    I loved how the Doctor so clearly *needed* to talk about what happened with the Flux, how he both dreaded and was relieved to get to talk to Donna about it, how frustrated he was when it turned out not to be Donna after all, screaming and pounding the walls. And most of all, the way at the end he wasted no time finding out if the real Donna already knew what had happened to him. He just can't bring himself to *tell* her, but he was clearly desperately hoping she knew and he could thus talk to her about it all.

      What are you talking about he was like this with donna the entire time. You not remember the library, how he was with her family, the metacrisis. He opened up after the fires of Pompei and the whole concept was the doctor needed a companion, someone like donna to stop him being an emotionless arsehole.

    3 suggestions for the horse alien species name:
    1) The Equuleus - Comes from the Latin for "little horse" and is also a constellation with no bright stars (appropriate for the end of the universe).
    2) The Eponi. Taken from the Celtic/Gaulish goddess of horses.
    3) The Godivi. The statue of Lady Godiva riding a horse in Coventry is named "Self Sacrifice". Very appropriate given how this heroic captain met her end.

  • @msspi764
    @msspi764 Před 7 měsíci +10

    I think the whole episode was a great exercise in self examination. What makes you you? What makes your friends and family themselves? How do you know? The pilot's choice was heroic, but it was self protection on several levels.

    • @lisa_wistfulone7957
      @lisa_wistfulone7957 Před 7 měsíci

      I agree. Each moment as we realized that the Doctor chose the wrong Donna felt like an eternity to me, it was so well written and timed. I pondered it afterwards: Should Donna feel betrayed by his mistake? Why did they barely talk about it (in a meaningful way) afterwards? But the simple, quiet way they deal with it really lets them (and us) focus on how complex the question really is.
      I think you really hit on something, actually, an important theme. The Doctor, Donna, and Rose Noble are all intersecting at a time when each has recently had a critical moment/realization about who they really are and how they see themselves. While Donna has accepted that she sees herself as both insignificant AND brilliant, the Doctor probably has a lot to work out in his future story arc.

    Christel is one of my favorite voices in the DW fan space. Was surprised and delighted to see her back last week.
    I think the thing I enjoyed most this episode was learning why The Doctor was pounding on that bulkhead, as it was like the only shot from Wild Blue Yonder that we saw in any promotional material. I'd assumed it was connected to someone taking or trying to hurt Donna. It's very 10/14 to have a meltdown like that when companions are threatened beyond his ability to help them (see: him shouting at the universe at the end of last episode.) But the real reason for his outburst was so much more personally painful than I ever would've expected. He flips out because he'd thought Donna was privy to his torment and could help him to shoulder the burden, only to have that hope pulled out from under him and used to pierce his own heart. Incredible choice.

    Horse pilot species suggestion: Shuvalski
    Reason being, there is a species of horse called the Przewalski's horse (pronounced Shuvalski's horse), which is the only true species of wild horse left in the world, and in the 1930s there were only 11 of them left in the world. Massive conservation efforts were made to help the horse, and now there's over 178 of the horses in the wild. It's one of the biggest conservation successes in history and shows the good that humanity can do, nicely mirroring the goodness and heroism of the horse pilot in the episode, countering the view of the duplicates in the episode.

Also the don’t think has a mix of the same kinda horror of don’t blink if you fall to involuntary action you “lose” how ever the losing state itself has its own horror angles have the horror of not knowing where they are and they can take you so easily you end up at an unknown time separated from everything you know. However with these things they don’t behave according to laws of physics so the lose state is also kinda a horror in fear.

    As the alien captain is a horse-like being floating in space in an episode which the title basically translates as "sky", I'd call that species the "Kefagasus", a mix of "kefáli" ("head" in greek, as they're a horse-headed species) and "pegasus" (a mythological winged-horse and a famous constellation). Also, I'd name the captain herself "Enif", which is one of the names for the brightest star in the Pegasus' constellation that marks the muzzle of the figure.

    I know someone's already said it, but I do think 'Equinox' would be a really fantastic name for the horse connection, but also due to the dictionary definition being: the time or date (twice each year) at which the sun crosses the celestial equator, when day and night are of approximately equal length. This is brilliant because it is something which occurs twice a year, therefore is a very slow process, and when it occurs day and night are of equal length... ironic given the introduction of the creatures the captain defeated were introduced with arms too long, and the fake Donna was detected to have a wrist which was too long. This would make the name of the captains species not only horse related, but also the antithesis of the creatures the captain has defeated 😄

    When I saw the Captain, I thought surely it must be a reference to Mari Lwyd knocking on the door. And if course it's the perfect time of year for it. So let's lean into it and make the species The Marilood!

