How to Prevent Disease in your Aquarium

- I recently treated my African Cichlids for gill flukes, and it got me thinking about how medicating fish is more often than not a bandaid solution that does not fix the underlying core of what caused the outbreak of disease in the first place. It's not uncommon for people to fall on either extreme of: (a) They never have any disease in their fish tank, or; (B) They are caught in a vicious cycle of medicating their fish and are unable to get of the disease. In this video I discuss why this is, and what I believe are the 3 main underlying causes of disease in fish, and how to prevent them.

Great video. I think your understanding, outlook, and approach is excellent and pertinent especially for people who keep crowded community tanks. I keep mostly South and Central American Cichlids, and monster fish. But I like to keep somewhat overstocked tanks for the movement and balance aggression. If you keep these types of tanks then you have to be thorough with maintenance and awareness. Thanks for your excellent content. And your parrotlett is adorable.

I've been keeping fish for 45-years and been very successful with only a few outbreaks of disease, mainly Ich.
I agree with your tips for keeping fish healthy, with regular maintenance being at the top of the list to keep water quality high.

Iâve lost many cichlids and loaches (which I bought from many shops including MAD aquarium) this winter but still keeping the lights on the fish tank. My disasters was related to putting too cold water (more than 80%) and suddenly emptying the whole water from fish tank(!) so, Iâve lost near 20 beautiful fishes. However, after this two incidents, I had ich problem so shared the idea with Red dragon aquarium and they gave me a blue liquid (copper?) to add in each water changes. Now, everything looks good by more routine water changes and feeding.
Iâm looking for adding more colourful peacocks like Acei Tanzania (black body yellow fin and tail). I didnât find them in brisbane but itâs nice to see them in your tank. I saw one in MAD but itâs not for sale.
Thank you :) I'm sorry to hear about your fish! Shock/stress will definitely do it. It sounds like the blue liquid might be methylene blue, that is commonly used to treat ich. I'm glad to hear everything is going well now for you
Very informative video, I have a Moori cichlid(Blue Dolphin) and I've treated him for gill flukes because of flashing but I have found he's just being aggressive and trying to show dominance. I ended up grinding down all the rough edges of my dragon stone and he's no longer tearing himself up. Thank you for another great video, look forward to more.
That's great to hear that he isn't hurting himself on the rock anymore :) My blue dolphin is quite sensitive too, he has gotten fin rot before, but mine hasn't been aggressive thankfully

Good info Kaity! I struggle with this subject. Itâs so hard to properly diagnose fish disease. I have not had much luck. I recently had 2 electric blue acara die randomly a few days apart. No other fish had any issues. Not sure what happened they looked healthy and had good color. They also ate well. I have 3 other same species and they are still healthy. I agree with what you said about keeping your tank clean will prevent most issues. I keep mostly African and South American Cichlids and they are very hardy fish.
Thank you đ it's the worst when that happens! It's often hard to work out exactly what it is. Luckily some fish are just hardy enough to withstand most things, but others aren't so lucky đ

Great video! Flukes are almost impossible to completely eradicate. They are one of those parasites that are likely always present in the tank, but if you keep your fish healthy and treat them routinely, they won't become a problem.
I'm not a fan of chemicals or medications either, but praziquantel treatments every now and again have served me well and kept them in check.

@@Kaityscichlids I use a treatment called Fluke Solve. It's from a UK manufacturer called Vetark. Keep a look out for it, it's fantastic.

Thank you Mike đ Flukes is similar to ich, but not quite the same. With ich you'll see the little white spots form, whereas you won't see that with flukes. And Parrotlets and parakeets are different too, but both are types of parrots!

@@Kaityscichlids I was checking online to if there's any shops that sell them near me. The closest one is about 70 miles from me, they had Turquoise Blue Parrotlets which were absolutely beautiful in the pics.

Good video, as always. Do you have mbunas in with your Haps and peacocks? How do you manage their feeding so the mbunas don't eat meat proteins?

