Probably built in the 11th century, the castle Alt-Tierstein near Gipf-Oberfrick, was once the ancestral castle of an influential count family. From here, the Tiersteins created a large landed estate to which a considerable number of other castles belonged.
We will tell you the exciting story of the castle in 6 minutes.

Alt-Tierstein Castle, which is located near Gipf-Oberfrick, was probably built in the 11th century.
However, the settlement of the place goes back to 1000 BC. This is proven by objects from the Late Bronze Age, which were found during archaeological excavations.
The Tiersteiners first appear in written sources in 1082. In the late 11th and early 12th centuries they called themselves alternately von Homberg, von Frick and von Thierstein.
Presumably, the family already owned several castles at that time. In addition to Alt-Tierstein, the nearby castle of Alt-Homberg was also part of the family property. Therefore they used the different names.
The centerpiece of Alt-Tierstein is a high cliff that slopes steeply on all sides. On top of it there was a residential wing, of which there are still well visible remains of walls. There was also a cistern and a furnace here. The other parts of the castle are located on two terraces. On the higher one there were the castle gate, the courtyard and a second cistern. On the lower level there were several buildings. Since the existing remains of walls partially overlap, it is not possible to get a clear picture of the former buildings. However, it proves that the castle was rebuilt and extended several times.
There also seems to have been an outer castle. Presumably, however, it was abandoned in the 12th century. A keep does not seem to have existed, which indicates an early foundation of the castle.
In the 12th century, First Rudolf III married Bertha von Saugern. As the heiress daughter of the Counts of Saugern, she brought numerous goods and rights in the Birstal into the marriage. Thereupon it came to a property division with his brother Werner I. of Homberg and Alt-Tierstein became ancestral castle of the new family branch.
Rudolf's son, Rudolf I of Thierstein moved the center of the dominion to Büsserach in the canton of Solothurn. The castle there, Neu-Tierstein, became the headquarters. In the following centuries, the Tierstein family established a large dominion in the Basel area, which also included the castles of Farnsburg, Pfeffingen and Dorneck.
Until the beginning of the 14th century, Alt-Tierstein still served, at least in part, as the residence of the count's family. Later it was only the administrative seat of bailiffs. Before it was abandoned in the course of the 15th century.
Around 1461, the castle, which had become a ruin, came into the possession of Basel together with the entire Farnsburg dominion.
In the 16th century, the city sold the complex together with the surrounding woodland to the parish of Frick, which still owns it today.
Like many castle ruins, Alt-Tierstein served as a quarry for other buildings in the area.
In 1934 and 35, the remains were excavated and conserved. Further renovations followed. During the excavations, parts of armor and weapons, objects made of deer horn, ceramics and stove tiles were found.

Vielen herzlichen Dank.
