  • Danny, is a Cuban immigrant. He grew up with multiple cultural identities because of the richness and cultural diversity of Boyle Heights. It allowed him to be Cuban, made him Mexican, African-American, and made him understand Jewish, Russians and German people, and with gusto recalls how "only in Boyle Heights can you find Black Beans with Chile in it"!
Danny's story recounts how the cultural diverse background and integration of Boyle Heights enriched his life and enhances his work as a Professor of Music at Whittier College. Danny's talk is a celebration and a tribute of how his neighborhood gave him the attitude and drive to persevere, excel, and thrive as a football player at USC, while earning his Music degree and allowed him to research the music that he grew up with -- Jazz, Latin Jazz, Ranchera, R & B, Afro Cuban at UCLA; and now as Professor teaches European classical music and the music of Latino and Urban culture, side by side.
Danny's affirms the importance of going back to give back. In his case, to help children follow their path of music to blossom into the careers of their choice.
Professor Danilo Lozano of Whittier College, is a two-time Grammy Award-winning flautist and music professor. A founding member of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Lozano is best known for his work with Latin jazz and charanga music. He has performed with some of the greatest artists in the genre, including Celia Cruz, Poncho Sanchez, Latin Side All Stars, Israel Lopez "Cachao," and was a featured artist on the soundtrack for Andy Garcia's film The Lost City. Lozano continues to perform regularly in both Los Angeles and across the country. Last summer, he was a featured artist for the Pasadena Orchestra's Clásica -- "Las Raíces de la Música" concert series and the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Idaho. Moreover, he recently organized a new series at Whittier that brings to campus well-known artists for an intimate performance and conversation.

My wife won a dinner during a fundraiser at Broakoaks, the elementary school on the Whittier College campus. Maestro Lazona and his lovely wife played for us during our dinner. They quickly became our guests during the dinner. His life is an inspiration! We should have paid double for this man's company alone. Maestro Lozano and his wife provided us an unforgettable night. He is an inspiration. He didn't hurt we are a USC family, too. 😃😂 Thank you, thank you thank you, Maestro Lozano!

I only meet Danny once when he was at USC. He was extremely charismatic. He told me this story at his house in 77ish. Your got understand he was smart, athletic...28 in legs... no way a flute player. I left with his friend louis..who introduced us... and went down the street to tepeyac thinking what ever he does he will be the best. Every time I go by his house on my way to eat or Klubnikins on Lorena st wonder what had happened to him. Glad to see he speaks of the real Boyle heights with pride.
