My first wife, rest her soul, and I were nearly drawn into this cult. They teach things that are CLEARLY against the Bible. Such as Mary WAS NOT a virgin even though God said so. They teach that there were 4 other people crucified with Jesus, not two. And the list goes on and on. And when we made it clear that we were going to look for another church, within 15 minutes they had a team at the door. At one point they told my wife she needed to shut up because I was the man of the house (they had me pegged as the weaker one). I said "Yes I am...NOW GET OUT! Nobody talks to my wife that way!"

I was with the ministry for ten years. I was released from the holds of religion, taught to research the bible for myself. I was not told how to believe. After Dr. Weiwille died it became to religious for me and I left. I was never brain washed, sleep deprived or made to go without food and water. People make stuff up. Deprograming as was done to this girl is however brain washing.

I was a member of the way in U.K. what they tought was ,in many ways spot on,and biblicly accurate even though sometimes went against The Established Christian teachings, They taught that as Jesus said, that the word should interpret itself and compared against itself , Precept against Precept, There is no doubt they had some things very wrong, as do all denominations, and that power had corrupted the leadership both here and USA. Its very structure, both blinded and and fed the weaknesses of leadership at every level and fear sometimes stopped aand prevented them from questioning the teachings. I am gratefull to the way having taught me to read the word for myself and to check out and challenge my thoughts and beliefs by what the word itself says, The Bible is the yardstick to use, always.

I was raised in the ministry. My father was a twig leader and assistant branch leader. I remember being like any other kid. Of course, I attended fellowship and my parents encouraged my education. Their downfall. I left the ministry. I never attended fellowship or any church service again. Yes, I tried other churches, but they all had the same pitfalls and delusion. Years later, I gained enough confidence to out myself as an atheist. There seems to be a conflict in opinions on this site. Are The Way dangerous? Simply put, no! There are much larger churches with extensive infrastructures that are motivated in recruiting for their coffers. If you have confidence in yourself, no church can suck you in. Educate yourself. Don't get educated by any church or Christian/any other religion's University or College. Get a secular education and learn to research for yourself. Watch better television. The show "Cosmos" will give you the correct cosmic perspective.
FYI- I still talk with my parents and everyone I still come in contact with in The Way are extremely positive with me and their are no hard feelings.

They welcome anybody, and you are free to leave any time you want. However if you disagree with the leadership's teaching or directives, you will be pressured to agree or be quiet or leave.

I bought a nice Bible and really-good concordance. That’s all.
I don’t remember how much PFAL cost, but it wasn’t a lot.
I ended up making a best friend at that class. We, later, went to university together and majored on nursing.
We then worked at the same hospital.
I am aware that some shady things happened at levels far-higher than we ever were, but I was never isolated from my family, job, or studies.

OV2- I totally agree. "You know who" needs to be totally ignored. The Way may not be as dead as the dodo, but the Way is a shell of it's former self and is completely non-threatening. No one should waste their time bashing the Way. There are other theistic organizations that deserve attention. Example: there are nutjobs out there trying to get I.D. taught alongside legitimate science. That really deserves attention.

As someone who was in the Way Corps at the Rome City campus, I find this video sadly laughable. I no longer fellowship with the ministry; but I love a lot of people who still do. The "weapons training" consisted of a single afternoon. It was more or less exposure to experience. I served in the military; so I know what weapons training is. There was a lot of peer pressure in the ministry. It is more authoritarian than most groups; but I wouldn't classify it as being anywhere near as dangerous as Jim Jones! The ministry isn't sexually loose any more. They now teach abstinence before marriage; and adultery is openly taught as a sin. Doctrinally, TWI differs from mainstream Christianity in denying the Trinity, believing Jesus to be God's son through divine conception and a sinless human. Most of their other doctrinal stances can be found somewhere in regular Christian circles. The group is fundamentalist in its approach to the Bible. There are worse places one could go. In many ways, I'm thankful for the time I spent with the ministry (over 2 decades). There was a mixture of good, bad, and ugly. I thank God for the good; and I thank Him for the lessons learned from the bad and the ugly. Obviously, I believe I belong elsewhere. I decided to comment because I believe accuracy is important. There are mainstream churches who are every bit as manipulative as TWI. If you're an independent thinker, you probably won't fit in well; but they aren't going to turn anyone into a mindless zombie. A hyper committed follower, perhaps; but they stop short of mindless zombies.

