  • In the alternate universe, Olivia and the Fringe Division investigate weird accidents with casualties apparently with no connection except ballpoint pens found on the spots. But when Olivia sees the freak Milo, she suspects that he might be the responsible. Olivia and Charlie investigates and soon they follow a lead to a hospital where they learn what happened to Milo.

      I always think something like that when I watched things like Monk. He always figures it out and tells what happened, and he's right. But unless they admit to it they would probably still get away with it. Like it's a great story but it's almost always just him piecing together random clues and guessing what happened. Any good lawyer would point out there's no real evidence supporting what he said happened.

    It's a fascinating episode, but it doesn't really hold up under scrutiny. Olivia knows this guy is the mastermind because he "looks suspicious"? He's guilty of premeditated murder because he... placed a couple of pens around the place?
    Either Milo is the absolute worst at staying cool under police pressure and delivers a confirming confession to bolster the case or this case would get thrown out of court in a heartbeat. How is it more his fault for the murder than the artist's fault for picking up the pen, or the bus driver for speeding through a red light?

      Once you get a pattern of behavior in wich a person decide to manipulate something bad to happen through a third act you can blame him more than the people he decides to manipulate. You can clearly proof that the same guy placed a pen in various situations that happened to end bad because of this action. he is not blamed for placing pens but for manipulation that caused death or harm to others, being blamed for premeditated murder, its just like telling a kid to turn a gas valve and turn the light on, the kid killed himself, but i fundamentally killed the kid.
      Theres a whole fictional context that insinuates he is capable of doing what he is being accused of doing, so its not as hard as it seems to proof it, you can also track him down and proof if he was present in every situation.
      She dont know its him and he dont just looks suspicious, he literally have a chalk tick in his hand when he is calculating, while their suspect is assumed a somewhat genius in math, and he is doing it while everyone is shocked because the disaster scene, this both actions putt he in a possible suspect list, even if he was not the one, he for sure was the one that should get investigated first, also once she start thinking he is the one, and runs to get him, he just throw a bike out of the bridge for no clear reason, and it helps him in the future. Its not like everyone is doing this exact same actions that their suspect would do, i would get pissed if she runs towards him and cuff the person near him, this dude is suspicious in person and a clear caricature of their suspect. Theres a whole context that guide she to think its him, thats more than "he looks weird and nervous".
      Also theres a whole fictional paranormal government group that investigate this kind of exotic happenings, why proving that something exotic is happening i so hard to you, if they already have a whole system to catalog and control it, they already assume paranormal things happen often, why a judge would assume a math and pattern genius is a funny impossible thing if given bare minimum enough proof.

      One of her many abilities is that she is an empath. since she's currently super charged with cortexephan or however it's spelled she has amplified abilities like the other children who had been experimented on. In her case they presented in ways for her to escape danger. her stepfather was abusive so she learned as a child to read people real well and run away. hence when her powers manifested she was able to identify people's feelings and motives. and the running away part is what gave her the ability to jump universes. As for the prosecution this is the alternate universe which has been ravaged due to the tear in the universe walter created. walternate as a result has almost unrestrained power when it comes when it comes to dealing with these kinds of cases. it wouldn't go to normal court if it even went to court. and if it did go to court these are people who live in a world with shapeshifters, entire spots of the earth blinking out of existence, random stuff from other universes blinking into existence, people from the other universe being drawn in and merging with them and driving them insane. someone who could manipulate and orchestrate events to their end may not be too much of a stretch for them to believe even if they couldn't comprehend it.

    To all who have not watched the series and asked about the "thin air zone": This episode, like some others, took place in an alternate reality. Here the opening of a gateway between our and this world (what is become clear during the series) destroyed parts of the earth, led to many dimensional anomalies like the "thin air areas" and other, dangerous places. Also the people there are (of course) hostile to any visitors from our reality. Olivia is not remembering to originate from our universe - but also didn't know about the dangers of the anomalies.

    The funniest thing is that none of this requires doing actual maths, i.e. actively solving formulas in your head or crunching numbers. It's the exact same thing as trying to cage the ball - your brain quickly estimates the angle and required strength to make the throw, often including various factors such as the wind, the people who are trying to stop the ball etc, but nobody calls that process "maths". This is exactly what the guy in the movie does, but it's much more complex and involves many more variables. It surely requires extraordinarily high IQ, but forcefully associating it with mats is just comical.

    • @Badartist888
      @Badartist888 Před 4 měsíci +2

      I don't know about a high IQ but it does require very high motor skills and spacial reasoning. While the latter is on the test it doesn't really test it in the same way as real world events and sports and the like. One of the best guys with a football here in Aussie Rules was Shane Crawford. He was very often the butt of stupid jokes on TV and the like (which he always took in good natured fun) and he did not come across as bright. But when you worked out how he could follow an odd shaped ball and 20 players in his head you saw his particular type of genius.
      I know I'm being a bit pedantic but he is my example of why IQ is flawed. Specifically that it is weighted to boost the IQ of the people who invented the test rather than testing for more general types of intelligence.

    • @anatolydyatlov963
      @anatolydyatlov963 Před 4 měsíci

      @@Badartist888 Yep, very good point! I was too quick to label it as IQ, and you're definitely right in saying that the common perception of what IQ means and how it's measured is very limiting. I think it's more related to the general information processing abilities - some brains are much better at running simulations of reality than others.

    It's one thing with an anthology series like The Outer Limits but trying to briefly sum up where the highly serialized story was in early season 3 of Fringe... there's no way it's _not_ gonna sound like a big, convoluted mess.
    You have to include _so_ many details that aren't going to lead to anything within this particular episode just to understand what is going on in the episode... and you're getting some of them wrong. "Faux-livia" was what the people in the prime universe nicknamed the Olivia from the alternate universe, not the other way around. They didn't have a nickname for _our_ Olivia while she was stuck in the alternate universe. And we don't even see "Faux-livia" in this episode, so it's kind of moot anyway.

    I remember this episode of 'Fringe'. If I remember correctly, this episode mostly takes place in an alternate/parallel universe with an alternate/parallel 'Fringe' department

    Genuine question, as someone autistic at least i prefer to not have people refer to me as someone who “suffers” with ASD, anyone else who agrees? I just thought of this cuz thats like the first thing said in this video

    This is the greatest sci-fi show of all time. I’ve watched it more then 10x. Every season. I highly recommend watching. The last 2 seasons were a bit wacky but great nonetheless. 👌🏾

      Unfortunately they had to work with much more limited resources for those seasons as the show's budget was severely cut.
      For the last season, their budget was almost completely decimated and they rushed to tell the story they wanted to tell with very limited resources.
      I still think the ending was amazing though.
      Up until a few years ago, I would have agreed with you that it is the greatest sci-fi show of all time, but for me that spot has since been taken over by The Expanse ;-)
