner. Based on the metrics discussed I feel Accra is the more livable city. Abuja may be clean and organized but you will have to dig deep into your pockets to live there. It is cheaper to live in Accra, it’s more fun and you get more value for your money. Plus, Ghanaian Jollof rice is much more delicious than the Nigerian one. I know Nigerians will get mad for this but it is what it is. Accra takes the day.

Another ignorant Kenyan! Contrary to your misleading comments, Abuja city is serviced by FCT Water Board. Apart from the city, satellite towns like Nyanya, Karu, Kubwa, Bwari, etc have running taps. Besides, Abuja has a BRT system though not as efficient as that of Lagos. Unlike Accra, Abuja has a light rail. You can ride from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to the city centre on the train. The cost of living in Abuja is far cheaper than what is obtainable in Accra. You can't do a comparative analysis without visiting both cities and taking surveys (not opinions on Wikipedia and other questionable sources).

All your campaigns to discourage visitors coming to Nigeria isn't working.....when are you guys going to learn that this will never work?
Always, when visitors come into Nigeria, they always regret why they hadn't come in Sooner, all these would always make Nigeria bigger. Have you lived in Abuja before. It is a known fact that cost of living in Accra is higher than anywhere in West Africa, it is also known that accommodation and real estate in Accra is more expensive than anywhere in west Africa, in Nigeria, water is provided by individuals mostly through the drilling of borehole.....there's no where in Abuja that lack access to water for domestic consumption. For the low income earners, there are public borehole for them to use all over. As for the health care, do you have any idea on how Abuja is planned? It is planned by districts and every single district have both privates and public health facilities to cater for as many people as possible, Abuja lack no basic amenities, I can only fault it for one thing, that is inadequate Busses, even with that, a cost of taxi fare (uber/ bolt) is so cheap that an average person wouldn't mind taking them. I've lived in Abuja, I have a house there and as an average commuter I can tell you this with facts.

Which life expectancy is 69 in Ghana or Accra only? You have forgotten that Abuja is just a new capital city in the making, and still developing vibrantly with the best infrastructures to become the best city ever in west Africa over two decades now , compared to Accra a glorified town , smaller in landmass than Abuja , small and cramped road network , traffic and shanty environment within it, since 1957, , only few places within it is just to compare with little of what you can find better and bigger in Abuja , all district in Abuja has both private and public health care modem facilities that caters for both the rich and locals, electricity has been structured to suit the city, even as beautiful and well organised, it is still a work in progress, Ghana since 1957 as a whole is still a joke compared to Abuja, Lagos, Enugu etc. if Accra boasts of electricity, it should have been the best in Africa, but the irony and lies hyping little infrastructure in their city Accra . Go to Abuja, you will never believe you are in Nigeria capital city and still growing vibrantly. This Kenyan CZcamsr is out from his village.in Kenya , majority of the businesses and structures are owned by foreigners, where as in Abuja the majority of owners of structures and facilities are hard working Nigerians and we are proud of that, major stakeholders are vibrant Nigerians .
