Top 10 Feats That DO NOT Increase Your Damage in DnD 5E

  • In Dungeons and Dragons 5e, you can take feats instead of increasing your ability scores whenever you reach a level that allows you to do so. They're used to further customize and build your character in ways that you wouldn't be able to otherwise. Some can increase your effectiveness in combat by allowing you to bypass resistances when dealing damage, for instance, while other feats might be taken for roleplay and flavor purposes. In this video, we'll be going over feats that don't necessarily increase your damage output, but instead, provide more utility and variety to your characters as you progress.

    I once thought about curses and how they negatively affect your character, but I have found a curse that makes all projectiles be drawn towards a character, and considering that, the curse allows a monk to lower damage from projectiles if the entire party is around him. In that regard, I think a top 10 useful curses video would be very entertaining to watch.

    Observant is also a great feat with being able to increase your wisdom or intelligence by 1, increasing your passive perception by 5 and being able to understand what people are saying while whispering for gathering information and scouting which works especially well with a druid that shape shifts into a hawk.

      I had a druid with Observant. I was constantly using it to read lips to gather information, even just in human form. And combining this feat with proficiency in perception and main-stat wisdom (because casting mod) gave me a passive perception of 21, which was so nice to prevent ambushes.

      Start variant human, take observant, take a level of ranger with the sage background for 6 starting languages. Then take 6 levels of totem barb, 4th level take the linguist feat for 3 more languages and lvl 6 aspect of the eagle to see a mile even in dim light. So at level 7 you can read lips from a mile away in 9 languages!

    I think the best user of the Healer feat is as a Thief Rogue. It's a nonmagical item, so you can bonus action to heal someone while still attacking. A sort of sociopathic battlefield surgeon. Run up, shiv the goblin that was attacking your friend, then heal your friend. You are the Murder Mom, running around with bandaids and a knife.

      @smallolive Před rokem

      Agreed. I feel like it’s a pretty staple option, especially for str/dex half feats. It’s basically that or crusher/piercer/slasher. There are a few more Con options and a few species specific ones, but in general I think skill expert fills a critical role as a “great on anyone” option. At least till OneD&D makes everything a half feat.

    • @ADT1995
      @ADT1995 Před rokem

      If I've got an odd primary ability score I often take this feat regardless of class
      Yes most classes have a better half feat as far as combat goes, but it's a great way to add versatility.... Especially on a class where you don't really have to try that hard to be effective such as a cleric wizard or druid where you literally only have to care about one ability score for combat purposes.
      Skill challenges come up in the games I play in quite often though, we are a combat heavy table, but we also really enjoy the social and problem solving aspects, and most of us have been playing long enough where we don't feel like we really need to min-max for combat. Just cover our bases where we fill our role well, then branch into other things.

      I will attest to the awesomeness of Skill Expert.
      I played a grappling focused monk with Tavern Brawler and Skill Expert in Athletics in a one shot; he was less of a traditional Kung Fu monk and more of a big dumb guy who punches people, throws things around and wrestles ala Steve Reeves as Hercules. Thanks to having 18 Str and Skill Expert, he had +10 Athletics at level 5. He successfully grappled a shark to submission while the rest of the party swam by unmolested. It was pretty great.

    Heavy armor master is really underrated. Most games don’t go past 10th level. Most individual hits from those 3 damage types tend to be low, capping out at around maybe 20-30 damage-which means HAM still gives an effective 15-10% damage reduction.

  • @AgentForest
    @AgentForest Před rokem +3

    Chef also grants that proficiency with cooking utensils. Whenever you take a short rest, you can make a meal with cooking tools that you're proficient with, granting anyone during that short rest who spends hit dice one additional hitpoint of healing for each hit die spent.
    This means that a Bard with the Chef feat and Song of Rest would heal someone who spent 1 hit die 2d8+1 in healing. If someone spent six hit dice, they'd regain 2d8+6 in addition to their hit die healing. If you also had the Healer feat, you could also be doing that before a short rest. If you're in a party/group that tends to take lots of short rests, it's incredibly powerful.

