I discovered John Prine only 3 years ago, when he passed away. What a great artist he was: may he rest in peace. Thank you for this very nice tutorial about his fingerstyle picking style. Well done: Like 106
I'm happy that I wasn't the only one that didn't know about him until he passed. He was a fantastic story teller and love his guitar style. Listen to him now all of the time.
Dude, you are in-cred-i-ble! I've been playing John Prine's songs since 1975, incorrectly. I never had any training on how to play that finger style - I just made up my own style. It's gotten me this far, but it's nice to have someone finally show me how to play that finger style correctly. Many thanks!
Thanks, I subscribed! Merle Travis was great. He came up with this basic style using a thumb and index finger. Amazing. Takes great rhythm. You are a very good instructor.
As ever Brian, you're the best. I'm returning after having to work the Long Covid rheumytiz out of my fingers, this is going to be a fun way back to playing, a million thanks, stay well, good luck every day.
jes please .. anything on this style you played on the video - like this song or something like this with "12 bar bleus" in this style - which you great played on this wideo .. Thanks a lot (milion thimes) .. it helps mi sooo much to learn on my guitar ...best regards my friend...@@BrianBakerGuitarStudio

Hi Steve. I always start “Thats the way the world goes round” like this. I try to combine the melodies of that song with “In Spite of Ourselves” to creat an intro. Hopefully this helps.
Very entertaining fingerprinting from a very unlikely looking character...hmmm what does a guitar player look like. Hmm I have been napping and then found this. Very cool
Finally! I've watched about 10 different "how to pick like jp" videos, and none of them actually pick the way he did (thumb & index finger only). I even scrolled through comments, and yours is the first and only one that mentions his actual picking style. Kudos to you, and thank you!
I think it’s different for everyone. I started out by learning Chet Atkins music when I was young. Once you can train your thumb to play bass patterns automatically, things really start to open up.
@@BrianBakerGuitarStudio yes, it is different for everyone but I did not ask everyone I asked you specifically. Anyhow, I know someone had a Travis pick I can play dust in the wind, landslide, Julia and dear prudence by the Beatles also some Gordon Lightfoot Travispicking thanks for the video.

Excellent picking ..

Switched to the Fred Kelly picks for a try on your rec, but I don't really find a huge difference with the Dunlops, which are fine and a lot cheaper.
Thank you 🎸
Hi Ed. Thanks for watching.
Wild fimmer man
do you play G string when you are doing the C chord pattern.
It seems that you are only adding notes from high e and B string?

Good lesson Brian. Do you have tab…at least for the first part of the lesson. Thx. Cheers from AB.
Hi Steve. Thanks for watching. I unfortunately do not have a tab at the moment. When I make one I’ll let you know. Cheers from NB.

Thank you. Yes I teach lessons full time.
Which JP tune is this based on Brian, all the best from the UK. Great playing & teaching ❤

Reminds me of Merle Travis
Yes absolutely. You could use the Travis picking style in many John Prine songs.
Brian, Thank you for the great tutorial. What gauge thumb pick do you prefer?
Your welcome. Lately I’ve been liking a thumb pick made by Black Mountain. It’s comparable to a Dunlop 1mm.

Not bad at all. A little singing is also pleasing.
Thanks. It’s a fun song and style to play and sing.

Thanks Eric! In Spite Of Ourselves.
Song title would help!
You can play this style over many songs. Enjoy.
Sing more man it helps and you got a great voice
Thanks Christopher!
Oh I think John rules too
I missed the part aboutJohn Prine despite saying his name a lot
Thanks for watching! He’s in there. 😎
You do not use finger pics?
No finger picks but always a thumb pick. Sometimes players will grow out their nails or put fake ones on.
Wish it was as easy was it looks
Keep practicing John. It’s a fun style to learn.
Now teach us how to play like jj cale
Great idea! Stay tuned my friend. 😎
