The Mace: Bringing Symbolism and History to Convocation

This November, as thousands of graduands take the stage to convocate, they will pass by a shiny ornamental staff that packs a lot of symbolism and history.
The mace, carried into Convocation Hall to begin the ceremony, is a highly ornamented staff that symbolizes the authority of the University of Toronto. Brought into the proceedings by the beadle (the designated mace holder).
