  • The idea with these quick 'How To' videos is for when you're stuck on the driveway and need quick access to find out how to do something quickly.
This video shows you how to remove the out of date phone cradle/holder in the centre console on a BMW X5 E70.
There is a blanking plate available from BMW but it's over £100, however I found a 3D printed solution to the issue, giving me loads of extra storage space. Watch my full video on that: • Got a BMW X5 E70? Then...

Fantastic! Great video. It's so easy to uninstall. Up until now I'd only found posts that said "cut the cable" - but this way it's done in 20 minutes.👍👍👍

Great tips and very helpful. But this can be made much easier by simply unscrewing the phone holder and cutting the wires. One is only a small co-axial, so just put a bit of tape over the end. The other is small five core. Just peel back the outer sheath and keep each wire separate and again tape up. You could put a blob of silicone on of you wanted to seal it fully. I didn't. Then just tuck the wire back in to the recess before covering. I made a simple card cover with folds in the right places. Then covered it with sticky back plastic (you could use vinyl wrap). Cheap and easy. Looks ok.

i thought about cutting the wires. did it throw any error codes after you cut it?

@@Mr.Rogers. No error codes and no issues since I carried this out.

I cut the wires today...and radio was looking for signal for 1min ...and my AUX is grayed out ... And SOS error appear... I believe I blew a fuse ... didn't investigate it yet ... :(

@@Sunsetime2 Maybe a wire touching somewhere or earthing. If you think about it logically, terminating each wire and isolating is no different to terminating each wire in a junction box. Just not as tidy. Obvious question but was all power off before you cut? Makes a difference.

Did you have any sound issues (i.e. no sound) after removing the phone cradle?

Not for me, all worked fine. Not sure if certain optioned cars have different setups though.

That link for the 3d print doesn't seem to work, is it still available?

I've just updated the link so it should now work, if not just search the original part number 51169115083 and it'll likely show up 👍

Where did you get the blanking plate please

I found that if you unscrew a 2mm allen bolt from the centre of the spindle, you can separate the "arm" from the "mounting plate" and re-attach the mounting plate to cover the hole - not as pretty as a blanking plate, but does the job...

I have another video on the blanking plate and it looks like the 3D printed version is no longer available. Genuine BMW Part Number is 51169115083 but it aint cheap!

Not heard of that issue before. Lots of guides on the BM forums and never heard that. Perhaps a snagged wire or issue if battery was disconnected? Hope you get it sorted.
