Taiwan's Best 2023 Film? | Eye of the Storm 疫起 | Review

Eye of the Storm 疫起 (2023) directed by Chun-Yang Lin and staring Wang Po Chieh 王柏傑 (available now on Netflix) is a Taiwanese procedural drama about the SARS epidemic of 2003 which happened in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. The film draws parallels to the pandemic of modern day. In April of 2003 in Taiwan a hospital in Taiwan was quarantined and the doctors, nurses, and patients were all stuck inside for weeks. The setting makes for a dramatic and cinematic film and the movie "Eye of the Storm" benefits greatly from this structure. The film is one of the better movies to come out Taiwan in 2023, and although it suffers from a little bit of melodrama, the acting and directing ultimately made this film one of my favorite recent works to come from Taiwan. Ohhhh im so glad I came by this! I remember watching about 30 mins of this a while time ago and then I lost it, couldnt remember what it was. But it has so much heart!! I also really like your bit about "propaganda doesn't have to be good or bad, it just has an agenda" - takes me back to my film school days, there's so much to learn from analyzing movies :')
