A lot of people are contemplating here about how smart Wheatley was with his plan to kill Chell.
If anything, considering that his purpose is to generate terrible ideas, then the reason he came so close to actually succeeding in the plan, alongside the genious idea to lay a trap on the stalemate button, is because wasting time trying to kill Chell while the whole facility is about to explode instead of figuring out how to fix the place is the worst possible idea he could've generated
I always thought of this myself. It explains why Chell, who was at Wheatley's mercy so many times when he was in power, ended up surviving and moving on regardless of her situation. Because Wheatley literally makes the worst decisions as per his programming. For instance, he could've just dropped her into the bottomless fall below in The Part Where He Kills You, or just mashed her instantly when she landed on the platform.
The thing is, GLaDOS is just calling him a "moron" because it pisses him off. Wheatley isn't a moron - he's designed to come up with terrible ideas. He can be as ingenious and crafty as that requires... so long as the outcome is a terrible thing.
He spent more time, dedication and work into doing that one unnecessary thing instead of focusing on saving the entire facility. Aperture was banging rocks together and made a robot with ADHD
That's right! Wheatley comes up with bad ideas, but not bad implementation of them, he has good intelligence and can work productive, he just needs to be directed right

My personal theory for Wheatley has always been that he is a fully working fact sphere, with an inverse operator attached to the end of his thoughts. Sounds exactly like something aperture would do, create a machine that can come up with the perfect plans, then force it to do *anything but* that plan
Can we just appreciate that when PotaDOS tries to fry Wheatley’s circuits with a paradox, not only does Wheatley not even recognize it as such, but the walking cubes in the room *do* self-destruct.
Wheatley’s barely sentient abominations of science are still more capable of critical thinking than he is.

The part that I love about this is the timing. You hear an orchestral song, heralding a giant and difficult boss. Only to hear the line:

I like how he makes an effort to avoid all of GlaDOS's mistakes killing you, but ends up remaking her BIGGEST mistake (shooting explosives at Chell), only this time as a purely conscious decision rather than being unable to shut them off. If he'd just let the neurotoxin run its course he would have "won".
Well he DID complain that his "bloody bombs are stuck on".
Shame too because he did make a smart decision to boobytrap the stalemate button I like to think in the final battle wheatley decided to make the most unworkable plan so that his program would make him do the opposite and make a somewhat component decision like watching the tapes of GLaDOS's death getting shields and boobytrap the stalemate button as he wasnt designed to be an idiot but was programmed look for his optimal outcome and to just make wrong choices so by making a stupid plan he would do the opposite and make compotent decisions
He couldn't turn off the bombs after the first corrupted core, which is why he left them on.
Even then, if he did manage to kill Chell, the facility would’ve blown up killing him in the process, so Chell shooting a portal onto the moon and getting him sucked out and stranded in space technically saved him
I just realized.. This song is JUST long enough to fit the amount of time you're given to beat Wheatley... If you hear the full song in-game, you're fucked.
That's also why it cuts off so suddenly. The other songs are meant to loop, but this song doesn't get the chance to loop.

Edit: actually glados was intentionally built to be nice but with fail after fail all the employees died with her still being in control. she is almost always stuck in this "mind prison" and the only way to free her is to remind her of caroline. just a theory tho
I just noticed how this song is like a battle between the mind of Wheatley and the Central core. The soft parts are Wheatley trying to be himself and the scratchy, harsh metal parts are the Central core corrupting him. It just makes this song all the more tragic.

Yeah! Like how the part that samples I AM NOT A MORON sounds more melancholic and minor key, like he's trying to stop himself and is regretting so many things, but it still has that scratchy sound to it cause he can't really fight it, and how the rougher parts have the bassy four note leitmotif from You Know Her?
If you look into Wheatley's voice lines he sounds emotional and like he's holding back tears as he gets more desperate.

Not many people acknowledge this, when you attach the space core to Wheatley during the final boss it says that system corruption is at 50%, while all the other cores only count to 25% of the corruption. Now this could mean one of two things.
1.) Space core is significantly more corrupt than the other cores.
2.) Wheatley has been corrupted by the mainframe and counts to 25% of the corruption.

