  • Ancestral Soil
When I was a child this was my home
The only place I could call my own
After all these years, how the time has flown
And I return to walk again this old dirt road
Tho this whole world has drastically changed
But these creeks, hills and valleys remain the same
I reflect on my raising, now that I have aged
And I long to return to those long ago days
Once upon a time, I couldn’t wait to go
Thinking I belonged out there, on my own
But as time marches on, it is now that I know
Tho I’ve traveled many places, there’s just no place like home
It is here I find peace and happy memories
Playing in Granny’s yard, hearing birds in the trees
I can still smell the biscuits, taste the warm gravy
I recall walking to church on Sunday morning
It is on this creek I can recapture my soul
Regain my strength and be made truly whole
And on some distant day, I’ll return once more
To be laid to rest in my ancestral soil
