It's actually a bit more complicated than Michael said. If you have half of a $100 note, you can exchange it at a treasury type institution for $50. But you can't just use it at the shop.

About that money thing... that's so cool. In America when a bill is cut in half or alot is missing, it becomes... WORTHLESS. You can bring it to the bank and they'll exchange it but you have to have all the pieces.
Yeah, in Aus you still have to take it to the bank, but if you don't have all the pieces, they pay you for the part(s) you have (within certain limits).
In Germany, and I guess all other Euro countries you get the full value if more than 50% of the bill is left

Also, regarding the dollar thing. As far as I know, here in the states a bank note has full value as long as at least 3/4 of it is intact, but if more than that is gone then it loses its face value. (I could be wrong, though, since it was something I was told when I was a little kid.)

@@theninjas2870 Can't speak for the US, but here in Aus there are defined rules on how to make fake notes that won't get you in trouble (printing not-negotiable all over them seems to be pretty universal though). As far as copying notes for illustrative/educational purposes goes* you need to enlarge the copy to over 120% or shrink to under 80% so it is obviously the wrong size. Working in a film school now, I can also add only printing one side of the money to be acceptable.
I would have guessed that only printing half the note would probably pass too, but with the fact (fact - yes, I checked: Slazo is educational!) Slazo pointed out about cashing in partial notes, it is likely my guess in that instance would be a big fat wrong!
*I used to be a primary school teacher before I realised I didn't like kids much - don't hate them, just don't like them enough to be a good teacher which is unfair on them, as well as making me miserable.
