Rev. Kiamah, I don't know whether its me but listening to this beautiful and awesome Mom's story here and elsewhere, something keep popping up from within me.
Here, there is a point you asked Emily "were you running away(I too think so).Good money and good life can easily influence anyone. Secondly, what if upon informing the husband, maybe he was against her tour of duty. They couldn't agree maybe. She talks so passionately about John Hopkins well paying"Dollar" job!!(could this have been one of the causes of her family disintegration???. There is another point she said when she was driving back home on a rough stretch, she saw an old woman on the road-side at close look she realised it was her daughter, Dora....(could the couple been so much into their "good life" at the extent of the children's plight?). It is not good to judge anyone especially when you hardly know them that close. However, for the purpose of educating the public and or inspiring, we as human beings get concerned both for closure and for learning more.
Something else makes me think aloud. Outside the death of his mother and his brother that I am trying to connect the relevance to William's drinking habit, maybe there were much more that Emily is not bringing out. Just an after thought!! A Luo, Kisii or Luhya man is affirmed when they sire a son. Could the aspect of just daughters have contributed to his moment of shame or peer mockery maybe? Such silent but emotive subject is often kept under laps but real and devastating, on a lighter note though. She indicated the couple was generously endowed financially to spoil the kids left, right centre. Indeed, but daugters are often close to the father than the mother. I am trying to ask myself, none of the 4 kids could opt to stay back with the father, especially Murugi that I listened to her engaging on an intimate or direct sex things with her father live on camera. I thought the daughters real loved their father, not for "Dr" name sake but genuinely as blood kids. The revelation herein, speaks the direct opposite of the image her kids, especially Murugi portrays out there.
Rev. Carole, when husband or wife is a substance abuser, do you abandon them or work closely with the victim to win them back to normalcy?? While I find Emily's case odd, especially as a woman of God and one that has thrived in the medical field for years, I am left to wonder....but, nonetheless, its their life not mine.
Partying shot "each story has 3 sides , hers, his and the truth" I rest my case

sometimes we look at parents and we do what they do. However, as an adult if you decide to follow the stupid things that your parents did do not blame them. Blame yourself. You are an adult with a functioning brain. do whatever it takes to unlearn and unsee the bad things, the stupid things that your parents did. Also do not blame the dad since he was also a patient he equally needed help. something else do not classify people who drink as sinners and other people as holy or not sinners. Thats how you lose drunks because you classify them as different people. are we not all sinners