You're forgetting the fact that he is literally the intelligence dampening sphere. It's the whole point that he's already corrupted. He is literally a core built to dampen GLaDOS' intelligence, as she literally tells us

To be honest, from 2:33 to 3:14 I imagine that inside Wheatley he's trying to regain control but the Central A.I. is blocking his path and repeatedly saying "She didn't catch you. She didn't even try."
For me, it would have been "She wore you as a hat. A HAT!" I was standing perfectly under where he'd detach from and he just stayed there until I moved. XD
I think it shows how corrupted he's becoming due to the cores. If you wait long enough during the final fight, he becomes really paranoid and starts accusing you of working with GLaDOS the entire time. "You're in this together, aren't you? You've been playing me the whole time! Both of you! First you make me think you're brain damaged! Then you convince me you're sworn enemies with your best friend over here! Then, then, when I reluctantly assume the responsibility of running the place, you conveniently decide to run off together. Just when I need you the most." He even goes as far to start accusing everything of being fake. "I'll bet there isn't even a problem with the facility, is there? I'll bet there's no such thing as a 'reactor core'. I'll bet that's not even fire coming out of the walls, is it? It's just cleverly placed lights and papier mache, I'll bet that's all it is."
It really shows how corrupt the cores are making him, but it's the only way to stop him.

No matter how many times I decide to replay this fight, it always hurts to hear this coupled with Wheatley's dialogue. If you wait long enough/fail enough, you'll be able to get some really gut-punching lines, and Stephen genuinely sounds like he's going to cry saying some of them. Gets you right in the feels and makes you feel like a monster for ever fighting back.
I really like the line when he calls back to the begining of the game when you fail to catch him.

Even if he killed chell, the facility would blow up and kill him. His four step plan failed before he even created it. Really sucks for him. It’s clear in the song motifs and game that he was corrupted my the GlaDOS mainframe, he never intended to betray you.

-at 0:16-1:39 is when the bass notes from the second part of _You Know Her?_ play in the background as the melody continues
-0:30-1:12 the melody being i believe glados's motif! if you want to know what that sounds like, hit up _Music of the Spheres_
-1:39-2:20 smidge of an interlude, no discerning leitmotif i can hear off the top of my head
-2:20-2:33 what sounds like wheatley science again
-2:33-3:00 otherwise known as my _FAVORITE_ PART, bc THIS is where you can hear the fight between glados' and wheatley's leitmotifs, all over the the frazzled, harried glitches of the mainframe! (the first couple notes of 🌾ley's theme tries to butt in at 2:36 and 2:39-2:40 and finally breaks through at 2:42. this repeats and it breaks through again at 2:56) but eventually, though:
-3:00-3:14 glados' leitmotif loses, and wheatley's continues (you can hear his best here). throughout the whole fight (2:33-3:14) the slowed bass of the second part of _You Know Her?_ returns in the background
-3:15-3:28 another interlude there
-3:28-3:41 sounds like courtesy call! (you can actually hear the little arpeggios that play when you do long/impressive jumps in the game at 3:36 and 4:10!)
-3:42 a veerryyy slow _You know her?_ makes its return in the background, as 🌾ley's theme plays! i was stuck on it for a while there because the D, Db, A, Bflat had the A replaced with a Cflat 😅. (also, i think the best changes from 4/4 to 3/4, starting from here and ending at 4:23!) it keeps going as 🌾ley's theme drops out, but at 4:23 it speeds up to the same tempo it had at the beginning. (0:16)
-3:52-4:12 wheatley's motif kicks back up again, completely monopolizing the melody.
-4:37 glados motif comes back, and soon after it does:
-4:51-5:18 wheatley's motif joins in, and they start fighting again, with 🌾ley's motif doing that butting-in thing and breaking through. all the while, the mainframe's glitch plays, and the slow bass from _You Know Her?_ is still playing. it's essentially a repeat of 2:33-3:00
-5:18 _You Know Her?_ speeds up to the tempo it had at the beginning and continues to the end. it never really stopped since 3:42, just kept slowing down/speeding up
SO in total, we've got five leitmotifs (6 if you count the mainframe glitches):

I love how it's a battle of glados and wheatley
Remember, he was an Intelligence Dampening Sphere. He wouldn't have been told about the Gels, and IIRC he never saw the Conversion Gel get used, thus meaning he never knew what it could do. If he had known, he would likely have gotten rid of the Gel early, and made it actually impossible to beat him. He was smart, just not fully informed.

