Oklahoma Route 66 Sidewalk highway from Afton to Miami

- Travel the entire remaining alignment of Route 66 Sidewalk highway; a section of road that was constructed 9 feet wide with concrete curbing. Due to budget constraints at the time of construction, the road builders were forced with the decision to either make the road full width for half the distance, or go the full distance and make the road half the width. Guess which option they chose.
I’m watching this 7 yrs later so who knows how much is left. I love watching these videos and following along on google maps.
I just wish I was sitting in the passenger seat while you were filming, I would absorb that like a sponge. I love 66 and Thanks Richard!

We owned a house just off of Route 66 in Tulsa near 11th St and 129th. So many things just around the house that made my drive to work a little more interesting. I loved living that close to the Mother Road.

Before they decommissioned the 66, i took a trip from tulsa to oklahoma city....it was awesome, stopped in all the small towns, even the old gas stations were still up, i mean the buildings. Many were more like homes, because people built theirs home on to their businesses.

I don't know if I was on the sidewalk hwy in the '50's, but I remember there was a curb on the edge of the hwy. that if you hit it, it would "throw" you back onto the road, you would not leave the hwy. This was Rt. 66 thru Okla. It was concrete, cracks filled with black tar/oil. The only road I remember that had this curb. It had a 45 degree angle; years were '52 onward.
not the sidewalk highway. What you speak of still exists nearly in its entirety through Oklahoma. The sidewalk highway was only 66 briefly.
Nice video. I went from Springfield to the midway point and it was something memorable. Soon I want to take the whole route from start to finish.

My wife and I got married in Miami in 2010 and drove that section from Miami to US 69. Cool piece of history. Got some pics of us on it. It was pretty rough in spots even then. Cool vids Rich. Love em, keep puttin em out.

I seem to remember a small section of this in Foyil, Oklahoma as well. It wasn’t nearly as rough as this.
The section in Foyil is old but not this narrow. It's still the original pavement but approximately 18' Wide.
I found that out when I did a little research after I had made the comment. 😁 Talk about sticking my foot in my mouth. 😂
My wife and I just drove over the Sidewalk highway section between Miami and US 69 going into Afton this past weekend (July 27, 2014). As you leave Miami on 125 and turn onto the Sidewalk highway the road is really rough. It is like driving over a washboard. That may be due to a grader blade digging into the pavement. Going west from Miami the first six to seven miles is more or less gravel with just spots of pavement showing every now and then. As you get closer to highway 69 more pavement is visible and the road gets a little smoother. I am glad I got a chance to drive on it before it is all gone. There is now a marker sign at the turn off from highway 69. Thanks for posting the video.

LIkewise my thanks for the video. I grew up on Hiway 66 (our house was two doors east of the Rocket/Hair Teazer. The big white two-story house across from the Rocket belonged to a couple named Rose; they operated essentially a motel in their house. Looks like the two houses next to it are gone; the second (which was directly across the hiway from us belonged to the Dentons. Mrs.Denton was the mother of Cliff and Clint Baker, and she and I had the same birthday. Seems to me that next door (heading on toward Miam) was the home of Cliff Baker, who had that small eatery there on the same block with Bassett's grocery.
Out o Aftom when you pull of the highway to the right,you are going east. When you go around the curve that turns to you left,at the monument,you are going north.
they need 2 preserve our past 4 the future!

I drove the section you covered in the second half of the video earlier today. I didn't even know there was more to it between Afton and where I got on. I took off driving from just about 5 miles east of Springfield, Missouri this morning and followed Route 66 all the way down to Narcissa, Oklahoma, occasionally taking stops for photos, and then turned around to head home. I discovered the sidewalk section on my way back and took that back to Miami.

@pedrof830 - Its just how they "maintain" roads in the country. They don't have a lot of money. I think they should preserve a large section of the existing road by building an offshoot to go around it. Then a kiosk or picnic area could be placed there.

Nice work! - Especially with the little Mavick. Ironically, that bridge you were on (Eads Bridge) is pretty much the only bridge that was NOT used as Route 66 to cross from Illinois to Missouri. All the other bridges crossing from IL to MO were designated 66 (with the exception of the Stand Musial bridge c2015).
Roamin' Rich OK was looking for the name of that bridge.
This video you did is pretty cool. I went to google earth and looked at it from above, and you can tell where the bridge was, and the road that curved around. I followed the line of trees to where e 220 is. You're right, this is sad to see such a historic road get shred to pieces, and or paved over. I just wonder where anyone's sense of history went too. At least I could go back a few years and see the difference.

I've been on the sidewalk highway in 2004, 2013, and 2015 when my wife and I got married in Miami. Wish at least a part of it would be preserved.

