कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः ।
धर्मे नष्टे कुलं कृत्स्नमधर्मोऽभिभवत्युत ॥ ३९ ॥
kula-kṣaye praṇaśyanti
kula-dharmāḥ sanātanāḥ
dharme naṣṭe kulaṁ kṛtsnam
adharmo ’bhibhavaty uta
Synonyms
kula-kṣaye - in destroying the family; praṇaśyanti - become vanquished; kula-dharmāḥ - the family traditions; sanātanāḥ - eternal; dharme - religion; naṣṭe - being destroyed; kulam - family; kṛtsnam - whole; adharmaḥ - irreligion; abhibhavati - transforms; uta - it is said.
Translation
With the destruction of the dynasty, the eternal family tradition is vanquished, and thus the rest of the family becomes involved in irreligion.
Purport
In the system of the varṇāśrama institution there are many principles of religious traditions to help members of the family grow properly and attain spiritual values. The elder members are responsible for such purifying processes in the family, beginning from birth to death. But on the death of the elder members, such family traditions of purification may stop, and the remaining younger family members may develop irreligious habits and thereby lose their chance for spiritual salvation. Therefore, for no purpose should the elder members of the family be slain.
कुल-क्षये - कुल का नाश होने पर; प्रणश्यन्ति - विनष्ट हो जाती हैं; कुल-धर्माः - पारिवारिक परम्पराएँ; सनातनाः - शाश्र्वत; धर्मे - धर्म; नष्टे - नष्ट होने पर; कुलम् - कुल को; कृत्स्नम् - सम्पूर्ण; अधर्मः - अधर्म; अभिभवति - बदल देता है; उत - कहा जाता है |

कुल का नाश होने पर सनातन कुल-परम्परा नष्ट हो जाती है और इस तरह शेष कुल भी अधर्म में प्रवृत्त हो जाता है |
Purport
वर्णाश्रम व्यवस्था में धार्मिक परम्पराओं के अनेक नियम हैं जिनकी सहायता से परिवार के सदस्य ठीक से उन्नति करके आध्यात्मिक मूल्यों कि उपलब्धि कर सकते हैं | परिवार में जन्म से लेकर मृत्यु तक के सारे संस्कारों के लिए वयोवृद्ध लोग उत्तरदायी होते हैं | किन्तु इन वयवृद्धों कि मृत्यु के पश्चात् संस्कार सम्बन्धी पारिवारिक परम्पराएँ रुक जाती हैं और परिवार के जो तरुण सदस्य बचे रहते हैं वे अधर्ममय व्यसनों में प्रवृत्त होने से मुक्ति-लाभ से वंचित रह सकते हैं | अतः किसी भी कारणवश परिवार वयोवृद्धों का वध नहीं होना चाहिए |
