@@CS-bd5of They still do it in my town sometimes, but most people stopped doing it because it's a waste of good rice. I don't like that tradition either, because my dad is a rice farmer and I grew up seeing how hard it is to produce rice. Millie on the other hand, probably hasn't witnessed this tradition so she obviously thought logically on how it is, again, a waste of good rice.

Throwing rice is a very important part of most Hindu weddings. Rice in general is an integral part of many Hindu customs & rituals. I assume that's because rice is the staple diet of the place where Hinduism originated (Indian subcontinent). Rice signifies wealth & prosperity in Hinduism. Similarly, rice also has significance in Buddhism, Jainism etc. All these religions are influenced by Asian culture. If anything, nothing is more Asian than including rice wherever you can lol
Idky they do it in America though since abrahamic religions are the majority there.
@@AB-ip2ct Makes sense, Millie is a Catholic after all. Although I think it moreso has to do with Philippine culture disliking food wastage in general. For a lot of Filipinos its a massive turnoff and red flag if you don't finish your meals, and it would be an understatement to say how much they LOVE rice in that country.
@@ghy_ I definitely understand the love for rice and wastage being a massive no. It's the same here. They say you shouldn't waste even a grain of rice & we get told stories with the same moral as well. The rice that is thrown at weddings is barely anything tbh it's not like they're throwing handfuls. I guess it's just how the culture has evolved here because rice is heavily intertwined with various aspects of life & is a symbol of auspiciousness. I never really put much thought into it tbh, but It's interesting when I think more deeply about it haha

In Spain we throw rice (obviously uncooked) to the newlyweds when they leave the church or the courthouse where they got married. The rice is thrown into the air to fall on the couple as if it were raining. It symbolized fertility, abundance and omens of prosperity. That is why handfuls of rice are thrown to couples after the "I do": to wish them a happy, long-lasting relationship with children :)

Weddings in general are far too extravagant and wasteful IMO, like if you thought rice being thrown was bad, imagine when the catering has like half of their food still left that they end up throwing out at the end lmao... I highkey respect people that have minimal impact/budget weddings because it's super unnecessary to throw such an expensive event for something that can be done in like an hour in vegas. That might be offensive to some people and I apologize for that, but I'm aromantic (no romantic attraction) so I guess my perspective is a little jaded on that front. I think one of the best weddings I've ever been to was this beautiful lesbian wedding where the couple got married in the middle of the woods. Like all they needed were blankets and pillows for people to sit on with a wooden arch and flower arrangements, it was so pretty. I think the best catering I've had at a wedding tbh was homemade Fried Ice Cream. They eventually ate all of it too or gave it away so minimal waste.

This is one of the most normal things in all of Sweden tho, it’s not really about religion here, tho it probably originates in that, but here it’s more of a tradition so rice is something I grew up with and was my first thought before even flowers

It's actually pretty interesting because burning the American flag in America as an American citizen isn't illegal as proclaimed by the US Supreme Court. It's protected under symbolic free speech, however local laws may be different elsewhere. It can lead to really interesting conversations as long as it is kept civil and open minded.

@@blackcrasanblade I'm not talking about a law that makes flag burning legal. I'm talking about the first amendment that is a part of the constitution. Under the first amendment, as decided by the US Supreme Court, it is legal to burn the US flag because it is symbolic free speech. I added the part about local laws because I know that while nationally it is legal, states rights can come into play when policing policies. For example, look at the legalization of weed in America.
I actually think it's something really amazing that in America, Americans decided that free speech is more important than a single flag. In many other countries that have major issues with free speech, they would never want someone to burn their flag. However, in America, we decided to be bigger than the cloth that represents our nation. We are bigger than it because America is everything that lives together across our great nation, trying together to survive, not just cloth however symbolic. The bonds that tie us together are much harder to burn than a single flag. The real America lies within its people. The flag is important, but so are the people who hail it, and even the ones who burn it. It's a really powerful sentiment.
