First caught these guys on Pandora 15ish years ago and was immediately blown away and was an instant fan. I really have an affinity for this album, it just pushed all the right buttons for me.
I really need to start using Pandora again. Pelican is a bright, shiny gem among many and I'll forever be grateful for the development and success of Pandora.
Hey I'm right there with you. The first time I heard Pelican was around 2008ish. I still come back to this album every couple years too.
They're experts at "get lost in the jam session" music. Even though it seems abstract it retains structure and every change sounds perfectly timed.
Thank you. I agree 100%
I searched up pelicans since I like the bird, saw this come up, clicked on it. I don't regret it at all!
Same happend to me!
I lose sleep over how awesome this album is.
Duke Carden calm down it good but it’s not out of this world good.
@@lazarusvillagomez Calm down. You don't get to decide for other people ehat they should find to be "out of this world".
i guess im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot my password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Angel Parker instablaster :)
How's life treating you Duke?
The first 5 minutes of this album caused my head to bang more than 100% of the shit on the radio in the last 5 years.
true
Jim Layhe good music isnt on the radio no matter whst genre

pasuglez Thank you and blessings.
Rakkasan
Right on! Thank you so much
Bliss in Concrete is the fore runner for Night Time Stories.
At nine minutes into the album, that transition is FUCKING WICKED.
I love the drumming on this album! Certainly is unusual but I guess that's why I enjoy it!
This band has his own style and is unique !! Beautifull !!
Far from Fields is one of the most joyous pieces of music I've ever heard.
Gawd damn right. ♥️
This album brings back too many memories. Always on my playlist, especially Spaceship Broken...
Click-heads are complaining... free tempo makes this alive.
never thought i would be called a click-head for... *checks notes*... thinking a drummer should be able to sustain a groove

@@Joebyron72 lol all these years later and people are still arguing about this? The dude couldn't keep a beat, get over it
Pelican is dope.. Like my old habit
Is this a joke about smoking Pot? If so it's pretty funny.
I think this is my favorite Pelican album. What We All Come to Need used to be, but this is such a good mix between their sloppy stoner metal (The Fire in Our Threats Beckon the Thaw, which is great, and their clean and polished stuff What We All Come to Need and Forever Becoming), it's the perfect mix of heavy an mean and feel good.
The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw I would personally not classify as any sort of stoner metal. Only March to the Sea has that feel. It's very much a post-rock album.
been a death metal listener my whole life this kind of stuff is what im heading towards lately for a little change when I need something different like post rock kinda shit this shits like good work music
john larose get into system of a down man, not just their popular songs
You listen to Torche and Floor? Highly recommend.
@@Vivian-bk4nd very very true
Way to go man. Me as well. I'm also a death \m/etal fan.
I recommend Tool, OAR, Dave Mathews band, The Gorillaz, Modest Mouse, Red Hot chili peppers, Nirvana, Alice in Chains.
Those are also great for smoking grass.
I'm an all metal fan, except for stuff like infant annihilator that's just retarded.
This album brings back so many memories.
Wtf are you talking about, his drumming is spot on.
Holy shit balls I am in LOVE with this album
The best Pelican album
fuck yeah period
keeps me in balance
I hear a Kyuss influence....I like it...GREAT Band!
really? I'm hearing Smashing Pumpkins in this a LOT. E.g. riffs from 1:35 remind me so much of "Bodies"... which is a very good thing :)
There's a lot in here...some Floyd, GSY!BE and Sabbath-regardless good stuff!
+Cigol Zelev (2 plus year old comment thread, I know) I'm hearing a LOT of early Explosions in the Sky too, mostly with the melodic, happy sounding tracks on here. I mean it's good stuff, but I prefer the darker stuff Pelican does on this album, and in general.
if you wanna hear some post-metal bands with stoner influence: Across Tundras
If someone complains a about the timming, it’s that they don’t get what the is trying to do at all!! It’s so obvious that this is MADE THIS WAY, theres no bad playing or mistake on the timming, this is suposed to be this way. Come on you guys, this is to just to hear as music, this an expression, this is something artistic. Hear this as you would do the melvins first records, sonic youth first weirder stuff, the weirdest shoegaze that you could imagine. This has some stoner in it? Fuck yeah it does. This is what you feel when your mind is random and freely flying and enjoying different states of whatever tha fuck might be going with you after eating some mushrooms.
And we are not even the biggest Pelican fans, but, we just don’t how some of you don’t get the point of this when It’s so god damned obvious.