My parents left in the 80’s. My mom even ran classes for Cuban refugees in Miami back then because she spoke Spanish. My dad joined later and they met through The Way. They take the general teachings to heart, but the real problem is people and their lust for power. This is why huge mega churches are mocked and ridiculed (I usually don’t listen to hardcore atheist critics, because they tend to attack the religion itself and don’t focus the core problems the particular sect is making). Objectively speaking, it should have been shut down when VPW was exposed.
My family doesn’t believe in mandatory tithing, and prefer the small, intimate fellowships, even if it’s only 2-3 people that week. It opens discussion and personal prayer sessions.
I honestly think The Way had potential to be a force for good when it first started out, but the inner circle was (and is) corrupted by their own arrogance. And that’s the least harsh WAY I could have put it.

I was raised in this ministry. Born in the 80's and my father was a twig-leader (fellowship coordinator as they are now known) during the 90's at the height of the Martindale era. I remember being bossed around like a soldier and forced to have the house perfectly clean for fellowship (3 times a week) that I was also forced to attend and take part in creepy rituals that I felt uncomfortable with.
My dad used to call me faggy and and had really bad anger management problems. He would always lay guilt trips on me and my brother/sister if we misbehaved saying things like "How am I supposed to run a twig if I can't run a family" as if it was our fault that he had all the added stress of operating the fellowship. I was forced to attend their classes and anytime I got in trouble my father would give some long impersonal lecture on the bible.
When Martindale had his shit hit the fan they told us not to look into it, but I did. They also told me to stop using the internet to discuss religion with other people, but I didn't follow their orders. Eventually I went to hq to go on staff (to make my parents happy) but I got spied on, lied to, alienated, isolated and finally harassed until I quit my job and left the ministry for good.
Anyone who is still in or is thinking about joining or taking a class, don't. Save yourself the headache and just learn textual criticism and concordance-dependent methods of studying the Bible.

I have a family in my neighborhood who run Way meetings in their home. They aren't only moral, they're cool. Very rare in the Christian community.
What I find entertaining is Christians who calls themselves "spiritual or "in a relationship with jesus" or being "christ like" and they try to shy from the religious label. With just a few questions you find they are the most religious of all.
The Way is not boogy men. Alas, you are correct NS0911. Christianity always has been and always will be about the money and trying to usurp power over people.

The fact is that Dawkins is being taken out of context here; he was speaking of a hypothetical Jesus, in the event that he actually did exist. He has never gone on record as to believing that the man existed as an historical figure or not. Like most atheists, he probably believes that there is no concrete evidence that the man existed that pre-dates his death. Almost all "evidence" is anecdotal, and dates to decades or even centuries after his supposed death.

I see comments about the Trinity here. We don't see the word Trinity in our Bibles do we? However we do see the word godhead. Can the gospel be preached using the term godhead? Sure it can. The 1st century church did it, right? The apostle Paul did it right, and if it were done right, wouldn't many a Trinitarian say, "That's the same thing we teach."?
I often felt as if the way people teach using the word Trinity and all the lingo that goes along with it, that it's like a natural man preaching to a Spirit filled Christian. It just seemed odd to me.

If you did (which is incredibly rare) How did he respond ? I can probably guess. Many pastors tell you that the bible is the standard and not to take their word for it but few actually mean business. Though they have a responsiblility, so do you for your own faith and walk.

