    This takes me back! My family used to go on holiday to Fairbourne and we always took a ride on the little railway. In those days it was with different engines and rolling stock (and BR steam was also still working across the viaduct. There were also two Camping Coaches alongside the line near the level crossing). I recall that on the last day of one holiday there, we were riding back towards Fairbourne behind a loco called Katie, when she derailed. A rather poignant end to the holiday!

      @@mikaelabowen5781 wow! gosh a derailment, that's quite a story. Hope no one was hurt. Sounds like you have plenty of fond memories.

      @@LakeLocos No injuries, it wasn't too dramatic! We were riding in the carriage immediately behind the loco, when about the half-way point the train just came to a slightly bumpy halt. There were probably only a dozen or so passengers on board the train. We walked the rest of the way, feeling rather glum that tomorrow we'd be heading back home. Fairbourne has many magical memories for me. We used to stay in a house at the end of Ffordd y Bryn and there was a wonderful view down across the estuary. I love watching the steam trains going across the Barmouth viaduct.

    Wow this really took me back to holidays to Fairbourne in the early 1950’s with my father, mother, older brother and our large Old English Sheepdog. The journey there itself was an adventure in a motorcycle and sidecar. Mum and me in the sidecar, dad and George on the motorbike and Foy the dog on dad’s lap. I can see it now ears flapping fur streaming out in the wind. How far would you get these days before getting pulled over.

      I have to say the words Sidecar and dogs with ears flapping makes me think of Wallace & Grommet 😀

    When they regauged the railway they needed to know how wide the coaches should be. So they found out the average American bottom width as they reasoned that American bottoms are about the biggest bottoms around. So with the knowledge of the double American bottom width they were able to calculate how wide the coaches should be relative to the track gauge.

      @@AussiePom except this is in Wales 😂 nice try. I would say the seats are definitely not double a wide derrière!

    I do love the Fairbourne, I first travelled on it behind "Beddgelert". Also when saying the number 0 in a wheel arrangement, I'd recommend saying "Oh" instead as its a lot quicker, like a lot of adverts that tell you the phone number.

    Fairbourne has been abandoned to the sea. Relying on the main line railway for a while to hold the waters back but in 50 years time goodbye.

    Are some of the views “mirror images”? Barmouth bridge seems to be on the wrong side!

    • @LakeLocos
      @LakeLocos  Před měsícem +1

      @@davidrobinson3221 nothing is mirrored. However the Fairboune harbour station is still somewhat in the middle, between Barmouth and Fairbourne proper, hence the perspective. Hope that makes sense.