States aren't broke; they just lead you to believe they are. Look into CAFR accounts; two sets of books. Budgets are an illusion and you are right they seem to have "money" available for worthless items but something like the sidewalk highway, well? Thank you for the compassion you have for Hwy 66. We in America seem to loose our sense of where we came from. Good video.

Do you prefer that the roads stay the same or do you favor some kind of effort to "refresh" the old buildings and like you said, put some picnic benches and public facilities for the travelers to enjoy, ?
@Roamin roach please do the old us 380 between carrizozo new mexico and San Antonio nm. The old route merely is side by side of existing and mostly not visible unless in air as you can see the old route 2 lane and part of it was buried under thr lava fields by existing modern 380. Google earth can show. Part of it where it split off is still accessible for land owners off the old 380. The rest past the entrance toward San Antonio is non drivable anymore. But it's good history. A lot of bad accidents occurred on thr old 380 stretch that winds mostly head on with casualties. A bit actually. In carrizozo the old 54 cut through downtown toward 380 but now is a dead local road in old downtown. The existing has been redone few times paved over utilities replaced which goes up past court house on current north 54 route.
Also prior to 380 the old old route from carrizozo to San Antonio nm was north of the lava fields. Contact me if you wish to do this as I can point you on accessible areas and the old road road prior to 380 (old and realigned) existing .

the bankhead highway was the some way in parts. 9ft wide concrete.

I just did a 66 trip in Sept 2015. the road was hard to stay on as a lot of it is covered with gravel now.

I was lucky enough to drive this section in 2005. it was still bitumen then
You passed right by my grandparents land! I will say by driving that road every weekend it's a terrible pain on the people living out there having to deal with driving on that road every day. I live on another section of 66 in western ok and I find myself driving 8 miles out of the way every day just to avoid driving on it.
Think about all the money tourism pours into the area as a result of those roads. I sure wish they would just make another road beside the old sidewalk highway.
Roamin' Rich, I love this video, but I do want to point out a few things. In your video, you talk about the graders tearing up the road and putting gravel down and locals not realizing what they have here. Locals do realize what they have but the county and the state are on a limited budget especially due to our state legislature giving out tax breaks to big companies and due to the legislature lowering the state's tax base. It is cheaper to use gravel and grade the road then it would to repair the concrete or lay asphalt there. Also, you suggest they build a new road next to the old Route 66. That would require huge of amounts of money. Not only would the new road and materials costs a lot of money but buying the land out from the locals would also require a huge amount of money. Now if you out-of-staters would want to start dumping large amounts of money into the project then maybe the county and state would consider the project.
Regardless of any scenario, grader blades are destroying a historical landmark. I understand pavement very well as it's my trade. Yes, putting in a new road wouldn't be cheap. Honestly they could simply widen one side of the road and add gravel and a drainage ditch. - That would give people a clear lane to drive on. Whoever decided to widen both sides of the road wasn't thinking very clearly. They should have steered to one side or the other and left the pavement to itself. Maintaining it is probably a little more labor intensive than they want to take on. It wouldn't have been very hard to make repairs to the road itself while grading the gravel road next to the pavement. It's too late for that now. Most of the road has been beaten beyond recognition. I think they are just taking the easy way out by putting the blade to it. I would bet that the people working on that section of road would rather the historic pavement would just go away so their job would be easier.
I don't know if you know about Oklahoma's budget situation right now, but Oklahoma has a $611 million shortfall so the state can't afford to buy some land of landowners in order to widen what is now a county road. And I doubt Route 66 enthusiasts could raise enough money to save it.
Seems as though every state is broke these days.... some how they have money to pay for less practical things though.
Looking at all those potholes and given the cost of asphalt to rural areas, it's no wonder they opted to gravel over it. If I had to live on that road, I'd want graded gravel too knowing they couldn't afford to repave it.
What camera are you using on your dashboard for this?
If you think this is bad..............try finding "The Mason/Dixon Line"............or what's left of it.

Between the cement curbs. Was,& still is originally,red bricks. Those where paved over.
Nope. No red bricks. Not here. It's concrete underneath. I've seen plenty of sections with missing asphalt.

The Afton DX station no longer houses the small collection of Packard cars. They have, unfortunately, been sold off.
After the memorial sign, you say your heading East, but your heading West, North of Afton.
On Google Street Map you can see they put up a monument where you turned at 9:40 GPS 36.81560, -94.92712
Thanks fo posting this great video, do you know why they keep throwing gravel on top of the original concrete? I don't believe they want to close this hwy, with the overpass and all it'd be pointless!

Seems to me the road is being deliberately destroyed and the aggregate that is being put down will be used as a new base layer for new tarmacadam.
