- Whether you’re a ‘Sunderland Til I Die’ fan or a bit nonchalant, football runs through the veins of Sunderland’s history…
In this video we’ll take a peek back in time to some of Sunderland AFC’s historic spots that hold a special place in many Rokerites’ hearts…
These terraced streets in Roker were full of supporters on match days, having walked across the Wearmouth Bridge to catch sight of some good football action! Flat caps and ties were the outfit of the day, with branded football shirts and fancy trainers not even being invented yet!

i'm the Litterpicker in the Roker area its a nice place glad to see it was looking semi clean in the video :) .
Amazing video. Keep them up.
Thank you! 😁
Thank you, I enjoyed a good look around. I never really was a football fan, but I grew up in the Seaburn Roker Area in the 60s and 70s it looks strange to see that the football ground is not where it was, my dad was a local policeman, and can often be seen on old videos, walking round the perimeter of the pitch during the match. One thing, I miss about Sunderland is Gelders pies I live in the north-east of Scotland now, and you just can’t get a decent mince pie 👍
I'm pleased you liked this video! I feel the opposite - it's more strange to me that the football ground was where the houses were instead of where the Stadium of Light is today 😅 I think you're spoilt for choice in Sunderland for pies, but I bet there's lots of tasty things in Scotland that can replace pies!
Just to add, this is an exceptional video well done
I was told by an old miner. That all the pits for miles around had shifts linking them. This a in case of emergency. So if needed a miner from south Shields was able to get out I say wear mouth if there was a collapse.
I didn't know that! That's a good idea!
No Porterfield Drive or Stokoe Road (to Wembley)? 😁
I went to a football match in 1969. At halftime I walked around the back of a stand to the other end and missed a goal. I didn't know the result until I got home and saw it on the telly. 😂 That was the only match I ever went to.
Hope you don't mind if I give you a tip for shooting your videos. There should be a stabilisation setting on your phone which will cancel out the bobbing motion while you're walking along. My videos would be unwatchable if I didn't have it turned on. 😁
Thank you for your feedback! I'm new to camera work so I'm pleased you've told me, I'll look into my settings and see if I can produce more streamlined videos 😊
@@northeastnostalgic5071 I had my phone for two years before I found out it had a stabilisation setting. 😁 Up until then I'd been using the stabilisation feature in my editing software which was a complete pain as I had to do it for each clip. 😛
Streets should have been named after the players of old.
Archibald Leitch not letch
I went to Roker Park only once in about 1985 but can recall the liniment smell coming from the dressing room, the working class energy and language and feel the character of the stadium. I went to the Stadium of light recently and through most of the corridors, stands, side rooms, executive boxes, lobby etc and it was soulless like a new build house, or comparing a traditional Sunday roast to a microwave meal. The only thing that impressed me was the pristine pitch. Maybe your foreign players will like it that's all that matters nowadays
