I actually feel like I've lost a friend even though they're fictional. And only Janet will be left behind with her memories of them. Plus Michael won't have most of his friends when his human body eventually dies.

As if there's some perfect combination of words I could say to make people understand and love me, or some perfect choice I could make for my career, or a perfect thing I could do to save my sister who struggles with depression. I think Mike Schur really good with finales. While I had a few qualms the final season of Parks and Rec, I think that finale did a really great job of giving longterm resolution for the cast and exploring a lot of the questions people might have about what the characters will do in the future while still leaving some things open for interpretation.
I think Schur (and all the other Good Place writers) took things a step further with The Good Place, and not only explored what each character would continue to do after the events of the main story, but it also asked a lot of questions about the value of life (something it had done throughout its entire run), and the fact that it provided so much great character resolution WHILE STILL exploring philosophical questions about life is pretty dang impressive.
    Great show, great video.

The goodbye scene between Eleanor and Chidi really struck a cord with me and brought a tear to my eyes. A few years ago, I spent the day with my stepdad and mom. My stepdad, Walt, needed help picking out a birthday gift for my mom and wanted to make a day of it. We had a great time, laughing and reminiscing. As the day went on, I thanked him for always being there for me and he told me how I was the son he would have chosen to have. We then said our goodbyes. The next day, I get a phone call from my mom telling me that Walt was dead. As upset and sad as that made me, I was so glad I had told him how much he's meant to me, and vice versa. The pain of the loss is still there, but knowing that he loved me like a son and that he knew I felt the same, has brought me a peace that I wouldn't have otherwise found. Don't wait to tell people you love how you feel, you may not have the chance that I had to let them know while they're still here.

I loved that the main 4 didn't all have the same ending. Though it would have been just fine for them all to walk through the door, I liked that Tahani stayed on to become an architect. Also worth mentioning: the open-ended resolution for Mindy St. Clair and seeing Doug enjoying the buffet.

My favorite moment I think was when Eleanor walked through the arch and just became dust that fell back on Earth. I am terrified of death and the idea of just not existing is very confusing and scary for me, but the way they showed it in the show was, in a way, kind of reassuring to me. To me, this truly was a perfect ending.

I love when shows do a call back to a much earlier season. The good place did that perfectly with Michael saying “take it sleazy” to the postman. It makes the viewer remember where it all began and using it as the end quote is powerful. The journey is over but it’s memories still stand.

Gosh, I cannot believe how amazing that ending was. It was so satisfying it was unsatisfying. What I mean by that is that it had such a great resolution and end to the characters that I can’t stop thinking about it. Mostly I am struggling with the concept of ceasing to exist. Just ‘going away’ is a thought that is so open ended and the fact that The Good Place has instilled that into my brain makes me think way too much. I hate when an ending to a show is so perfect. It makes me stay up at night.

Fave scene: After they've solved the problem of eternal afterlife they show Michael's office. Notice that Doug Forcett's picture is replaced with pics of Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason.
Fave Scene 2: Doug Forcett pigging out at the rager once he arrives in heaven. He freaking EARNED IT.

Characters are saying goodbye to each other, we are saying goodbye to the character, but also actors are saying goodbay to each other. At least I personally felt that (maybe myself being an actor makes me see that idk). The way they played their character felt extremely real, because that's also what they are going though as individuals in their real life. Obviously they won't ceese to exist but their group adventure in the good time is over too.

The finale of the Good Place reminds me so much of Lord of the Rings after the destruction of the Ring. The book still has the Scouring of the Shire, but both the films and the books shift the conflict to an internal one in Frodo. The Ring is gone, but his trauma lingers on. His decision to sail west to the Undying Lands is what I was reminded of the most by the door to rejoin the universe in the Good Place. Frodo's emotional journey comes to a close when he is able to let go of his trauma and failure, and sail into the sunset, and beyond a far green country under a swift sunrise.

While the ending was thematically and tonally very appropriate and probably the only sort of ending they could do that would work, it broke me. I was VERY nervous to finish TGP bc I was feeling very fragile, but despite making me cry a lot TGP’s finale was just so healing and made me feel so much hope. I very badly needed it in that moment. They didn't want to go down in history as "it started as good, then got lame" type of show so they actually planned the finale in small bits and pieces at a time starting at episode 1 of season 4. I think it's fair to point out that mostly only American tv shows operate within the never-knowing-when-theyll-get-cancelled/ perpetually-trying-to-get-more-seasons-out model. European tv shows for example have planned endings and usually secure funding before they start filming. So we most often end up with well planned shows, like the Good Place

Favorite moment of this episode in particular: Jason popping out from behind the tree after Chidi leaves. It's the show's final big surprise and it truly blew me away. And I think it's another example of how special this show is just in its premise alone. I mean, imagine the same exact scenario happening in ANY other show. I beloved main character has an emotional send off and they ostensibly die. Then they appear again as a quick gag. And then they immediately die again? That's just going to piss people off. I just don't see it working. But here, it does!
Top three moments of the whole series:
    3. There's a blink-and-you-miss-it moment that I did completely miss until my tenth or so rewatch of the whole series and it is a truly perfect character moment for Jason. In the scene after he asks Michael if he can keep the cactus that pricked him, Jason can be seen watering it from the little decorative fountain Michael has in the waiting room outside his office. On one hand, it's such a sweet gesture for him to want to take care of this plant even though it hurt him... on the other hand, he is unwittingly, absolutely, for sure drowning the thing.
    2. "Oh, oh. Ok. I get it, I get it. You want me to admit that I was wrong. You want me to say "Ooooh Chidi. I'm SOO sooooorry because I didn't understand human ethics and you do. It made me feel insecure and I lashed out and 'Oh pleeease help me because I feel so so lost and vulnerable. Pfft."
    "... Yes."
    Literal 5 seconds of silence
"Oh Chidi, I'm so sorry. I, um... I didn't understand human ethics. And, and you do. And it made me feel insecure and I lashed out. And I really need your help because I feel... so lost and vulnerable."
Again, this kind of scene should NOT work. But Ted Danson forking NAILS it. On first viewing, there's still enough nuance that you aren't certain whether or not he's getting one over on Chidi again, but it's also sincere enough to make you wonder... and then on second viewing when you KNOW he's being sincere, it's absolutely heart-wrenching.
Number 1: The train pulls away from the station. Michael looks down and sees the humans with Janet still in cuffs. He seethes with raw emotion, but is he furious that the humans tricked him PLUS triumphant that he caught them again, OR is he bursting from dread, guilt, and then relief when he sees that they understood his message? Exact same music and slow zoom as the reveal of the twist at the end of season 1: "YOU GUYS! I WAS SO SCARED FOR YOU!" Uh! Perfection. Michael was my favorite character throughout season 1 and I was COMPLETELY taken by surprise by the twist, and to be honest, I felt betrayed too! I really didn't like the beginning of season 2 the first time through because I hated seeing cruel, evil Michael, and I had no idea there would be a redemption arc, let alone such a quick one (and yet utterly believable) and such a satisfying one. Now, the first few episodes of season two rank among my faves because it has some of the best gags, and story, and it's so fast-paced. And this is the culmination of that. Love it!