    I used gift of the metallic dragon recently in two one shots. One was a level 13 one shot and the other was a level 20. I was a ranger for one and a arcane trickster rogue for the other. This feat was amazing to use for both. I used it for the level 13 one when getting in close with the barbarian after the cleric/warlock blinded the rest of the enemies. Between the silvery barbs and the healing I was able to utilize this quite well, and for those rounds I didn’t need to utilize silvery barbs I used my reaction for the wings for my party members. As for the level 20, I used steel wind strike, ended next to the Paladin, had my dragon (I’m a drakewarden) go to opposite side of the enemy, utilize their lightning breath attack, and then, before my turn came again, used the protective wings to protect the paladin from the crit from the enemy, keeping him on his feet. Then I got hit that round, and when I disengaged (some rogue levels) I cast cure wounds at a high level on the paladin before leaving the area. This kept the paladin up long enough for him to make some very critical decisions that won us the over all encounter. It also freed up the cleric that turn to continue other spells that were helping us win so they didn’t have to waste an attack on healing instead. I ended up very hurt by the end but we won and I’m happy about it. My move also finally broke through the no damage mechanic of the bbeg. Basically these are my examples of how well the gift of the metallic dragon can be utilized in combat, even for rogues and typically long range characters. It’s basically extra shields and I also recommend it for wizards too.

    I'd actually like to give shout outs to the Dual Wielder feat, on account of my recent experimentation with it and Barbarian. Some days you just don't wanna use GWM or Sentinel and Dual Wielder isn't an awful alternative for keeping damage, boosting AC, and adding some fun visual flare. Plus I realized that with Dual Wielder and the two weapon fighting fighting style the only restriction to your two weapon fighting is that the weapon isnt two handed and its something you're proficient in... including the Beast Barbarian's Form of the Beast Weapons like your Bite or Tail. Two-weapon fighting doesn't care about *which* weapon you use when you use that bonus action, just that you do. Not quite a non-damage focused feat, but I think its kinda neat. :)

    Disagreed with some here who made the list. Here's 10 which i think should've made the list:
    1. feytouched (and to a lesser extent shadowtouched): arguably the best half-feat in the game. access to misty step, an asi and a good 1st level spell of your choice (hex, command, dissonant whispers, etc) is a great benefit. big miss on this list.
    2. telekinetic: another great half feat. gives classes without a good use of their bonus action such as wizards a useful option. awesome for repositioning allies or grating enemies through entry spells like spike growth.
    3. skill expert: another good half feat. notice a trend? typically the combat skill users arent bards, rangers and rogues. these are typically barbs and fighters who'd have to multiclass to pick up expertise for athletics. this feat eliminates that multiclass need and adds an asi.
    4. metamagic adept: metamagic is excellent on any spellcaster. quicken spell opens up spell combos, transmute spell allows you to circumvent resistance and subtle spell allows outside of combat casting/avoiding counterspell. this is great to add on any spellcaster's repertoire or if using metamagic extensively, reduces the level dip into sorcerer to level 2.
    5. crusher: another good half feat. great for knocking enemies into the air for prone and some dmg if you have extra forced movement (like repelling blast) while also rounding out an odd asi. for battlemasters, it's a great combo with lunging attack (or playing a bugbear) to trigger brace.
    6. elven accuracy: another good half feat. you may think this increases dmg, but it does it indirectly. it increases accuracy while adding an asi. must-have for crit fisher builds.
    7. mobile: great feat for melee characters to minimize wasting the 1st turn dashing while being essential in skirmisher builds that utilize booming blade. also good to increase grappler's drag distance.
    8. warcaster: just like resilient con, great for protecting concentration while also allowing you to hold a focus/weapon and shield at the same time thus "increasing" your ac. excellent to combo with command/dissonant whispers too.
    9. dragon fear: another good half feat. excellent on sorcerers to "double control" via quicken spell. any class with extra attack can use it too to add some control to their action.
    10. eldritch adept: great way for ranged attackers to get misty visions. helps out warlock dippers round out their invocation load out. pick up devil sight for melee darkness users.
    bonus. lucky: considered to be one of the best feats in the game but didnt make the list. wow. reroll atk rolls, saves or ability checks 3x a day. close your eyes for super advantage on atk rolls.

      Reading up on it, Ritual caster is not nearly as good as you think. Trying to learn a wizard spell from a scroll requires a pretty high intelligence (arcana) check. So even if you pick one of the other ritual classes, if the spell is on the wizard list, you are probably just wasting the scroll if you are not an intelligence caster with proficiency in arcana.

      Magic Initiate for their own class spells is useful for Bard, Ranger, Sorcerer, Warlock, Eldritch Knight Fighter, and Arcane Trickster Rogue, because you get extra spells that you can use spell slots on, as well as once per day for free.
      And the Bard can ritually cast a Bard ritual spell that they learn from Magic Initiate. So a Bard could take Magic Initiate: Warlock to get Eldritch Blast/Chill Touch and Mage Hand. Add in Prestidigitation and Minor Illusion and you have a well rounded Bard for the stage or adventure. Take Unseen Servant as the 1st level spell and use it as a stage hand or on the adventure. Since it is on the Bard spell list, you can cast it with slots or as a ritual spell. Then you have Cure Wounds/Healing Word and one other 1st level spell for your Bard.
      Cleric, Druid, Paladin and Wizard can do the same, but must also prepare the Magic Initiate spell from their list to use spell slots on it.