100% bull. I actually was part of The Way International Ministry for years. When I felt it was time to leave , I did, there was no brain washing. I graduated from everything the Way had to offer too. They love to bring up the gun thing. But here is where videos like this fill people full of lies. There was a leadership training course for future ministers called the way Corps. The headquarters for this training was a place called Camp Gunnison in Colorado. V. P. Wierwille, Likes to hunt and he liked to take members with him. But you were not allowed to go on a hunting trip unless you took a gun safety course. And the outside world turned it into some kind of militant thing by their own imagination. There are a thousand points like this. In fact just about about every exclamation in videos like this are based on Conjecture and lack of true information. The biggest thing that the world faulted The Way International with was this notion that Jesus was not God. Just because the Catholics believe this in their twisted concept of the trinity. And every other twisted thing that religion has done. But if you are a christian, and if you have been baptized and confessed Romans 10:9 and 10. And if you have paid attention when you study the bile. And if you actually believe what the word of god says, then you;d know that there is only one God. The God and father of the Lord Jesus Christ and that the entire bible tells you that he was the Son of God, conceived by the Holy Ghost, the savior and the messiah, but at know time does the word of god say that he is Gad almighty. What the bible will tell you is that the only way to to God, is through his son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit you receive when you confess and believe in him as your lord and savior. So if you are really a Christian, if you are really reborn of God's Spirit, the same connection that Adam lost when he was beguiled by Lucifer, then I encourage you to follow God, The lord Jesus Christ, and the word of god as God's own will. NOT MEN and what they say. Not even what I say. Check it out for yourself.

But what does that mean according to scripture and the ancient semetic languages? Does scripture support a created or uncreated position for "The Son of God"? If created then he can't be God but if uncreated then the Church is correct to apply to the Son of God a title such as God the Son.

Anonwoohoo does not understand what contemporaneous means. Contemporaneous means living during the same time. Both Tacitus and Josephus are a generation removed from Jesus. No contemporaneous historian mentions Jesus. Tacitus makes a footnote remark about "Christos" but doesn't mention Jesus. Josephus's footnote mention of Jesus is generally considered a partial or complete forgery.
The claim that the bible is best attested historical document is laughable. Just a cursory reading of the gospels exposes tons of errors. I.E. Wrong census, wrong leadership, no rule of going back to one's family ancestral home to be counted. Remember, not one contemporary of Jesus even mentions him. None zip zilch zero.
To be thorough, Pliny the Younger was not a contemporary of Jesus when he made a footnote remark regarding a messiah. Pliny the Elder was a contemporary. Pliny the Elder must have been in a coma when all those miraculous things were supposedly taking place. LOL!

