- This volume of Maestro's Choice presents Vilayat Khan's sitar rendition of various ragas of his choice. It begins with raga Sanjh Saravali, which has been created by blending three evening ragas: Khem, Bihag and Kalyan. It is followed by raga Mand Bhairav, which is again a mix of two ragas: Mand and Bhairav. The next is a rendition of raga Pilu, a romantic raga, followed by raga Rageshree, a late evening raga, Gavati and finally raga Sughrai originating from the parent scale Kafi.

If there is or ever was a human being who could make an instrument not only sing but come alive with all complexities, nuances, pathos, real or imagined,of life and even the vast unknown beyond our puny horizon.The lows that almost but never drown in silence ,the unimaginable turns of notes he plucks out of and gives eternal life to in the very nano moments of their being scattered in to the dark matter of Universe . And with mere thread like strings of his sitar he makes one's soul stir even from under countless layers of this and that stuff that the world bury's it under.
He makes the world go still for me and God come alive.

I can't have enough of this man! He has become immortal for me. Whichever the Raag, he puts the human soul in it. What kind of man could he have been? He could only have been kaleidoscopic. He could have been this to that man, and he could have been that to this man. Could he have understood Shujat, his own son? Not possible. Shujat separated from him at age maybe ten. Although formative years indicate later shapes the individual will don, unexpected things can happen. These things can belie all the predictions of the wise men! A man is continually shaped by all sorts of mysterious coincidences and happenings. Nobody knew this better than Thomas Hardy. He portrayed an element of chance like no other author. (JNP)##$#$
A good book, a flash of insight, of crystal clear intuition, can change the course of your life. Shujat is a great sitarist in his own right. He bows down on one of his knees, takes an imaginary hand of the Sitar, and kisses it gently, romantically. He wooes it. And Vilayat treats the Sitar as his Mistress. Poles apart, isn't this? And yet they indulge in Jugalbandis! Isn't this an anachronism? A mistake of time? Shujat should write an autobiography. He would be doing a disservice to humanity if he doesn't.
Comparison is always odious in any field - but much more so in art and literature!(JNP)###
Vilayat as a phenomenon needs to be psychoanalysed threadbare. A new book by Namita Devidayal on Vilayat Khan unravels the man - but to an extent. The real Vilayat will only stand up when those in proximity pen-portrait him truthfully.(JNP###)