I remember getting a ton of use out of it as a Fighter in a 2 player one-shot, where every time we were low on health and got to a relatively safe part, my stoic fighter would just plop down, pull out her portable tea set, and pop a baby aspirin from the Healer's Kit into each cup as a way to say "we're taking a short rest now, no questions." Even without using the feat in combat, an extra 20-25 extra HP per player per short rest without using any hit dice was invaluable in making it through the entire dungeon safely.

    I wouldn't have put anything that has half an ASI because it technically can increase your damage if it pushes the stat passed a threshold, other than maybe Con. Also most feats don't actually increase your damage: Sentinel doesn't, War Caster doesn't, Crossbow Expert doesn't unless you count bonus actions or different kinds of opportunity attacks as damage increases(they aren't increases as much as more attempts in my opinion). I understand the intent was to highlight other feats and their utility that do more than make fight end quicker.

    Athlete, I think, is pretty underrated. The ability to climb benefits the Z-plane. You know what else is an S-tier ability that cares about Z-planes? Flying.
    This feat alone opens up more visuals upwards than flight because you begin to ask yourself, "Can I climb it?"
    Mages who take this feat are unique in that, they're not as frail as you'd imagine. Climb up, gain some vantage in partial or even full cover. Normies would be stuck climbing at half speed.

    • @MrMrtvozornik
      @MrMrtvozornik Před 9 měsíci

      I mean, it would make sense if campaign is set in heavily vertical space, but unless your DM loves using verticality you're basically going to be a weird mage asking "Is there anywhere I can climb for cover?" more than rogue asks for advantage, which really could be done more efficiently with just careful positioning behind cover. It really comes down to opportunity costs, it's not that you can't use it with some imagination, it's just that you're not taking another feat. But then again, if you're frustrated with certain feats being useless, just homebrew it, if nothing pops to mind add a half of ASI and have other effects be just a bonus, so they can fight the full ASI competitively.

    I dont see how "making more and more attacks" reduces the usefulness of Heavy Armor Master. Yes, it is true the attacks are more likely to be magical. But as often, there are a lot of non-magical attacks you have to wade through before getting to the BBEG.
    But at low levels, a Variant Human w/Heavy Armor Master makes a fun tank!

    I am keen to the prodigy feat. But i know 100% it isn't the best. For one it's restricted to humans, half-elves, and half orcs and doesn't give an ASI.
    However it gives a skill proficiency, a tool proficiency, a language, and give any one of proficient skills expertise.
    The usefulness does vary campaign to campaign, but giving yourself expertise in perception or stealth regardless of your class will always be good. The language could be handy if you're going to places where people might not speak common, or maybe your character can suddenly start to understand an ancient draconic or abyssal artifact and learn how to use it or warn the party of its danger. Tools vary DM to DM and could either assist you greatly, or just fall flat and do nothing.

    Ehh.... the number of feats that increase damage are actually less in number than the ones that do. That said, here are two that aren't on this list:
    Metabollic Control is a Unearthed Arcana feat for psionics that allows a character to short rest as a bonus action. Technically it also can be used to remove the need to eat, but that's largely insignificant compared to instant short rest.
    Eldritch Adept is out of Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and it allows spellcasters of any flavor to take Worlock Invocations. Technically this is not damage increasing, since there's lots of non-damage increasing Invocations; it's opening up a class feature to everyone with a spellcasting ability.

    Chef doesn't belong on the list. Temporary hp are so easy to get, and this is one of the worst ways. You'll rarely affect the max number of creatures because so many will have other options. Feats are too valuable to even factor in their flavor potential.

      2) temp hp doesnt stack, so if the creature has an option for other forms of temp hp, they are going to go for the better option. which wont always be chef.
      3) they take the value of a feat in doing other things over the flavor, because feats are so rare.

    doubt about this list from an optimization perspective,
    Defensive duelist is really not great, it eats your reaction and requires finesse, rogues and monks, the classes that are most likely to go melee finesse, needs extra defenses already need to spend their reactions a lot for things like the rogues half damage and out of turn sneak attack, and the monk grab projectile and others,
    Overall its mostly a trap.
    Chef is a lot of flavor for sure, however the amount of stats it grants are simply sad, inspiring leader is way better, and its not even on this list.
