- In 1959 Britain's biggest cinema company, the Rank Organisation, decided to replace its newsreels with a series of short, quirky, topical documentaries that examined all aspects of life in Britain. For the next ten years, Look at Life chronicled - on high-grade 35mm colour film - the changing face of British society, industry and culture. Britain on Film draws upon the 500 films in this unique archive to offer illuminating and often surprising insights into what became a pivotal decade in modern British history. The series shows how Look at Life reflected the radical shifts in the position of women in British society, and shows how the country adapted to the new demands and expectations of women at home, in the workplace and at play.

I'm getting a massive pang of nostalgia and I so wish we still lived in those times. Even though it was far from perfect I would swap it for today's congested slovenly bad mannered version of society any day.
You wont find many people arguing with that, especially if they lived through the post war years.
I can't be the only one who has an irrational fondness for the theme tune for "Look at Life." The program itself is weirdly fascinting certainly from a historical point of intetest.
ohhhh THAT intro music, I'm in heaven
Isn't it fab?
In my youth I'd probably have sneered at, or been indifferent to, the style of these types of film. Viewed now, I'm on the verge of tears throughout; at my lost youth, the 'innocence' of the delivery, the background music and the overall ambience presented.
I am rather disconsolate about the modern world, for too many reasons to name.
Hi
I feel just like you watching these Look at Life Films and it makes me tearful at times.
i was a child of the 60's and don't remember that much but the stuff i do remember gives me a warm feeling inside. Life did seem simpler then and innocent. My childhood was great and I loved going out to 'play' with my neighbours and friends and spending time in our local park on our own without parents. !!!!
.
But having watched a lot of these films over the last 16 months since COVID messed up the world were things better? I think not as we may have been looking at everyone as good people and seeing things with rose tinted spectacles.
@@joanne26 Thanks for your reply. It's difficult to describe my feelings to this type of thing. I suppose there are some elements of 'rose tints', but my reactions seem too real and crystal-clear to rationalise away.
500 of these films were made, love to see them all!,
@ Same thing every day Today with "The One Show" Intro drives me nuts !
Skip to 2:18 to save it, something undreamed of in 1960 !
clipgrab them before the marxists erase them! lookup cook report too! czcams.com/users/results?search_query=cook+report
@@GrrMeister The intro is my favorite part.
@@ih302 That music is so much of that era, optimistic, cheerful and decent. The intro shows all the marvellous things that would one day become commonplace - things we barely notice in the modern world like helicopters and hovercraft.
Now in my 7th decade I know I've seen the best of the UK, to me very little has got better, the only useful thing that's appeared is 't'internet'. It's lovely to see how things were and know I was there then!
Bull fighting must have been a real stressful job.
Hitchcock the Matador was said to be 31 years old and looked at least 50.
WTF? An office building with a staff swimming pool??
Blimey, even the traffic wardens looked human then !
racist piece of shit.
I don't know what they look like now
I'm 35 and live the 1950s life apart from my laptop which is hidden I drive a 59 Hillman Minx. I hate today's rubbish.
I remember that car, it's probably worth more today than when it was brand new.
@The Englishman Everything I own Even my car. apart from a laptop
@The Englishman Dont watch telly
Thanks MM. Yes i noticed after i'd commented about the artist of said tune, you replied elsewhere and thanks.:). Had this hunch it may have been cancelled after the recent rewind the 60's (with Lulu) series was cancelled at short notice. I missed that 1st time round and then on the repeat run, they missed out an episode..and then on the 3rd run, think they only showed 1 episode and cancelled at very short notice the remainder, due to various people being involved in the on going scandal.
Old vince the bull fighter at 27,00. Whats he up to now then?
Don't worry, the last 5 episodes will be up in due time. There was a mid-season break when the first series aired. In responce to your other question. I have uploaded the theme tune
Many thanks for uploading these valuable videos. Pity the silly people who left thumbs-downs!
ModifiedMethod, would you perhaps be able to upload the missing S2E3 Island Nation, as well? It appears to have been deleted.
Wow, imagine having to divot a minefield ! "I say, chaps, has anybody seen my left leg ?"
@1:35 Now that is what I call a bong !
I'll see what I can find out. fingers crossed

Lovely Rita, meter maid
Nothing can come between us
When it gets dark I tow your heart away
Standing by a parking meter
When I caught a glimpse of Rita
Filling in a ticket in her little white book
In a cap she looked much older
And the bag across her shoulder
Made her look a little like a military man
Lovely Rita, meter maid
May I inquire discreetly
When are you free to take some tea with me?
Rita!
Took her out and tried to win her
Had a laugh and over dinner
Told her I would really like to see her again
Got the bill and Rita paid it
Took her home, I nearly made it
Sitting on the sofa with a sister or two
Oh, lovely Rita, meter maid
Where would I be without you
Give us a wink and make me think of you

A policemen not wearing body armour , teenagers brought up not dragged up , cleaner streets , nurses doing 45 hours a week ,hmm where did we go wrong !!!
The Police, especially in London were corrupt & in league with criminal gangs who controlled large swathes of the city. Crimes such as domestic abuse were ignored. Armed robbery was a daily occurrence. The cities were filthy & polluted. Half the country was a bomb site.
These films were not reality, but fluffy entertainment for the masses that they showed between films at the cinema.
@@zivkovicable These films were reality in many ways but didn't feature the down side of society. Your assertion that the Police were in league with the criminal gangs is I'll bet exaggerated though of course would have existed. Violent crime, even in London, was a fraction of what it is now and the most depressed areas were a safe haven compared with the sink estates of today. Knife crime, outside the worst parts of the large cities, was virtually unheard of. Every era has its good and bad aspects, there are many things I miss about old London, where I grew up, but wouldn't want to go back to those times.
Covering up paedophilia, corrupt police, wife beating, homophobia, racism, crap food.
Good old days.
we will get back to these kinds of days, but only when money is sound and backed with gold again.
Dave and Jean from Aberdeen.
22:37 Free three course lunches on the firm !
Couldn’t watch the Bullfighting part which is extremely cruel
Unless its on a break, looks like BBC4 cancelled the remainder of the series. Not on next week.?
Two men stand around idly and watch as the bomb disposal man does his work. Such calm confidence... Oh wait, how many bomb disposal casualties?

397 got it wrong and were blown up !
Many of them Ex Prisoners of War, so that's all right then ?
The ex-POWs provided labor, like digging for the bomb. The people who lost their lives, except in a few cases, were military members of the bomb disposal units trying to actually disarm the bombs.
@6:58 - My god ! That shambles was our country's future defence ??
Look at the pride everyone took in their jobs, everyones dressed smart, the roads, pavements, buses, buildings all look neat and orderly, i dont like this narrative of England "needed" immigration, im not white british myself.
0:52 They said I was getting a lovely company car. And they told me it would be an open top. Look what they fucking gave me, WTF. I’m going to be speaking to the boss later definitely.

Yes Sir, about ½ now are not from England, but we call it home. Such great welfare system and all free today NHS, Free House, regular payments and School for kids. What's not to like ?
@Houston's mccaine And then we have the non English, who are filling the prisons. If the English are such racists, why do non Whites find it such a desirable place to live. Name me a more desirable and safer country for Blacks or Muslims to live.
