I'm one of those people who like 32x and 64x res packs. More detailed than 16x while still pixelated enough to fit MC's aesthetic. Its biggest problem, tho, is mod support. Even if you have the proper textures for all your mods, you'd need a LOT of RAM, and loading up the whole game would take ages.
Been using Misa's pack on vanilla MC since MC Alpha. It's one of the game's first texture packs, and it's still being updated to this day.

The crows/owls alone make that texture pack a must-have for my medieval pack, though it'd be cool to have it somehow act procedurally. Could an isometric 2D texture like that also work for a flying, moving mob?

It's actually from the FromSoftware's games like dark souls, bloodborne, demon's souls or elden ring. Elder Scrolls are from Bugthesda.

It might not matter if you’re talking about 1.20.2. Some mods are interchangeable between .1 and .2

1.20.1 is currently the preferred version of most modders. There are reasons for it.
And let's just be grateful that we even have mods at all. Almost all modders do them in their spare time and don't even get paid for it.