Thank you đ Yes, I do. I feed them a mixed pellet diet of low protein mixed with algae (NLS Thera A) and then algae only pellets/flakes too (NLS Algae Max/Bug Bites by Fluval). Then the Mbuna eat algae on the rocks throughout the day. I avoid putting in anything like brine shrimp or bloodworms, but I have spot fed brine shrimp to my peacocks/haps a couple of times as they often come to the top before the Mbuna do

Hi Kaity, are those the eheim jager heaters in your waterbox? Also, what heater do you recommended and what have you had good experiences with? One of my tanks heaters blew recently and replaced with with an eheim jager based on all the recommendations I've seen on CZcams but I've seen some negative comments so I'm wondering if it is that great or not. Hi Mustapha! Yes, they're 300W Eheim heaters đ I've found them to be great so far. I connect mine to a temperature regulator because I find in general most aquarium heaters are unreliable. My regulator is from Keg King and has been really good

Seachem Polyguard is a good broad range medication, they say itâs best used when youâre not 100% sure what disease/issue youâre dealing with. Havenât tried it yet but Iâm gonna get some to have on hand just in case

I am evaluating the possibility of getting a fluval fx4 for my 90 gallon aquarium, but I have read that every 2 hours they make a sound when is ridding itself of air, is that sound loud from your perspective? I ask this because I am sensitive to loud noises, and I have the aquarium on my bedroom.
I'm also quite sensitive to sound, and my biggest struggle with the Fluval FX6 has been the constant vibration because it has such a large pump (and I have 2 of them). I wouldn't be able to stand them in my bedroom. However, I found that shortening the hoses as much as possible and having it on sound pads has made it bearable for the living area. The ridding itself of air noise is something that only happens when it is first turned on and has air in the system, but it's a temporary sound for like 10 seconds. After that you only hear them stop then start again

Try red root floaters to start with.
I have heard a lot of people have success with anubias attached to their rocks. Otherwise vallisneria is also a good option as long as the plant is big enough and held down in the substrate

Vitamin deficiency is another factor, especially vitamin C.
My tip is a good retailer will quarantine and treat their livestock before it's available to buy. So ask in the store if they do this.

Hi Manoj! Giving the gravel/sand a really good siphon and cleaning out the filters with water from your tank is a good idea if you haven't already. It helps to reduce their population significantly. I did that before I started treatment, then again before I added the second dose of the Blue Planet Fluke Tabs. I haven't had any issues with the flukes again so far. You might need to repeat the treatment and continue the more thorough maintenance if they are sticking around still

When you say you cleaned your subtrate, filter and the glass I presume you didn't do them all at the same time as that would kill alot of the beneficial bacteria?
I did do them at the same time, but I cleaned the canister filters with tank water. Then for cleaning the glass and substrate it was only wiping over the glass and siphoning the substrate (I didn't rinse it with tap water or anything like that)
@@Kaityscichlids Thanks for your reply reply, I was led to believe that even if you clean the filter in tank water and siphon through the gravel at the same time you get rid of alot of beneficial bacteria. Whether it's different cos I have 90 litre tank and yours is alot bigger?
@@alexanderhalliwell2109 that's true, it would definitely be more detrimental for a smaller tank/filter. It also depends on the age of the tank too. Older more established tanks can have pretty robust bacteria colonies whereas newer ones they're a bit more fragile. I would avoid doing a full clean like that on a tank that was only 3 months old, whereas one that's over a year old it's a lot safer
@@Kaityscichlids I've had it a few years now and it's a fluval u2 filter 90 litres. I've had problems with fish dying and I'm pretty certain I'm over cleaning it. Also I've had smaller fish like guppies and now tetra and maybe there more sensitive when it comes to something like this!!!??? Thanks for your reply đ đ

The way I catch fish is wait til itâs pitch dark in the room for a little bit, then I wear a headlight that has a green light on it. It doesnât spook them at all and you can catch whatever fish you want very easily since theyâre âasleepâ from being in the dark

Great video! Iâm dealing with anchorworms in my African tank right now! Such a mess! I think the number one thing to keep disease and parasites out of your show tanks has got to be quarantine systems. Unfortunately, I have no spare quarantine tanks right now, because both of my quarantine tanks are full of young fish growing out waiting to get big enough to go into their tanks. So I had to add my Africans directly to my tank when they came in. Now, my 150 gallon tank is for lack of a better word a giant quarantine system. They are going through the IV treatment right now. Salt, internal parasite cleansing, antibiotics, and external parasite cleansing. Iâve got a good two months worth of treatment to try and knock out these anchor worms ahead of me. Such a nasty little bugger!đ đŠŻ