Thank you. You get it
If you stare at this album cover long enough, the seaweed starts moving.
Damn discovered them a few days ago...Can't believe that I didn't know them for so long....
Great album to do you homework with :)
Wow i havent listen to pelican in many years and " far from field " gave me goosebumps
This is so beautiful.....
Heavy. Thankfully. These guys are proper post metal. Love it!
Nice band ... always nice to listening and just relax
One of those bands I decided going to see live was necessary, especially if Big Business opens in some
been waiting for someone to upload this one
love the tunes so much
THAT'S WHAT I NEEDED !!! THX !!!
So the song Dead Between the Walls showed up on my Pandora feed and I've been digging it for a couple of months. This album is sick!
pandora introduced me to thesr guys long ago as well. started out with stuff like helmet, tool, soundgarden, queens of the stone age, and pandora took what i liked of that and turned me into a post-metal and sludge/doom fiend
John Berry Pandora is amazing for that specific reason. but yeah these guys are great I've been listening to them since around yth grade I believe
Agreed, I have been a thrash metal fan since High school in the 80's and have slowly drifted to a more doom / desert rock. recently.
John Berry thanks to pandora? its so great really. i started with tool and queens of the stone age as seeds when i was 12 yo and it took a few years but made my way eventually to this cool af stuff.
Psyfonify Pandora didn't start it for me, I stumbled on to QotSA an Kyuss around 2001 - 2003 and was a heavy user of Lyco Rhapsody in those days, very similar algorithms to Pandora. Really expanded my taste in music.
thank you good sir
Written with the heart !
Its pretty amazing...
Some of the best metal has come from that sub-genre
Dead Between the Walls is great. It references Shortest Straw as well.
Its so awesome
flippin well good and stuff!
Yes.......great :)
Thrilling.
Thank you Pandora!
what with "pandora" can you explain, please?
I am lost in this world, my destination: City of Echoes.
First time listening to this band. Awesome stuff. I had a brief image of theses backbones/fronds moving slowly but also fading in and out, as well as the album title on top fading in and out. Wish I had the expertise to make that happen.
The band as a whole makes you feel and think musucal concepts, all of them related to states of mind. 34:15, seems to be talking of something deeply personal (joy, sadness, ??), but at the same time seems to to be telling a story of all of us.
great to write !
Their sound is very raw, it's nice
I was listening to this for the first time and I'm thinking to myself the drums are what stuck out to me.....in a very good way...and after about 30 minutes or so of listening I start to scroll down and read the comments to figure out who the hell these guys are and everyone is completely slamming the drummer......I guess either I don't know shit about good music or I'm just tone deaf........
No. You're not tone deaf. This is great music
awesome
I've known them before, but today, Dead Space brought me here :D
That drumming though!!
The drums rule. Ginger Baker, Charlie Watts, Mick Fleetwood. Against the grain .Jazz drummers all. Thats exactly what makes this interesting to listen to, especially as an instrumental act
Epic album! \m/
I still like to think of these guys as happy Godflesh.
Wicked band!
excelente!
i love this album. thisi is song. pelican!
First time hearing this band and I like what I'm hearing.
very very good
I saw them in Vancouver during this tour run. They made the groud floor panels vibrate like an earthquake
I was looking for a band called Pelican City, this is cool too
nice!
This reminds of a lot of what I hear in the Japanese metal scene
I learned of pelican from dead space 3. I love pelican.
Thanks, reminds me of at the drive in and the mars volta..ish
It's the post-hardcore riffing
PELICAN.
YES
schweet!
It's unfortunate that people are so used to the metronome beats they hear in most popular music, that they're unable to enjoy music where tempo is less than completely static.
Composition-wise, this is quite progressive stuff, and sticking to one time and one tempo at all times would definitely kill the flow. The least interesting parts on this albums are those where the beat is completely even.
Johannes Katajamäki actually I found they do very interesting things with steady beats. Especially on Forever Becoming. But overall their albums are always sick.
What ? U confused me - 🤚👀✌️
Sorey, eh? Didn't even have time to Psych.101 it to DE💀TH, bc i went somewhere else, mmmmmk? I'm back now tho. Less = More & it's NOT about the notes, it's the gaps between the pulses. 💚👽🛸👀🔮😱😉👻☯️🌋🎶🥁⌛😎👍
@@thathandleistakentrythisone not on this album though this is almost a showcase for drumming imo both amazing albums though, my two favorites
Changing tempo is one thing. Being sloppy is what people are hearing here
black, brown, white, yellow, red, and all the colors in between.