In the beginning of "the part where he kills you" you use the white gel right Infront of him,
no, he literally says during the fight:"This conversion gel must be decades old you are probaly ridden with dieseases" how does he know that the gel is decades old rather than an invention GLaDOS made just before the switch.

The gels only connected to Aperture once Chell reopened one of the transition hatches, meaning Wheatley could logically assume the gels were an antique, obsolete testing element.

So basically this final boss fight theme features Wheatley and GLaDOS struggling over the control of the facility while the destruction rages on and the menace of the mainframe (which drives any AI plugged into it into insanity and is arguably the real villain of Portal 2 ) blazing over them.
Oh! Thanks, I was hoping to find something like this! If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to add something on too. Certain clips of the glitch noises during the song, at least to me, sounds reminiscent of The Friendly Faith Plate. I may be wrong, but that's just my observation! Thanks for sharing your sharp hearing!
Reesa Oh, you're welcome! I am not a sharp hearer, just obsessed with identifying leitmotifs (which are often so purposefully and meticulously placed) in movies and video games. As for the glitch noises, I can't be sure, since The Friendly Faith Plate is a soundtrack totally composed of glitch noises, making it almost indistinguishable from hundreds of other random noises that ring throughout the facility.

Mike Morasky sure did an amazing job with the soundtrack. You indeed identified all leitmotifs, and you're right they're not placed in that order for nothing. The I'm Not A Moron track is also worth studying, it's also a "Weathly stuggling between good and evil" music ^^

Well, metal ball changed his actions because he started to get corrupt by the Central A.I, Central A.I Keeps the core from losing interest in Science, that's why metal ball also feels satisfaction when lunatic completes a test, and also why he gets shocked when giving the solution.

Central A.I. gives the satisfaction, and he's not designed for testing. That's why there is a main core.

I think you nailed it. I got the same idea listening to this track a couple hundred times over (it's too good!).
While in control, he seemed grow further from the real Wheatley we met, and slowly became more like GLaDOS - corrupted. In the post-credits scene, having been detached from the system and losing all that power, he is thinking normally again and regrets what happened.
This track is the corrupted Wheatley theme. Mostly why I love it.

This quote is the reason why I think Wheatley planned this whole thing in advance. He acts all innocent, but he definitely knew that there would be nothing for him on the outside, so he kept getting test subjects to try and put him in charge. The betrayal could have happened then and here, or it could have happened at any time, even from the very beginning.

Proof of wheatley not having other humans: The wall wheatley broke in chapter 1 was still intact, he wouldve gotten fired for breaking walls multiple times so it leads me to believe he was just bluffing.

has got to be one of the best assortments of music i've heard in my entire life, nothing can beat this.
i also love how 3:01 sound like it's getting progressively lower, just like our hope for wheatley, and it also perfectly describes how wheatley feels, insecure, and he doesn't trust us, he thinks we didn't care for him. and this, including the entire part, perfectly describes how lost he is in his own insecurities.
hearing this part with him saying stuff like "you never tried to catch me" and "you never cared" whilst he sounds like he is on the verge of crying really makes this settle in.
it's kinda hard to say, but VALVe kinda outplayed toby fox with this. if only they used more leitmotifs tho.

***** I tried holding my breath the second time I played through the game, and at the end when I held my breath, I almost passed out. But, in Chell's situation, it's life or death. If you're running around more, you're taking in more oxygen. If I was sitting still and held my breath, It would be about 0.7 times less then if I held my breath while jogging. Back to Chell, if she let go, she would be dead, and she knows that. Adrenaline is pumping super fast, so she probably could hold her breath that long. If portals don't work with gases. If they did, most of the oxygen would be sucked into space, and Earth would have less oxygen. Then Earth would be more toxic. What about the amputation of your limbs because of the fact of it's freezing up there? AND for the fact that she's almost traveling at physical Black Hole speeds? That remains a mystery, (Calls game theory)
