As a Romanian, I am deeply impressed with how well Storm Large managed to capture the spirit of this song. Very few Romanian singers would ''dare'' to walk into the footsteps of Maria Tanase, considered a national treasure, as she was well known for her powerful way of expressing herself through songs. This proves not only how great of a singer Storm Large is, but also how universal of a language the power of emotions is. Powerful, yet endearing. Bravo ! Mihai Dumitrescu.

Revin cu un al 2- lea comentariu după ce azi, am ascultat repetitiv melodia de cel puțin 5 ori, atât de impresionantă este interpretarea realizată de Pink Martini dar si linia melodică, nemaipomenind de versurile ce amplifica mesajul si mai ales fiindca doresc sa se cunoasca corect proveniența acestui cântec care, a dat naștere multor păreri.
Cântecul "Până când nu te iubeam" este cules si scris de Anton Pann (folclorist, a compus muzica Imnului National) pe la 1852 , este o creație românească, cu origini local - citadine, parte din folclorul mahalalelor Bucureștiului de alta data, cu vagi interferente orchestrale cu specii muzicale din perioada fanariotă (1700-1821) dar semnalate toate in interiorul granițelor tarii.
Un detaliu orchestral mai ales pentru cunoscători, este ca in aceasta piesa vioara are un acord special, încât să poată cânta simultan pe două octave iar pianul imită constant tambalul.
Piesa a consacrat-o pe Maria Tănase - e una dintre cele mai grele piese de interpretat din repertoriul marii noastre cantarete.
Se cunoaște faptul că, născută în una dintre mahalalele Bucureștiului, Maria Tănase asculta si interpreta de tânără cântecele auzite, având un talent deosebit dar a si cules mai apoi piese din toate regiunile, după cântece simbol de datini populare ( ex.: Cântec de nunta din Fagaras) prelucrate si interpretate mai ales în perioada interbelică.
Etnomuzicologi ca Harry Brauner si Tiberiu Alexandru i-au fost alaturi ajutand-o nu numai in munca de culegere si prelucrări ale liniilor melodice dar și cu înregistrările din perioada 1934-1963 iar cateva piese, au fost chiar înregistrate la Paris unde datorită interpretării de neegalat, Maria Tănase obține Grand Prix du Disque.
Se cunoaște deasemenea ca repertoriul Mariei Tănase cuprinde piese folclorice originale din locuri dragi pe unde ii plăcea să meargă fiind atrasă si de muzica lautareasca si care mai apoi, puse în valoare de felul în care știa sa le interpreteze, caci isi punea tot sufletul in a le reda pe deplin, au devenit șlagăre.
Ramane in memoria tuturor celor care o ascultă, o distinsa doamna care pe drept cuvânt a fost supranumită "Edith Praf a Romaniei!

@Daniel - I came back with the second comment after today I repeatedly listened to the song "Until I love you", at least 5 times, so impressive is the interpretation of Pink Martini but also melodic line and the lyrics that amplify the message but especially because I want to explain correctly the origin of this song that gave rise to so many opinions.
The song "Pana cand nu te iubeam/ Until I loved you " was collected & written by Anton Pann (folklorist, composer of The National Anthem) arround 1852 and it is a purely Romanian creation with local-old urban origins, partly from the folklore of the old Bucharest from the Phanariot Period on this land(1700-1821)but all reported inside the country's border.
An orchestral detail is that in this song, the violin has a special chord so that can play simultaneously on two octaves and the piano constantly imitates the tambal (musical instrument with pleasant origins).
The song consecrated Maria Tanase and it is one of the hardest to sing songs in the singer's repertoire.
Born in one of the city's margins (slums), the young MariaTanase listened to and performed the songs she heard with innate talent and later collected symbolic pieces of tradition from all regions, to perform them in the interwars period.
Two ethnomusicologists, Harry Brauner and Tiberiu Alexandru supported and guided her in the carrier between the years 1934-1963, reaching also in Paris for The Grand Prix du Disque, due to her unique interpretation.
Let's not forget that Maria Tanase was especially attracted by the fiddle music from whose repertoire she chose songs that later became pieces of resistance.
Maria Tanase remain in the memory of Romanians as a Great Lady rightly called Edith Piaf of Romania!

Cred ca au avut la dispozitie volumul cu cantece de Anton Pann tiparit, fraza muzicala e ca acolo. Ceea ce ma surprinde placut la Sorm Large, in afara calitatii vocii, este faptul ca surprinde cu exactitate si cu traire dramatismul iubirii pe cat de fulgeratoare pe atat de mistuitoare; o multime de cantarete romance nu au reusit asta, tot asa cum nu au reusit sa readuca atmosfera folclorului urban de acum cateva secole.
