    One interesting bit of trivia: the reason the pope wears white cassock and accessories is because of Pope Pius V in the 16th century. Pius V was a Dominican and an inquisitor and when elected to the papal throne he retained the white habit of the Dominicans. Prior to that most popes wore red, like the cardinals.

    This is the kind of video that would be enhanced greatly by pictures of each item and pictures of the whole habit with each modification. It would be nice if similar videos would include images in the future. But it was still a good video, interesting and informative; thank you.

    #AskAFriar Father, I am starting my Postulancy as a Lay Dominican. I have often heard that one of the practical uses of a Capuce is to help block out distractions during prayer. I suppose a hoodie would accomplish the same thing, but late spring and summer are not good seasons to put on my favorite hoodie jackets. I think it would be kind of cool if you sold lightweight hot weather hoodies and heavier cold weather hoodies with oversized hoods that mimic the habit of the Order. White on the bottom, and black from the mid-upper arm up with the Thomistic Institute logo printed on the right side of the chest.

    I am in discernment to be a part of the Dominican Laity and I had a couple of questions that so far have gone unanswered, which both sort of tie together, and I was hoping maybe someone could help.
    All Dominicans wear the scapular, but for the laity I only usually see either the small square or the large square scapulars. Is the full scapular restricted only to the first and second order, or can it be worn by the laity during religious work such as Altar serving?
    The second: a lay Dominican has the option to be buried in the full habit. If we were to purchase our burial habits, I understand why it would be improper to wear them outside the home, but is it also improper to wear them in our homes for personal prayer?

      @@jaw0449 That's the general impression I get but pretty much everytime I ask it's the same "huh, you know, I'm not really sure." Haha.
      No one in the group I'm discerning with wears it to the meetings. One or two wear the cross, and one couple say they wear the brown scapular since the white dirties so easily. All understandable but to raise awareness that we exist, especially to the very parish we have our meetings at, you'd think we'd maybe try and be a bit more recognizable.
      Again, I'm still awaiting my Rite of Admission so I still don't even have voting rights, but I'm coming up with suggestions and share some that I feel are more important than what is more akin to vanities, but still, the curiosity drives me.

    • @MsPinson
      @MsPinson Před rokem +1

      There isn't a worldwide answer because conditions and needs vary between provinces: in some provinces it may be helpful to raise awareness of the presence of Catholics (where there is very restricted religious presence, e.g. because of previous persecutions in former communist countries), in most western countries it's more of an issue of properly distinguishing between religious and laity and not having Lay Dominicans imitating religious life in ways which are not conducive to an authentic lay spirituality. With regards to your specific points, you can wear what you want for private prayer in your own room and there will be no Church documents to restrict this, it is a matter of personal piety the Order and the Church won't get involved. The best thing there would be to discuss it with a spiritual director and get to the bottom of the motivations for wanting to do it. For altar serving, the scapular would not replace the proper clerical clothing in use in that country (alb or surplice), so it wouldn't usually be seen if you did wear it.

    #AskAFriar Can you cover the difference between the Clerical Brother and the Cooperator Brother?

    • @lughnacide9778
      @lughnacide9778 Před rokem +3

      A brother may be called to the priesthood or not. Clerical brothers are priests while cooperator brothers are not priests but still live, study, and participate inside the community. They are also known as lay brothers (different from Dominican Laity or Lay Dominicans like I am working towards).
      A cooperator brother is that, a brother, who wears the full habit and cooperates in the Dominican life but has not been called to, or ordained a priest.

    Also, was Daniel's prayer being sabotaged by the devil without him knowing it? Can that happen to us too? And how come the Angel Gabriel couldn't handle it and needed Michaels's help?

    How did the friars clean their white habits on the road as they were preaching?

    • @CarpeDiem-bu3lz
      @CarpeDiem-bu3lz Před rokem +1

      Maybe they let them get dirty. I’m not sure. I do know that St Dominic was known to walk barefoot so as to not ruin his sandals, but I am sure that his habit would have gotten dirty or torn. I also know that St Dominic frequently slept on the side of the road as he travelled to preach. I assume that this also would have dirtied his habit.

    Thank you Fr Little for this input.
    When I look at the pictures I see Lay Dominicans (e.g St Catherine of Siena & others) wearing Dominican habits, why is that nowadays Lay Dominicans ARE NOT to wear the habit ?

    • @MsPinson
      @MsPinson Před rokem +1

      The place of third order Dominicans (and tertiaries from other orders too) has evolved over time. Both Lay Dominicans and apostolic sisters grew out of the third order - secular and regular. The apostolic sisters obviously can wear the habit.
      The understanding of the role of the laity in the Church has been evolving such that it would be unhelpful, at least in the west, for Lay Dominicans to wear the habit now - our Rule emphasises that our first vocation is as lay people living in the world and that being a Lay Dominican is a particular way of living out our baptismal vocation within that state. The Order is keen to promote an authentically lay spirituality and to distinguish between things proper to religious life and things suitable for all Dominicans, so that Lay Dominicans don't end up being a sort of wannabe religious halfway house but have our own identity and place in the Church. There are places and times when wearing the habit was encouraged, but when the role of tertiaries was quite different.