Well, this is fucking sick. I'll drink to this.
yeaaaah
there best album to this day!
"Their", not "there" ffs.
it really is.
Yes
The part around 16:55 where the guitar cascades down the scale sounds a bit like "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf: "If I have to spend another minute with you I don't know if I can survive." I like to think that this is Meatloaf's character's son experiencing the exact same thing.
a lot of people complain about the drummer, the Rolling Stones drummer was known for his clumsy almost stumbling kind of drumming. pelicans drummer isnt that but he has a drive to him that i rally dig, i dont know im not a drummer im a guitarist just saying what i hear and think
jesus leyva I think the people complaining don't realize this is they style of drumming that fits and works in post metal and post rock. I personally love this style of drumming. This and Isis's drummer. The Pelican drummer does get better each album.
We should make a new genre called Wholesome Metal.
Just bumped into this tonight.....what the fuck rock have I been under? "killer!" ")
MARKERS, MARKERS EVERYWHERE!!!
Personal one for me
one of the first songs I learned to play I guitar
which one?
Rush... the beginning is so, so Rush... like it! one should always try to copy the best, and then add is on flavour. It would be terrible if I was listening to a prog album saying: oh, this is so Beyonce...
Kepp on Rockin'
I dont know why, but the phrase "this is son beyonce" under pelican album made me laugh hard
It is...
Sexy progressive sounds, I love it. :D
18:40 nice song
Fuck yes!!!!!!
it´s just the tides of time, california, utah, nevada, arizona, and all the others will be painted brown...
So.
Fuckin'.
Good.
Always looking for some music that can rival the magic that Isis brought.... this material is fantastic, but I wish the production were a little better. The drummer doesn't seem to be the tightest player, either. But I like how this material develops.
Another good band to listen to is Russian Circles
Gumbo72203 Their drummer gets better in each album. You might like him better in their later stuff. Of course if you want the more drone type stuff, I recommend their previous The Fire in Our Throats Beckon The Thaw, it's closer to Isis.
+Gumbo72203 I never could tell what was off about the drums, but that's gotta be it. Thanks for the insight.
+Gumbo72203 You've gotta admit though this guy has a phenomenal pocket.
Neurosis started it all go to them
I like the opening to this album very much. It's a good calm atmosphere. Immediately after that, it gets a bit lame, I think; not considering the remainder of the album. Does anyone else here feel the same way? I wasn't sure when this album came out; 2007, according to Wikipedia. I thought maybe this was an immature album, but March to the Sea is my favorite of their tracks and it came out two years prior. Listening again, I hear the same repetition (repeate a riff four times before moving on) in March to the Sea that I consider lame here, but it sounds better there. Maybe just better choice of riffs.
Not quite a pointed critique, but I wanted to throw it out there. Pelican is an excellent band. I wish I had seen them live when I was going to metal concerts regularly.
I don't have a vast knowledge of this style of music, but i remember getting bored fast when listening to it. This time was different, i enjoyed the whole album. I get what you say about 'getting lame' but idk, this has it's moments. Maybe if you play it in the background while doing some homework.
The drummer hate comments are from an instrument-elitist, entirely unnecessary. Raw, or primitive sound of the drums only add to the music in this case, it gives it a garage, punk sound, and if it weren't for that or the similar effect of the bass, this would in many ways seem like any sludge metal album without vocals. Without this, it would have been far too sterile, it would sound more hectic than massive. In terms of those aspects, this album casts a shadow on the other pelican albums. That being said, I can respect and enjoy them for their particular qualities.
Exactly
40:26
Is that an error on the upload or ?
W
1.25 speed completely gives it a new, MDMA-like, rolling, hard, speedcore-like, shitting all over slipknot vibe to it.
What sort of idiot listens to an record as beautiful as this and says 'I dont like the tempo'?
the smug idiot
Weirdos with cat pictures.
Not quite my tempo
I've noticed weird tempo variations on the begining of the album. A lot of my favourite records have tempo variations but here it sounds strange... not musical. By the way, it's a really great album in other respects (sorry for my bad english).
You English is better than many native English speakers :-)
It's trickier to change tempo than it is to switch timing
okeeeeeeeeeey... xD
I want to buy this but it's extremely expensive on Amazon, what the hell. I also own their first 2 albums.
