I try to imagine in this and the Sussex Vampire, if the world was so simple, so unassuming that here this man knew nothing about this woman, she knew the criminal background of her life and possible repercussion and both walked into marriage and expected what-peace and happiness?
As for the SV your step child attempts to kill your child, you say nothing and blame the husband for his fear and precautions from actions he perceives as psychotic on your part. Loved the stories but I always wonder at the seeming naivety of the characters

Back then, men were blinded by love and just entered a marriage they had no idea how badly it would go. They should've gotten to know the lady first, meet his or her family, go on a few outings/dates before deciding on marriage. But there are reasons why the lady never speaks of her background or what goes on in the family, but its due to fear or cowardice.
In Elsie's case, she couldn't tell Hilton because she feared learning the truth of her criminal background would destroy his reputation that a respectable man marrying a criminals's daughter would bring a scandal and she knew Slaney is a dangerous crook and feared Hilton would get killed, which does happen sadly because Elsie naively thought she could persuade Slaney to leave with money and tried to kill herself when Hiltin died, now has to live as a lonely widow due to her poor choices.
In Elisabeta's case (that's the name of the wife in SV), she caught Jacky trying to kill his half-brother and beat him savagely, an act which convinced everyone she's a horrible stepmother abusing her crippled stepson. She never told Robert because he was angry with her, but she knew how much he loved his son and the truth would break his heart. Her constant attempts to protect the baby grow worse as people assumed she's unstable and insane, getting locked in her room against her will. She tells the nurse to guard the baby but to still not tell Robert, then hide away in an old shed with the baby because Jacky is still after the baby's life and have the nurse stay quiet but get into trouble when the father comes home. Those choices were cowardly on Elisabeta's part because she kept her mouth shut, all for the sake of upsetting her husband that his son is a mentally unstable child trying to commit murder against a baby. Now the whole family's gonna need lots of therapy to recover, while Jacky goes on a one year trip at sea as a punishment.
