35028 "Clan Line" speeds west with the 'Belmond British Pullman' 19/05/2021

- The drought of mainline steam for the south west came to an end in spectacular fashion, as BR(S) Rebuilt 'Merchant Navy' Class - 35028 "Clan Line" sped to the west, working a 'Belmond British Pullman' service.
The close relationship between Belmond and the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society - owners of 35028 - ensured that "Clan Line" would be the star traction for Belmond's tour to the west. Starting out of London Victoria, the tour worked to Reading via Feltham and Bracknell, before ropming down the Great Western Mainline through Swindon and Bath to Bristol - and returning via the same route. The tour marked 35028's first public revenue earning service, since the beginning on the pandemic.
The cameras started out on Whitehall Lane, just south of Egham, catching the Rebuilt 'Merchant Navy' in full flight heading for Virginia Water. Scarpering to the west, 35028 is seen bursting out of Twerton Tunnel on the final furlong of the outbound run to Bristol. For the return leg, under a strong afternoon sun, the cameras caught "Clan Line" striding up the 1-in-120 gradient on entry to Middle Hill Tunnel.

Lovely countryside and a powerful reminder of times past. What a beautiful consist, headed by an immaculate example of dedication and preservation ‘against the odds’. Thank goodness such dedicated people invested their time, money and love in preserving such a glimpse of the era of steam. And a big thank you for sharing your recording for those who missed it.
The Merchant Navies were the most modern express steam locos having been rebuilt since 1956 and their performance speaks for itself.

My father Charlie Robbins, drove her back in the 80’s out of Marylebone, along with others. He drove a lot of the steam specials back then.
