Thank you so much my young brother!!! I'm 68 years old and consider myself an expert on music and musicians of that era. However I learn so much from your channel. Please keep them coming, it's priceless!!!
I hear you, I'm 61 myself and I grew up putting the needle on the record for my dad and mom so know quite a bit about music from that era myself,or so I thought. This young brother be digging deep with the research, although I'm familiar with the groups but not so much with some of the people in them. Thanks so much for the education I get from your channel. You can always count on me to give you the thumbs up. 👍
I never knew he was the lead vocalist on my favorite tunes!! He had the most amazing voice!! When I was a little kid I would always sing his songs!! Thanks for this tribute!!!
Yeah, I always assumed that it was Ben E King, as it sounded like him.
@@HardCold-Alquan ...Rudy Lewis didn't sound anything like Ben E. King at all.
@@brucescott4261 That's if you already knew, but if you did not, you didn't know. Whenever I heard of The Drifters leads, it is always mentioned as Clyde McPhatter, Ben E King and the chubby guy after King. Rudy Lewis is never mentioned and this was my first time ever hearing about him.
@@HardCold-Alquan I 👍 agree with you,if you didn't know! How can someone tell you what you think!?
WBPTV. I am learning about a lot of musicians from the past. Keep doing GREAT work.👍
Up on the roof, and on Broadway, I knew those songs. Up on the roof took me back to The Women of Brewster place. May this man be Resting In Peace…Great video!!
His,voice his looks and his, personality all go together as fantastic
Thank you so much for recognizing
The Best Singer of THE DRIFTERS,
Mr. RUDY LEWIS!!!! HE WAS THE BEST...THAT VOICE.. was king!
"UP ON THE ROOF" written by Carole King and her husband Gerry Goffin..
It's My Personal FAVORITE SONG TO TEARS... and the arrangement is just Beautiful 🥰. l ONLY BOUGHT THE CD 💿 BECAUSE OF RUDY!!!!!!!
YOUNG MAN.. YOU DID A GREAT JOB... ALL FACTS!!!!... I WAS ONLY 5 yrs old, When
"UP ON THE ROOF" CAME OUT IN 1962. Rudy's song touched me.. it was so beautifully done. Also, there is a video of the song
"Up on The ROOF," made in 64?
but that is "NOT RUDY LEWIS" in that video... he passed when that video came out, and another drifter is lip syncing Rudy's voice. Plus, Rudy was tall and handsome.. this dude is short and portly!
Thank you... Good Job.. you did your research!!!! ❤️
He had a glorious voice so distinctive and it just floated so soulful. I read the Drifters book printed years ago…and all you mentioned is reference here. However he left this planet with a magnificent singing voice and handsome features. One of the best singers of the Drifters.
Brother you hit the “jackpot” with this one!!! I thought you could never top Shorty Long but you have done it! Thanks so much for shining the spotlight on a brother I grew up listening to (as did most native New Yorkers my age). Keep ‘‘‘em coming!!!
See you there
His grandmother, Ruby Lewis, was an opera singer in Jamaica.
Hey thanks for this. I am his grand nephew -cousin or something. I'm not quite sure lol but I always wanted to know more about him.
Thanks for listing all of his songs. Most Drifters records don't credit the performers, it's helpful to have everything identified.
All you have to do is hear Rudy's delivery on "Some Kind of Wonderful" to realize how exeptional his artistry is. Very rare! RIP brother Rudy.
Brother Adrian turned me on to the Drifters in the late sixties and they became a part of my soul collection. Great job on this presentation...I still hear them saying after the untimely death of Rudy Lewis....Peace
In my humble opinion Rudy Lewis was the best lead The Drifters ever had. Thanks for letting the people know about this great talent!!
I also 👍 agree with you! Absolutely luv his voice!
Amen
Man was Rudy Lewis great.
Disagree. The best lead?? that title goes to Clyde McPhatter
M@@GarwinWayne ...I second emotion!
Never heard of him, but great story nonetheless.
My all time favorite singer. Up on the Roof was my favorite song growing up and probably still is. His Let the Music Play brings tears to my eyes and was the B side to On Broadway. That makes it the greatest 45 ever produced. I’m glad he is not forgotten.
Nice job on this! The Drifters were scheduled to record Under The Boardwalk only to learn Rudy had died the night before. The lead was given to Johnny Moore and their sadness over Rudy's death is evident in the melancholy tone of the record which is otherwise a song about a summertime love affair. So Rudy is still all over the record. God bless The Drifters.
Please keep up the good work, most enjoyed.
Wow...never heard of him. Another in the 27 club. Rest In Peace sir
Good video, sang on some good songs, rip to him.
The Voice WOW thanks for the Memories
Knew nothing about him but what a loss that he died so young. He would have been a big star . Beautiful voice but drugs have taken so many good ones that it’s terrible .
Not underrated in my books..he a well fan favorite of the Drifters fans and well loved by fans even today! Sadly I cannot find any footage of his performances on any media and I'm sure there is footage of him somewhere?
Up, On The Roof And Broadway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard a story years ago that Rudy was supposed to do the lead vocals for The Drifters "Under the Boardwalk" in the studio. He died within days of the session, and Johnny Moore was pegged to do the song. The story goes that Mr. Moore was so shaken that he had tears in his eyes, and was on the verge of crying during the take. Rudy was with him, and told him that he could do it.
That's because they actually wanted Charlie Thomas to do the lead. Rudy & Charlie was tight. In one take Charlie did do the vocals but was so distraught he had to leave the studio & the group to a break
Can you do one on the lead of the blue notes my hero?
Are you talking about Harold Melvin?
@@randelldavis578 no franklin p. That's all I k o he was lead ob hero.
BOY, He could sing.. Remember him.
Great singer
I love his version of let the music play
I love The Drifters but Rudy Lewis was/is my favorite Drifter.
