  • A look how a crazy and over the top film with a complicated plot, use of multiple film genres, aliens, eccentric characters, a JetCar that's more of a truck, an over thruster, blue blaze irregulars and a watermelon became a cult classic!!!

I have a promo T-shirt for BB: Ancient Secrets and New Mysteries! I picked it up at a science fiction convention many years ago.
BTW, the in-universe explanation for why there's a watermelon in a vice is that it was part of an initiative by the Banzai Institute two help with world hunger and disaster recovery. They're engineered watermelons that are nutritionally complete for humans, with a rind that's impact resistant enough to survive being dropped by airplane but can still be easily sliced with a knife. The vice was a test of compression strength.

I was a Blue Blaze Irregular back in the 80's, and you know it was special not just because you were a fan but because of all the people who have never heard of BB or seen it.

You can find the explanation for the water melon in the novel by Earl Mac Rauch that the movie was based on.

I'm 56 and just a year ago I bought the book by Earl Mac Rauch because I was hoping it would clarify some of the storyline confusion (Rauch's book explains how another character will be killed off ... which is an informative companion piece to the bonus features on my DVD commentary where Buckaroo is discussed like a real person: a cross of Albert Einstein, a Zen Master(?), and ... Adam Ant (yes, Buckaroo was released in 1984😅)!? Buckaroo Banzai's Hong Kong Cavaliers is a 9 piece rock band consisting of Rawhide, Reno (the 'biographer' in the book...) the Swede, Perfect Tommy, Flyboy, Big Norse, Pecos and Pinky Carruthers (portrayed by Billy Vera of the #1 80's hit song At This Moment from Family Ties TV show with Michael J Fox ... yes, gotta luv the 80's...).
Part of the fun of watching the movie is figuring out what John Lithgow is saying because his accent is hilarious in its own right ... then some of the one liners make more sense allowing his crazed performance as Dr Lizardo/John Whorfin to become even funnier.
AND it should be worth pointing out if not for the Oscillation Overthruster there would not have been a Flux Capacitor (which was 'completed' a year later by Doc Brown, hmm, indeed)?
By the way Classically Bad Cinema great video.
P.S: The Jet car "truck" was/is really jet propulsed(!) and traveled 200 MPH.
