  • This is how I visualize the different areas of my skateboard. I learned this from Zack Glenn, who'd draw the areas on his board, two decades ago. I've done it mentally ever since, and my skateboarding has improved so much.
    The tutorial begins at 1:26.
    Let me know which tricks you’d like to learn in the comments. Thanks for watching.

    Your in depth analysis is truly amazing. In my opinion every skater out there , no matter what skill level could take something away from your lessons. I’ve skated for a looong time and have seen many “skate tip” style vids etc.
    Yours is straight up among the best. Don’t stop with this content.

      Thank you so much! I appreciate your words. I try my best to bring value. Growing up around musicians, I took away the sense that you’re either learning or stagnating. I try to infuse my tips with this sensibility. I will keep on trying to be useful to this community, as long as I feel I have relevant experience to offer 👊🏾

    In terms of learning, I always look at my feet. So, if you’re having trouble learning how to ride straight, look at how spaced out your feet are in relation to the edge of your board. More specifically, your toes. Over time, you’ll naturally develop muscle memory and (build) muscle.
    This is why it is so significant to dedicate yourself to learning switch. As tedious and confusing as it is, these are the foundations and, if you don’t have the foundations down, you won’t progress - i.e, you need to spend hours and months pushing before you attempt tricks.

    Norman, thank you for all your videos. I tried out popping Ollies from the circle instead of having the edge of my foot right on the tail and my board stayed on my feet better and the pop was super high. I am wondering if that helped my center of gravity better instead of having my foot on the edge. Thanks for all your videos. They are super helpful. And I agree with you, I see skateboarding as a sport and exercise as well as a culture. Thanks! Tommy

    Hey Norman! I greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I have a question about technique that I believe to be crucial but have never heard anyone talk about it at all (so maybe it isn't).
    It seems to me that it is key for many tricks to stand as parallell to the board as you dare to -completely sideways that is. This would make it easier to make an ollie, for example, be directed exactly straight in the direction you're going.
    This of course goes against our natural instinct for how to land any jump safely -with one foot far forward and with the whole body facing forward. The extreme opposite of that would be to land completely sideways with our feet close together -this would make us simply topple over and land on a shoulder or the side of the head (not good).
    In my struggle to learn 3-flips and also to do ollies straight into banks I think this is a major obstacle for me. I'm not willing to stay parallell to the board and I tend to lean back and rocket my ollies without much control. I see many great skateboarders fall comfortably on their sides and slide several feet on the ground, but I'm not sure if that's possible on anything other than in the smoothest skateparks (not a feature of my local skatepark).
    Would love to hear your thoughts on the matter!

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the comment. I must’ve mentioned this before. It’s something I stress heavily, with my students. I like to imagine there’s a toothpick, going through me and into the deck. Like a double-decker sandwich.
      Banks are tough. A lot to do with commitment. It’s important to start into mellow ones. Then you’ll have an easier time committing to the steeps.

    • @Ronnie.Ericsson
      @Ronnie.Ericsson Před rokem

      @@NormanWoods I guess it's much about overcoming the fear step by step just like with every other aspect of skateboarding. I have seen you explain staying centered over the board, but I don't believe I've ever seen even a how-to-ollie tutorial ever mention how rotated or straight the front foot and upper body should optimally be when just doing ollies on flat ground or down drops.
      Does it seem to come naturally for your students to think "now I have to switch to riding completely sideways -only my head should point in the direction I'm moving" when they are learning rolling ollies?

    Hello quick question I asked on another video so you ride loose trucks or tight trucks

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  Před rokem

      Medium. I used to ride extremely loose. But the wheel bite became an issue. Switched to medium, and it helped with that, and being able to pop high consistently. Plus, my boards feel snappy longer.

    • @ryguy8599
      @ryguy8599 Před rokem +1

      Thanks for letting me know cause I ride really loose but my goal is to have super high Ollie’s like you. I feel like if a tighten my board It can definitely help with my goal but I also didn’t want to lose the control I’ve gain from riding loose so see what you ride will help me decide

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  Před rokem +1

      @@ryguy8599 you’re welcome. Yes, the loser trucks make it tougher to pop high. Mainly because you have to stabilize the board, as you crouch down, which takes some of the energy away from your Ollie. Medium to tight trucks are much easier to pop.
