Things have changed a lot since 1993 !
I bought this vhs series in 1998. There was little or no internet and no you tube. Unless you were trying to figure all this stuff out in a book, you were out of luck. This was my bible. God bless Dr. Deleplane. This was just prior to varroa.
Great videos Buddy. My Father used to keep Bees and watching these videos has got me to thinking again. I do know a bit about it obviously but so much more to learn. I love the little creatures. When they are not in a stinging mood that is. I'm in Canada and was able to Winter over one hive with great success. The cold and snow aren't conducive for the little fellows but it was a decent start in the Spring. I will be watching all of the available videos. Just left them more than enuff food, wrapped the hive in insulation and burlap and then packed snow around as it fell. I think that they were pretty toasty. Probably warmer than we were anyway.
This series is awesome and I enjoy it alot. I do see the Beaver grown up and gone to the gym feel. Personally I like to see this guy with a beer in his hand while he works with the bees.
Looks like Terramycin is no longer used as a pre-treatment, but only on veterinary recommendation. That's likely to cut down on antibiotic overuse. I bought American and European Foulbrood test kits to have handy in case we spot infection.
This series is awesome, this guy looks like the Beaver all grown up. This reminds me of the Everything is Terrible channel.
Thanks for posting.
@Farmus12 Generally accepted best management practices now days would say to use absolutely nothing for AFB treatment and instead destroy infected colonies, in coordination with state apiary agencies (if available). No preventative treatments are recommended due to the AFB bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics. Also use hygienic stock. It is still being made and your supplier will probably have it soon.
HOLY 1980's
he looks like Mark Walhberg in the Shooter country style
novice beginner here are pollen substitute patties still used in 2014 ? and the antibody?
I have got so much out of this series.Thank you for the info and walking us through every step. where can we get the soy flower?
What do you use now that terramycin is not being made anymore Can not find in store and online I get ***Manufacturer back Order*** Other oxytetracycline i find have not been labled for Bees
ah now i understand how you can have "organic" honey....I didnt realize there were antibiotics and stuff you can give to bees.
Mary!!!! You own me!!
the feeding of the bees with that patty mix and medicinal stuff, you didnt mention when and how often to do it? help!!
Or do you get to substitute flour
We had the same Mickey Mouse sweatshirt back in the day.
Don't like the use of antibiotics can you replace it with sth else such as colloidal silver maybe ?
I would be interested in an answer to this question, also.
This video has some years on it's neck, and the use of medication, pollen substitute and all that crap, is way outdated. There are better, safer, healthier and cheaper methods to deal with pests. The pollen and sugar supplement is only something you need after a hive raid by a bear. If you need it because your bees are starving, you must leave more honey for the bees to eat. That's why they gather honey and pollen in the first place. Look at some bee forum and/or buy a bee book.
This video series is actually from 1993 so yeah, it is pretty outdated.
ha.. Micky mouse.. :)
