When I was researching my book “the Spaghetti Tree” in 2007 , about the Italians in london, it was suggested to me that Anna Maria had an affair during the 1960s with one of the most famous london Italian restaurateurs.

The narrator asked the question if her life would have been different and better had she chosen to be with James Dean. Based on a Hollywood history perspective the answer is no, probably not. She was in the wrong place to have a satisfying life. She had a very low probability of meeting her “soulmate”.. she would probably have had better chance away from Hollywood, maybe closer to her sister or mother. Just my humble opinion.

Her face radiates wholesomeness. The personal life of anyone usually affects their work in some ways. Innocence needs to be protected. The movie industry can be just too hard on a person's spiritual life. She was one of a kind. Thanks for sharing this! USA
What an absolute angel of a beauty she was. It’s a shame that although talented, beautiful and charismatic, the Hollywood machine was not suited to her personality, and it contributed to her illnesses and her way too early death. RIP Pier.
What a face! Classic beauty. Hollywood is such a cruel master though. It chews you up and spits you out. Too bad for her sons that their mother died so young.
She and her sister, Marisa Pavan, were stunning in a heart-breaking way.
Her twin sister Maria Luisa Pierangeli, (known professionally as Marisa Pavin) died in France on Dec 6, 2023 and lived until she was 91. (19 June 1932 - 6 Dec 2023) She found happiness in her marriage, divorce, and remarriage to French actor Jean Pierre Aumont (5 Jan 1911 - 30 Jan 2001). During her acting career she received an Academy Award nomination and won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in the 1955 film The Rose Tattoo. They had two boys.
I was a hugh fan. She was a terrific actress. RIP! Died too soon. Blessings and prayers to her family!

According to Wikipedia, "In September 1971, at the age of 39, Angeli was found dead of a barbiturate overdose at her home in Beverly Hills. On the day of her death, Angeli was given an injection of Compazine by her doctor. Consequent death due to anaphylaxis has been suggested, however, it is not supported by the findings of her autopsy."

Pier Angeli clearly had the potential to be a superstar, but the Hollywood studios failed to appreciate the talent they had on hand, in her acting ability, and little-girl-lost looks. The studio support system had broken down in the early 1950s.
Shame that she died in 1971 of a severe allergy to a tranquilizer, and just 39. Octaman was inane scriptwise and unsubtle: an undeserving end to her otherwise sparkling career. (I've seen better black and white horror B-movies than this.) Had she not broken off her romance with James Dean, she just might have married him, even though he was a rebel. Who can say for sure?

Kirk Douglas claims in his autobiography that he was engaged to Angeli but seemed to be frustrated in spending any time with her largely because of her mother.
James Dean had to break it off with her for the same reason. Her mother disapproved of Dean.

Sardinia is a very traditional place even today. I can only imagine how a Sardinian mother of the 50s could consider a daughter, showing off on the big screen, especially in a place like Hollywood, and the men she was dating.
Her mom needed to mind her own business when it came to her "grown up" daughter. Who she was with was really none of her business but pierre was trapped, very sad.

Was Pier Angeli not marred to Vic Damone? I believe her sister Marisa was married to a French actor named Jean Pierre Aumont. Perhaps Pier's mother knew of the reputation of Kirk Douglas as a "womanizer" and as a Catholic Italian mother didn't want Pier's heart to be broken nor her reputation ruined.
I imagine (not sure) that her sweet girl image might have become less popular after the 1950s and early 60s. I remember Pier Angeli most from SILVER CHALICE. After the mid-1950s, that kind of image gave way to edgy personality types and images.

Funny you should ask that question ! Yes ! Yes ! Yes ! I think many good things could have happened to both of them if they were allowed to get married. They were both drawn to each other and very very compatible, not to mention physical attraction! They would have great together, and I think the way their lives ended would have been the complete opposite.