Scripture even at times refers simply to Christ but the full intent is Jesus. Likewise, it is logical for Tacitus to refer to the name in which his readers would be most familiar. Tacitus referring to Christos singles in directly on the founder of the Christians as being the one put to death by Pontius Pilate. (no doubt, Tacitus, reference to the "Christos' as being the one who was put to death by Pontius Pilate unlike you believed that this person was a real historical person). Contemporaneous NO! But, many figures in history are believed to be historical persons due to secondary evidence and this evidence for Jesus does exists. What does exist in this is that Tacitus never doubted the historicity of this person who was put to death by Pontius Pilate..this is evidence. Your position during this time frame surely would have been scoffed at by Tacitus and logically so.
In fact, to be perfectly honest most writings do not last more than 1,000 years thus, your appeal to contemporaneous writings from historians are in fact hard to find not because they didn't exist but due to the inability to preserve their writings and we are fortunate to have almost half of Tactius writings..although we are missing Tacitus writings that would cover Jesus' time frame directly due to the effects of time and are lucky to have this particular passage; however, it is clear enough to logically consider its a direct reference of Jesus by the subject context of Christos as being the founder that had been put to death by Pontius Pilate as the context is about Christian persecution.
It must be noted that since writings "rarely survive past 1,000 years" the only surviving writings perhaps are those that come from scripture and some secular sources as it relates to Jesus of which you call into question as being considered a historical document-namely scripture. The efforts of archeology have proven that scripture is not laughable as a historical document as archeology has converted many scientist towards a belief in Christianity (Caner & Hindson, 2008, Popular Encyclopedia of Apologetics).
We must consider that Pontius Pilate historicity also could be called into question by way of a lack of "written secular evidence" with the exception of writings such as above and scripture itself for nearly 2000 years. The efforts of archeology have now proven Pontius Pilate's existence which in turn adds credibility that the Bible is a historical document (ibid, 2008). This although is just one example of many... so to say that its laughable that scripture is historically accurate comes from a heart and mind that engages in rebellion against God (hence your chosen name) and embraces pseudo-scholarship or limited scholarship when it suits your fancy. I would say in this case scripture and science are laughing directly at you.
I believe that the rest of your efforts in your above information can be summed up in the same manner. It is a double standard for those like you to call into the question the historicity of Jesus while accepting the historicity of Plato, Socrates, Caesar, or any other historical figure. If one denies the historicity of Jesus then one would also have to deny the existence of any historical figure that is accepted as being a real person. This of course flies in the face of logic.
The better question to be asked then is in comparison to all credible historians what is the percentage that believe Jesus actually existed to those who do not? It is your position that falters in comparison why? because, it took 18 centuries to question the historicity of Jesus. That is something to consider as no serious scholar ever questioned it.
I would seriously doubt you would call into question the existence of Plato, Socrates, Caesar, Hannibal (the great general) or any other established character in history because you know it would be illogical to do so but yet you dabble with this "illogical assumption" toward Jesus why? No doubt, because Jesus unlike Socrates or Plato bring into accountability your belief system to a dreadful and holy God.
      1. "There are no contemporary accounts or mentions of Jesus. There should be, so clearly no Jesus existed."
This seems a good argument to many, since modern people tend to leave behind them a lot of evidence they existed (birth certificates, financial documents, school records) and prominent modern people have their lives documented by the media almost daily. So it sounds suspicious to people that there are no contemporary records at all detailing or even mentioning Jesus.
But our sources for anyone in the ancient world are scarce and rarely are they contemporaneous - they are usually written decades or even centuries after the fact. Worse still, the more obscure and humble in origin the person is, the less likely that there will be any documentation about them or even a fleeting reference to them at all.
For example, few people in the ancient world were as prominent, influential, significant and famous as the Carthaginian general Hannibal. He came close to crushing the Roman Republic, was one of the greatest generals of all time and was famed throughout the ancient world for centuries after his death down to today. Yet how many contemporary mentions of Hannibal do we have? Zip, Zero, Zilch. We have none. So if someone as famous and significant as Hannibal has no surviving contemporary references to him in our sources, does it really make sense to base an argument about the existence or non-existence of a Galilean peasant preacher on the lack of contemporary references to him? Clearly it does not. (I did not write the above question and answer ; however, it is a valid point).
If you deny Jesus as a real person then you have to be obtuse enough to deny Hannibal and if you are that obtuse-then you lose all credibility in this forum. If you deny Jesus then you must deny Hannibal as a historical person - as he has no contemporaneous writings. I would like to see if you are ignorant enough to do so- I seriously doubt that you will- as you know all credible historians would accept Hannibal as a genuine person. This is the height of your rebellion that you engage in such idiocy for which one day you will give an account for. The hypocrisy of your double standard is apparent.

@harry4health The Kingdom of God is not a democracy. People in that ministry are "followers" of the Way. The leaders lead by example; the believers follow with imitation (1 Corinthians 11:1). You are to be in one accord and one mind. The Way International is clearly within its rights to state what is expected of its adherents. They also have the right to demand compliance. If you are not willing to toe the line - you are free to go. That's the way it is with all organizations.

Shirley, I am not for sure of your point? Are you your father? Are you saying that if I am alluding to Jesus being God that I mean that Jesus is his own father? If that is your thought let me clarify. John 1;1 says that The Word was made flesh and the Word was with God but at the same time God.Jesus came down from heaven not to do his own will. His origin was heaven but he is shown to be distinct from the one who sent him=the Father-so I mean that Jesus is from heaven and that he was not the Father.

IF and only if you were witness to an event on the Island of Okinawa on a night in 1962 of a fire in Kin Village, then you can speak as an eyewitness, if you were not there that night, you were not and are not qualified to comment on that event.IF someone has not attended teachings and events of TWI, they are not qualified to accurately comment for or against. Proof, not hearsay, printed articles, verbal quotes,TV commentators-proof of all accusations are required.Your opinion or mine is worthless.

@gslblues Not for sure of your position about God and who you believe him to be. Could you please clarify? Are you saying that The Father is God? Are you saying the Son is God? Are you saying The Father cannot be tempted because he is God and the Son can be tempted therefore he is Not God? Clarifying your position would better help me to fully know where you are coming from so I can at least attempt to give you an answer. Thanks if ya would.

Jesus told us to be discerning. There is nothing wrong with doing that. I dont know about whoever made this video because I dont know them but putting out a video with your belief is not manipulation or thought control. And I dont know if they are hypocrites because they dont claim to be sinless as you say.