    Fantastic episode. So surreal and disturbing in a way Doctor Who so rarely dares to be. Real sort of Lovecraftian cosmic horror stuff.
    ...although it is all rather undercut by the fact that if the TARDIS had just left well enough alone, the plan would've gone off without a hitch anyway. So I'm now convinced that the TARDIS took them there just to scar Donna for life for spilling coffee on her new console. xD

      It’s possible that, without the Doctor and Donna there for the beings to focus on, events might have happened differently.
      You’re right,though. It was clearly established that the beings needed fast processing to figure it out, and so it’s extremely unlikely that the Doctor was actually needed. Perhaps the Toymaker was able to interfere with the Tardis or its destination- he needed the Doctor otherwise occupied so he could set the stage to torment him (through harm to humanity) back on earth.

    I loved this and I love how perspectives are so different. I really appreciated the lighted corridor because for me that made it a whole lot scarier. It's like....if you take the bus at night or during the early morning hours in winter and everything is SO BRIGHT...you can see everyone's faces, notice every movement, you are expecting things to happen in the corner of your eye every second. Whereas when the lights are dimmed [which sadly only a few busses do where I live] I am always feeling quite safe and cosy. This half darkness almost acts like a blanket for me. And the episode had the same effect on me. Because it was bright everything felt that much larger and open...like things could happen any second and you won't be able to hide in the darkness so you can only hope you're a masterful runner [which I am not! So maybe that makes it extra scary for me XD].
    Btw. I've always loved it when Doctor Who confronts us with aliens from outside our universe where the laws of physics are different/do not apply. From the new series this episode instantly reminded me a of Midnight and Flatline, two of my absolute favorites! I had a blast with this one ^//^
    I have to admit, though, that they totally fooled me in the corridor scene! I legitimately thought the real Doctor was the fake Doctor and the real Donna was the fake one XD. It was done really well! Especially because the episode then _told_ me where my mistakes where in presuming so [like Donna couldn't have had all the Doctors memories because she led go of it in the last episode and the fact that the fake Doctor unfastened his tie but then couldn't preserve the fabric on the floor etc] I really felt like 10th during the 50th special constantly misreading Queen Elizabeth which was a fun experience! :D
    The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the pilot was Hayagriva. And than as the episode progressed I thought of Anubis, the protector of graves. Some species that inspired the images of our gods [which Doctor Who had also done a lot in the past, right?].
    I was a bit sad you didn't mention Bill there...her fate was the worst for me. That was just heart-breaking because she seemed much more...ripped out of her life than Clara for example was because she was basically running towards her demise from the moment Danny died ^^'.
    And last but not least: I am so freaking happy the Flux and The Timeless Child were mentioned! I stand behind my opinion that this narrative opens so many new doors for Doctor Who and it always makes me sad when people just dismiss the idea because they THINK it wouldn't conform with everything that had happened before [because for the most part it actually does if you really think about it and it's not like huge changes haven't been made in the past either. I am still more on the fence with the whole Time War narrative than I am with The Timeless Child for example - sorry RTD ^^' - but I can accept the decisions, love and enjoy the storylines nevertheless].
    Thanks to Christel, Tyrell and Juno! It was a pleasure to hear your thoughts and initial responses on this one :) See you next week~

    I think this is the same enemy the Doctor faces with Amy Pond; Prisoner Zero. At first I didnt even think about it but then I noticed things like the teeth and the changing of body type. Just like Prisoner Zero with the guy and the dog and the alien got the dog and human backwards? It would also make sense as to why no one knew the aliens had gotten on the ship since it uses vision perception (can only be seen in the corner of your eye). If its not it has to be a close cousin of the same kind.

  • @quintuscrinis8032
    @quintuscrinis8032 Před 7 měsíci +4

    For me it lacked the feel of an anniversary special, as did the Star Beast unfortunately. I enjoyed it as an episode of Doctoe Who bur as part of the celebrations for 60 years it missed something.
    And that could very easily have been fixed as well. The doctor admitted (and has in the past as well) struggling with his regret over events that have happened so why didn't the entities recreate some of those as part of reading the Doctor's thoughts and struggling to work out how to assign shape and context? (See how the Flesh stuggled to stabilise due to the influence of past regenerations).
    You could have had past and future faces both of doctors and comapnions as the entity tried to work out how to show this face. Both scaring the doctor with facing who they are and hammering home the question of "why did this face come back".

    Everyone's trying to make the name specifically horse-related and I'm just here thinking "Amari sounds nice", which is just something that popped into my head randomly. I can definitely imagine the Doctor saying "The dead spaceship pilot was Amari, too." when talking to more Amari. Idk, just doesn't sound as obnoxious as every horse-related name and still feels very Doctor Who to me.

    I thought this was a fantastic episode - a great blend of mystery, charm, emotional vulnerability while still including a little bit of silliness. I must say I preferred it over the first episode of the specials - while I enjoyed the vibe and the characters of the first, I did feel that some of it was a little rushed in order to re-establish the Doctor and Donna for the remainder of the specials, however this episode definitely benefited from their dynamic so in the end it was worth it.
