If you're thinking that "Haal" is "Hål", but in the older swedish language, you're wrong, it might sound similar but that's all.
"Grohf", "Rauf" and "Hol" are "Hål", "Haal" however is an old slang for "Halr" which means "Man" or "Hero"
So I assume it's a real name and just not a lastname namechange, "Golden man" would probably mean that he had a rich father or something in that direction, while "Golden hero" would mean that he was a really good warrior or that he was a rich warrior.
And then there is one more thing I came to think about, and that is if he were a warrior with really blonde hair which had been taken cared of alot (as in cleaning)

@raunchydrphil "I'm on the right track" 🤣 nope I'm irish, not irish descent, actually irish, in Ireland, and that how we pronounce it here in Ireland. It is an Irish word, it means freedom and the name is quite common especially in Republican areas, like where I live in a border county. We do have different dialects regionally but this particular word/name really only changes in regions where there is zero Irish spoken, and the actress is on record as saying she doesn't speak Irish and does pronounce it wrong. Now just to confuse the issue there are some Irish words that are in everyday use in Ireland, one of them is Saor. Saor means free. Like Saorview, meaning free view, which is how you receive free TV access in Ireland. Which is how alot of homes still receive TV here, especially penioners. RTE, TV3 and TG4 are all saorview channels. Saorview is state run and even on the TV and radio ads they run, it's pronounced sayrview. The word saor is also used in the national anthem, again, some of the only irish most GAA fans can actually recite accurately, "Faoi mhóid bheith saor, seantír ár sinsear feasta" definitely pronounced sayr.

    • @Mithrandir-Apkallu
      @Mithrandir-Apkallu Před 8 lety +17

+Thil Gy in Swedish is pronounced yü (y as in yes, German umlauted u), also the "hello" is an approximation by Conan. The aa is like the a in far and the sound at the end is just a brief schwa sound like the a in about. Gj is also pronounced like y, in other words like Swedish j (the G is essentially silent).
On a side note, Gyllenhaal isn't the original family name. Lieutenant Nils Gunnarsson Haal had his surname changed to Gyllenhaal in 1652 when he was ennobled. Gyllen means golden, Haal refers to where he was from (and it was his original surname).

He comes from a long line of Swedish nobles. The first Gyllenhaal was actually named Gunnesson but got called Haal when he became a knight (aprox. 1620). When he got ennobled in 1652 he received the name Gyllenhaal. They added the name Gyllen, I’m guessing it’s because in Swedish it means golden. If i remember correctly it was Jakes great great grandpa that first left sweden in 1860. The Gyllenhaal name is as far as I know dying in sweden, the ones that i can find are all old.

Just to stop all the arguing and confusion, Gyllenhaal is a Swedish noble name which originated in Härene a little outside what we know today as Göteborg. The name at the time originated from Härene which meant "bedrock" and "stoney ground" or even "hare" as in the animal.
There a noble family with the name Gyllenhaal became and roughly translates to "Golden hall" which has the meaning of a large hall with pure value made to shimmer in the eyes of the mighty warriors of nobility "knights". But Gyllenhaal is the more known name as there were many of it's particular kind, like Gyllenhahl, Gyllenhal, Gyllenhammer, Gyllengrip, Gyllenfalck, Gyllenpamp and even Gyllengard. So the clear the dust, it is a title giving to people with military rank such as generals and officers.

I'm Swedish, and that name Gyllenhaal doesn't sound or spell very Swedish at all. I thought for sure that the name was Dutch or Danish, and come to find out here, his pronunciation of his name is unmistakably Danish. Jake claims that he's half Swedish, but with that pronunciation it's more likely one side of his family are Danes who maybe lived in Sweden..?
    I'm so confused. LOL.
The most hilarious thing is that the double "a" is a replacement for the letter "å" (pronounced like the "o" in words like "door", or "more", or "soar". That means Jake's name is "Gyllenhål", .... which translates into "golden hole" ... and wow... gives me so many disturbing mental images.

***** If someone asks what race you are; you're Caucasian (a presumption... correct me if I'm wrong). Your cultural heritage could be Irish but that doesn't make you Irish. I mean, in the end it's up to each person how they identify themselves just saying I find Americans weird how they're always like "I'm Italian" "I'm Irish" "I'm Swedish" when they have probably never set foot in the country and likely don't speak the language. I would say 'My grandfather was Lithuanian' or maybe even 'My dad's family is Lithuanian' not' I'm Lithuanian' although I love Lithuania (yes, I have been there), I celebrate Lithuanian style Christmas with my Lithuanian family and I speak Lithuanian. My dad calls himself Lithuanian-Australian but he's half so I think that's normal. I also think it's normal to say 'I'm American' or 'I'm Australian' even if you're not indigenous because I assure you the culture of the countries under those modern names are very different to the culture of the indigenous people. Like I said though, you've every right to identify yourself how you like and I've got the right to call it weird.

Precis, Gyllenhaal är en svensk adelssläkt (jag är släkt med dem så jag vet), grejen är att "haal" är ett gammalsvenskt ord (men jag kommer inte ihåg exakt vad det betyder) så därför kan det vara lite förvirrande.

American heritage claims downright amuse me. If your grandma was -say - Italian, but you never set foot in the old country, you do not speak a word in Italian, don't follow any cultural or ethnical traditions... then you are not Italian in any way.
      You're american, period.
And there's nothing wrong with that, the US is a mixed and multi-cultured melting pod, that has produced it's own one. Claiming that you are part of another culture just because family name implies, or that one of your ancestors came from Sicily doesn't make you automatically an Italian.
That's my two cents, feel free to argue.

The name is from a Swedish noble family back in long-ago.. His last known Swedish relative was his great great grandfather.. The cadence makes it very hard for anyone who's not from the Nordic countries to pronounce Swedish words good.. Except for a lot of practice of course.
