the basic idea is that there are rights granted by the government (like freedom of movement, rights for people accused of crimes, etc) and there are rights that exist by virtue of being human. those "natural rights" are sometimes called "god given rights" are things like freedom of expression, the right to self defense, etc.

maybe you're getting stuck on "guns" when the right is actually about "arms"? "arms" can be any type of weapon. it would be ridiculous to write out a specific right for every potential type of weapon used. thats just not how it works.
if we had to explictly state every thing a right applies to then the first amendment would have to mention the internet, newspapers, texting, telephones, fax machines, telegraph, etc. like i said - thats just not how it works.
      > "After all, when they mention gun-laws/controls are bad, anti-American, etc. try buying a 20mm cannon!"
and that would be an infringement.
      > "The right to bear arms was written when you could own a .86 calibre rifle, now you can't"
there's no restrictions on .86 caliber black powder rifles. AFAIK it's even legal for felons to own them. you can even buy them through the mail with no background check!
      >there's always some been gun control, and there's always (since 1800s =before video games, rap music and films) been school shootings.
there's always been infringements on rights, not just gun rights. hell, the people who signed the document saying "all men are created equal" OWNED HUMAN SLAVES WHEN THEY SIGNED THE DOCUMENT.
past infringements don't justify current or future infringements.

@@ryanjones4877 I don't think we're totally disagreeing. That said, the right to 'bear arms' is usually taken as firearms, rather than a knife or similar which can be a tool, whereas guns only really have one purpose. I don't ever recall someone talking about the law with reference to a sword, for example. Also, a rifle over .50 I believe is illegal, which was my point about the law having been changed in reference to the calibre of bullet down the years. Finally, we have had to change laws to reference the radio, T.V., satellites and the internet in communication terms.
